  1. The all-new MINI Countryman debut is just around the corner and MINI is already testing its fire-breathing JCW variant. While this video bills this new MINI has just a Countryman, it’s actually a full-on 2025 JCW Countryman complete with MINI’s first ever quad exhaust pipes. But what makes this MINI a true JCW? We’ve got exclusive details on everything from power to release date. 2025 JCW Countryman – What’s Under the Hood? There are two competing rumors from our sources on the all important engine question. One source tells us to expect the new JCW Countryman to make use of the current B48 power plant with no changes. That means we’d see a 306 hp with 331 lb-ft of torque mated to a 8 speed Aisin automatic. While that might sound disappointing at first, having owned a 2021 JCW Countryman is that same combo, there’s not a lot to complain about with that combination. The second (and the one we’d bet on) is that this new JCW Countryman will leverage the revised B48 from the just announced BMW X1 M35i. That would mean we’d see an increase to 312 hp and a downgrade to 295 lb-ft (a 36 lb-ft of torque decease) why more power but less torque? Our assumption is that it’s all about the transmission. MINI and BMW are keen to reduce the number of components used across the range and are standardizing the 7 speed dual clutch across all small ICE powered front wheel drive cars. That DCT could very likely have a torque limit of around 300 lb-ft of torque. That change aside this revised B48 has incorporated several innovative new features. Notable advancements include the adoption of the Miller combustion cycle, redesigned intake ports and combustion chambers, and various changes to the camshaft timing, injection, ignition system, and exhaust gas routing. If MINI uses this revised B48, we’ll see stronger crankshafts and an optimized oil supply system for the pistons with cooling channels. It also benefits from main bearing shells and caps carried over from the latest-generation 6-cylinder engines. Then there’s the Sport Boost which helps to maximize performance. The Sport Boost function gives a temporary boost in power by pulling and holding the left-hand shift paddle for at least one second. When drivers activate this feature, all powertrain and chassis systems to their sportiest settings. Quad pipes – a first for any factory MINIThose Quad Exhaust Tailpipes They’re real and they are straight from BMW M. Well let’s be clear. They are derived from an M Performance product – the X1 M35i. While engineered by M, the X1 M35i is not a full M car but one that takes elements of what M does and applies it to a car that is more accessible and forgiving than an M car. What do four pipes mean for performance? Likely not a lot. But they are nice eye candy and they clearly mark the M35i and the JCW Countryman out as distinctly different from their pedestrian versions. New All Wheel Drive Mechanical Limited-Slip Differential At The Front Axle Sources have confirmed that the all new 2025 JCW Countryman will feature the same revised xDrive system seen on the recently released BMW X1 M35i. That means we’ll see a mechanical limited-slip differential built into the 7-speed DCT. This serves to limit the difference in rotational speed between the front wheels, boosting agility and handling dynamics when taking corners at speed and increasing traction over loose terrain or in adverse weather conditions. Note those air-inlets on the corners. Those mark this text mule out as a JCW.Larger Brakes with Options BMW M Compound Pads Sources are telling us that the new 2025 JCW Countryman will also get The new BMW X1 M35i’s uprated braking system comprised of four-piston, fixed-caliper brakes with 15.2-inch drilled discs at the front wheels and single-piston, floating-caliper units with integrated parking brake and 13.0-inch discs at the rear. The inner-vented brake discs are composed of a grey cast iron ring and an aluminum chamber. In addition to this, weight has been minimized and unsprung masses are substantially lower compared with conventional braking systems. The X1 M35i offers the optional M Compound brakes which offer better bite and reportedly more feel. We have zero information on this option but it would make sense for MINI to offer something similar as an optional extra. The BMW X1 M35i’s Sport seats.M Sport Seats Look A Lot Like JCW Seats To US The optional M Sport seats offer a wide range of electrical adjustment and feature an illuminated M logo in the upper section of the backrests. But more importantly they look like the second generation of the JCW seats that we saw on the previous (F60) JCW Countryman. Clad in MINI appropriate alcantara and cloth, these would make an excellent JCW seat. Near-Actuator Wheel Slip Limitation For Sharper Agility. Given all the tech coming from the X1 M35i, we also expect to get the near-actuator wheel slip limitation technology. In this system, the traction control function is integrated into the engine management. This eliminates the long signal paths to the DSC control unit, meaning that the corrective inputs are applied up to ten times faster than in conventional systems and with exceptional precision. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation thereby ensures optimum traction (even on slippery roads), unwavering straight-line composure under hard acceleration, and excellent directional stability in corners. This spy shot taken from a recent photo shoot is the all electric Countryman SE. But it’s not hard to imagine what a JCW might look like. Will There be an All-Electric Countryman JCW? MINI isn’t ready to talk about what might come down the road – and yes we have asked. But it doesn’t take much to realize that it would fit perfectly in the the brand’s ambitious electric reinvention. But if so when? We’d bet it would be something MINI would add later in the lifecycle as it concentrates on its core models. But this is just us guesstimating at this point. 2025 JCW Countryman Release Dates And Pricing While we don’t have confirmed release dates yet, sources tell us that the ICE U25 Countryman and Countryman S will begin production in November 2023. U25 / Leipzig, GermanyStart of ProductionU25 ICE Countryman11/2023U25 ICE Countryman S11/2023U25 ICE Countryman JCW03/2023*U25 BEV Countryman E03/2024U25 BEV Countryman SE03/2024U25 BEV Countryman JCWTBD**UnconfirmedThat would likely mean we’ll see the JCW Countryman begin production in March of 2024 as that’s the next major production change-over in BMW’s typical schedule. Given that the all new U25 Countryman will debut in early September, we’d expect the 2025 JCW Countryman to be shown off a few months after that. Does this new JCW Countryman sound interesting enough to ? Let us know in the comments. The post 2025 JCW Countryman Caught Testing As It Nears Debut appeared first on MotoringFile. 2. We love the smell and touch of high quality leather. But there’s a big environmental impact due to the production of leather in the quantities that companies like MINI need. So much so that MINI has made the bold decision to eliminate leather from its coming starting with the all new J01 MINI Cooper electric. But can the vegan only interior compete against leather? We went hands-on with the new MIIN to find out. What’s wrong with leather? It’s complicated. While the leather industry is vocal about its use as a smart byproduct of livestock farming, there’s some serious concerns around its production and amount of impact it has on the environment. Converting animal skin to leather demands vast energy and involves hazardous chemicals like mineral salts, formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, oils, dyes, some cyanide-based finishes. Suffice to say it’s not the most natural and environmentally safe process. It’s also not inline with MINI’s brand image of being environmentally conscious and animal friendly. But how do you replace something as iconic as leather seats? Hands-on with MINI’s Vegan Friendly Interior Ok so leather isn’t the best for the environment. But can there be a legitimate alternative that feels as good as MINI’s Lounge Leather or BMW’s Merino Leather? We spent time in the new 2024 J01 MINI Cooper Electric and talked to the people behind the new generation of MINI products to get some answers. One thing that’s clear – BMW and MINI are confident in products like Vescin. So much so that a similar product (known in BMW terms as Sensafin – an improved version of Sensatec) is being used in several cars with MSRPs well over $100,000. What’s it like in person? Getting into the new J01 MINI Cooper electric it’s clear that Vescin is a step-up from what we’ve known as Leatherette. The off-white perforated seats in the MINI Cooper electric we experienced were softer to the touch than leatherette and felt much more supple. But how do they compare with leather? In short very well. Compared with the standard Chesterfield or Cross Punch leather seating, Vescin feels softer and more premium. It’s not on par with the feel and softness of MINI’s Lounge Leather but then again that’s $2500 option on the Signature Trim. What was on par with Lounge Leather and even the high-end Merino Leather on BMWs was the Vescin material on the new MINI’s steering wheel. In fact as I put my hands on the wheel for the first time I turned to one of the program managers of the new J01 and told him this clearly must be leather. He smiled and told me it was in fact a higher-end version of the same Vescin on the seats. Having experienced leatherette in various forms for decades in BMWs and MINIs, I simply couldn’t believe how it felt essentially identical to MINI’s higher-end Lounge Leather. While I only sampled a couple of different seats made of the new vegan friendly Vescin, it was clear that MINI was right to be confident about its ability to replace leather in terms of look and feel. Does it have the same smell? Naturally no. But then again the low-end leather on most cars (I’d put Cross Punch and Chesterfield in that category) doesn’t have much of a scent either. And when it does it’s often due to chemicals designed to replicate the scent of full grain leather. Our Early Verdict The concept of taking leather out of cars has become emotional for some. But the reality is real, full grain leather doesn’t exist in cars unless you’re well into the six figure price range. What we’ve had with MINI’s mid-tier leather is essentially a veneer applied to leatherette on about 80% of seats (the rest is leatherette). And in our experience it can scratch, stain and eventually crack with use. While Lounge Leather is much higher quality, even that will suffer with age unless you like the patina of cracking bolsters. Vescin solves all of those problems with an easy to clean, long lasting product that happens to be much more environmentally friendly to make and is 100 recyclable to boot. Crucially it looks and feels better than the mid-tier leather we’ve come to know in MINIs. And there’s hope for a higher quality version as well given the Vescin on the steering wheel we felt was on par with the best Lounge Leather we’ve even experienced in MINIs. Add in the ability to stay cooler in extreme heat and it feels like a real step forward. Yet final verdict will have to come after a few years of living with the new material. While Leatherette has proven to be incredible durable (more so than leather in our experience) we’ll withhold judgement on that front until we have real data. Until then Vescin looks and feels very promising in our initial experience. As much as we love the feel of that $2,500 Lounge Leather in MINIs, we’re ready to move on to something all around better. 3. After weeks of new MINI news we wanted to dig into the MotoringFile archives for a blast from the past. Behold the MINI Maverick trading cards from the MINI Maverick campaign. Mavericks was part of the early, award winning work done by Crispin, Porter + Bogusky for MINIUSA’s launch of the R50 and R53 MINIs. This particular part of the campaign featured Ed Roth inspired illustrations designed to not just make MINI cool but give it an edge that most brands would shy away from. The work done during this time by CP+B for MINI was not just award winning but creative in that there was no TV. This was marketing that was meant to feel as different as the MINI did at the time. Of course this is just a part of that amazing time period of MINI marketing. In total the work one multiple awards and moved the needle of a relatively unknown brand in the US. And it did so with a fraction of the spend that most automakers shelled out. MINI spent roughly $567,000 for each percentage point of awareness. The other 12 brands in MINI’s competitive set spent an average of $5,973,000 (or more than 10 times as much) to do the same. In CP+B’s own words the broader campaign was designed to: Showcase the defining look of the new MINI – its size and contrasting roof. Create as many opportunities as possible for people to come in contact with the new MINI so they could experience its smile generating magic. Subtly anthropomorphize the new MINI. Communicate our unique benefit – life-affirming exhilaration at an attainable price. Emphasize customization and individual self-expression. Use non-traditional media and traditional media in very non-traditional ways. The overall work went onto to win Creativity’s Campaign of the year beating out well known work like Apple’s famous Switch campaign. However it was always the trading cards that so many fans loved. Amazing what you can find in the MotoringFile garage. The post A Look Back at MINI Mavericks – An Early Ad Campaign From MINI USA appeared first on MotoringFile. View the full article
  4. Wireless CarPlay has been a massive add to the current generation’s digital experience for several reasons. For one the current experience is lacking and CarPlay immediately solves that. Second is the excellent integration the our digital lives. With the new OS9, MINI aims to Crete an experience that makes CarPlay and Android Auto feel less required. But that doesn’t mean their going away. With the all new OS9 powering the digital experience, MINI will not only continue to offer wireless CarPlay but will also add wireless Android Auto as well. In fact MINI is aiming to make both standard across not just the J01 MINI Cooper but the entire range of models. Given the new circular OLED screen there’s been a lot of speculation on how this would work. Having gone hands-on with the new OS9 we have some answers. Both will work inside of the circular screen as a 4×3 rectangle allowing for the critical drive and climate functionally to be present and functional. That means we’ll see a slightly different layout from CarPlay putting the “dock” at the bottom. Will you still use CarPlay or Android Auto if MINI’s new OS9 is as good as it seems? Let us know in the comments. The post The New MINI Digital Experience & What It Means for CarPlay and Android Auto appeared first on MotoringFile. View the full article
  5. Yesterday we showed you the future of the MINI digital experience with the new circular OLED screen and MINI OS9. In that massive report we give you a glimpse of the new MINI Experience Modes. But there’s more to show so we wanted to go in-depth on the concept and what each of the modes will deliver. MINI Experience Modes – A New World of Personalization The latest MINI models introduce “MINI Experience Modes,” which are designed to amplify the connection between drivers and their cars. Standard specification includes the Core, Green and Go-Kart Modes, each of which has its own specific user interface design. However there are a handful to optional and model dependent modes. With Experience Modes MINI aims to immerse drivers in a personalized driving experience. By combining light and sound, they aim to elevate the overall driving encounter. At the center of this experience lies the circular OLED screen, the MINI Interaction Unit, which adapts its design and content based on the selected mode. Core Mode Core is the standard mode and the one you’ll in most photos when the J01 MINI Cooper Electric launches. In other words its the standard mode that most people will probably use. When Core Mode is selected is the main menu with the MINI widgets remains in the foreground. The interface on the circular display switches to Laguna – an almost teal blue. Additionally both the optional projection and ambient lighting adjust automatically to match this color. The “Core” driving sound is introduced as the new electric MINI brand sound, which can be heard both inside the car and from outside (functioning as acoustic pedestrian protection). MINI describes the sound as inviting, energizing, and stimulating. Since we haven’t driven the car yet, will withhold judgement. Go-Kart Mode Our favorite both thematically and visually has to be Gp-Kart mode. Inspired by MINI’s motorsport DNA, Go-Kart Mode changes the display interface and the interior to a darker look using anthracite and red. The circular display adopts a classic speedometer that can transform from digital to analogue across the full surface of the screen. The projection and ambient lighting are adjusted automatically to the Go-Kart colors. Crucially for most of us, Go-Kart also remaps throttle response allowing for the feeling of more immediate torque. The Go-Kart driving sound is marked out by strongly pronounced pitch and fall which should go along with the remapped throttle well. We’ve also heard rumors of things like drift mode and remapped steering but we’ll have to wait for the official debut for more information. Green Mode Not surprisingly MINI has a Green most and it’s focused on efficiency. As you guessed the screen and ambient lighting is green. But more interestingly MINI has gamified the experience using an animal (to us it looks like a stylized cheetah) to indicate through both their coloring and their character which efficiency level (high, medium, low) the driver is currently achieving. As you’d expect the throttle response of the accelerator pedal is optimized for efficient driving. There’s likely other energy saving measures at play but MINI isn’t going into details yet. Balance Mode Balance mode exudes tranquility and unpretentiousness. The driving sound of Balance draws inspiration from the serene symphony of a forest, from the gentle babbling of streams and the melodious chirping of crickets to the rustling whispers of the wind through the tree. On paper it sounds like an artfully crafted auditory landscape and all very relaxing. Timeless Mode The one many of you will love, Timeless brings the classic Mini aesthetic back with a refined serif typeface and a prominent speedometer, elegantly juxtaposed against a cream backdrop. Timeless Mode is particularly beautiful at night when the display and projections shift darker. In the MINI “Timeless” driving sound, MINI merged the past and present. The Sound Design team worked to capture the sound from an original 1959 Mini as well as the original 2006 JCW GP. The result is a seamless blend with a futuristic interpretation of the MINI “Core” driving sound. Vivid Mode This mode revolves around the presentation of media content. The user interface design has a vivid spectrum of colors, while the projections and ambient lighting inside the car are derived from the cover artwork of the currently playing music, leveraging automatic color selection technology. Personal Mode With Personal Picture Upload, the realm of possibilities is endless. This mode allows customers to select and showcase their own pictures as the backdrop for the MINI circular display via the MINI App. Personal Mode also extends to match the interior lighting and dashboard projection with a seamlessly chosen hue, complementing the relevant image, much like the Vivid Mode. Trail Mode While most if not all of these modes will carry over to the entire MINI family, Trail will be unique to the MINI Countryman.m Thematically Trail is designed feel rugged and fit the profile of the MINI Countryman. A virtual compass, accompanied by real-time vehicle inclination data, symbolizes venturing into off the conventional path. Or down the street. Either way it looks cool. 6. MINI going electric and there’s a lot that will be gained by that transition. But there’s also a lot that can be lost. One of those things is the visceral qualities of driving. Acceleration and even steering feel can be retained but gone is the ability to change gears and the overall aural feedback that so often makes driving satisfying. The last part MINI intends to do something about. Enter the MINI Sound Design team and the all new MINI Sound Design for the all new J01 MINI Cooper electric. While we had plenty of hands-on time with the interior and the digital experience, we didn’t get a chance to hear the new sound design in context. But we did hear them isolated and here’s what we know. The MINI has made the brand and even Experience Mode soundscapes an integral part of the overall driving experience. From all-new driving sounds in the interior to an unmistakable MINI brand sound that aims to confirms the car’s identity from the outside there’s a lot here that’s new. Particularly well done are the new MINI Experience Modes, and a whole collection of 30 new sound signals with information and warning functions. The overall feeling is one that is both familiar yet futuristic. And that’s not by accident. The MINI Sound Design team went deep in the MINI product catalog to capture some of those sounds. Specifically the team spent time with an original 1959 Mini and a 2006 JCW GP to capture some of the more iconic sound moments from those two models. The aim is to add an extra dose of emotional appeal to the interior of the MINI, shaping its acoustic statement and providing a distinctive MINI-typical feature on an acoustic level. Is sound really fundamental to the experience? In our time driving EVs (and the current F56 MINI Cooper Electric) there’s little question that they do add to the experience. But this new sound design taking things much further than we’ve seen before. The new sound design will extend to the entire range. We believe even some elements will make it to the internal combustion Countryman and Cooper. However not surprisingly the majority of the sound design will only be available on the EV models; the 2024 MINI Cooper electric, the 2025 MINI Aceman and the 2024 MINI Countryman Electric. 7. The all new MINI digital experience is a breathtaking change from what we have know for years. From the circular OLED screen to the modern yet funky interface, MINI has created something that feel truly differentiating in a sea of sameness. True to the brand, there is simply nothing like it in the marketplace. But what is it like to experience in person? We went hands-on with the new MINI digital experience in Munich recently and have a lot to say. For those that missed our (very long) in-depth look at the new circular display and the MINI OS9, make sure to reach our full review here. If you’re hear for our video review, then you’re in the right place. The New MINI Digital Experience – The Background MINI is reinventing every aspect of the brand and it starts not just with what’s under the hood but what is on the dash. We recently went hands-on in Munich with the new 2024 J01 MINI Cooper Electric and its circular OLED display, experiencing the new MINI OS9 in-person. While we can’t yet spill everything about the car, we’re excited to finally lift the veil on this revolutionary new digital experience. Last week we showed you the new MINI Cooper Electric interior. But the singe most interesting thing about the new interior was also the one thing we couldn’t talk about. Today we get to finally go into details on that circular OLED screen at the center of everything (or as MINI calls it, the MINI Interaction Unit). 8. Last week we went hands-on with the new mini interior. This Week MINI has take the wraps off of its new (circular) in-car digital experience and we can Finally Give you our hands-on impressions. While it looks great on at a glance, there’s much more going on below the surface. MINI is reinventing every aspect of the brand and it starts not just with what’s under the hood but what is on the dash. Written from inside the car itself, we walked you through every inch of the new MINI interior design. But the singe most interesting thing about the new interior was also the one thing we couldn’t talk about – that circular OLED screen at the center of everything (or as MINI calls it, the MINI Interaction Unit). Today we can finally talk about this radically different digital experience and its circular OLED display – the first ever in the automotive industry. A New Experience For All Future MINIs This digital experience will spread beyond just the all new J01 MINI Cooper Electric. We will see it in all new MINIs – from the all-new 2024 Countryman to the 2025 Aceman EV to even the heavily refreshed F66 ICE MINI Cooper. It’s also worth a reminder that the car we see here, the all electric J01 MINI Cooper Electric, will be available in Europe, Asia and South America at launch early next year. Plans are underway to bring the J01 in North America as soon as possible. The first product the North American market will get with this new experience will be the U25 MINI Countryman (available as both ICE and EV) followed by the heavily refreshed (ICE) F66 MINI Cooper and Cooper S. The Go-Kart Experience Mode in the new 2024 MINI Cooper ElectricHands-On With the New MINI Digital Experience Let’s start with the specs. The circular OLED screen is 9.5” (240 mm) wide however because of the bottom cutout measures about 9” in height. While it may seem like unusual design given the rectangles we’re all used to, it feels very natural in person thanks to the way MINI has organized the information. The “Charismatic Simplicity” design language (as MINI calls it) is focused on both minimalism and a bit of MINI character. The circular OLED display seamlessly accommodates both static and dynamic elements, with a clear and intuitive hierarchy (despite the shape). The top portion is dedicated to critical driving information which is close to your direct line of sight when looking through the windshield. While we didn’t drive the car we did sit in it for quite awhile and it felt like something we’d get use to within a drive or two. For those opting for the optional Head-up display, vital driving details are projected directly into the driver’s field of view. There are three parts of the experience – the driver centric top, the app-centric middle and the dock and tool belt as MINI calls it at the bottom. One cool trick – a single tap on the digital speed display transforms the entire circular display into the MINI speedometer. At the center of the screen lies the start menu, providing a hub for personalized content accessible through easy side-swipes. Just below, a fixed status bar houses essential menu items like “Navigation,” “Media,” “Telephony,” “All Apps,” and contextually, “Home,” all within direct reach. The tool belt can also be activated with a press of the star button on the multifunction steering wheel. The middle houses three live widgets that allows apps to run and display information. For instance you could have your paired phone to the left and your music playing to the right and the navigation app running in the center. All positions have the ability to show live updates and allow for a quick top to maximize. At the bottom are three zones. The left and right house the dual climate zones which felt very different than other similar experiences due to micro-animations. The center is what Mac users will likely refer to as the dock. Like a smartphone to allows you to place shortcuts for commonly used apps as well as open the full app view much like the home screen on an iPhone. The pixel density is so high we couldn’t even see any. But perhaps more important was the responsiveness. While this was a pre-production J01 MINI, the experience was fluid and full of micro-animations that felt immediately more modern than even the latest iDrive system in new BMWs. The experience felt almost at iOS levels of intuitive and the interactions and animations felt natural. MINI’s Secret Weapon – An All-New Technology Stack This is all made possible by not just talented strategists and designers but a very thoughtful technical approach. With this new digital experience MINI is also taking the wraps off of a completely new set of technologies that are aimed at future-proofing MINI experiences for some time to come. That future-proofing starts with Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack which does several things for MINI. For one it allows MINI to leverage the massive scale of the Android App store which MINI will create their own subset of. But more importantly it allows MINI to leverage the army of Android engineers worldwide meaning that the platform MINI will rely on for future innovation is open and has a bright future. But don’t mistake the software stack as influencing the user experience. That’s 100% MINI’s own thinking and execution built on top of what is invisible but powerful technology. It’s also important to remember we’re not talking about Android Auto here. That is what is known as projection software. AOSP is the the open source layer MINI’s system is built on. Android Auto and CarPlay will continue to run on top of it as projection layers should owners prefer that experience. MINI is keenly aware that most consumers have never heard of AOSP. They want an infotainment system that is intuitive, has the services they need and allows them to use CarPlay (and to a lesser extant Android Auto). This new MINI OS 9 not only allow that but does so with experience design that is uniquely MINI’s. This is not CarPlay – photos of that feature have yet to surface.Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be standard on the new MINI OS9. Both will work inside of the circular screen as 4×3 rectangles allowing for the critical drive and climate functionally to be present and functional. However it’s MINI’s hope that it’s new navigation and other apps lessen the appear of these projection offerings. All New Navigation Takes on Google Maps The new, cloud-based MINI Navigation system provides fast and precise route calculation that MINI says is on par with Google and Apple Maps. Drawing on real-time traffic data transmitted at 5G speeds, in conjunction with sophisticated forecasting models, the system’s route calculation feels lightning-fast and highly dynamic. As users open the navigation app, the circular display is filled entirely by an immersive map, its color scheme adapting to the chosen MINI Experience Mode. One area MINI has an advantage on other mapping apps is the tight integration with the car itself. Once the destination is entered, an optimized charging route is calculated if the vehicle’s current range falls short. Constantly evolving, both the algorithm and speed of charging-optimized route calculation undergo continuous refinement. Crucial charging information, such as the estimated state of charge upon arrival, recommended charging time, and target state of charge, is laid out in the route overview. Live data updates during the drive and will alert you if originally planned charging stations are suddenly unavailable. Worth noting, the system ensures a minimum 10 percent charge level at the final destination and charging stops, but adaptable drivers can tweak this setting to their preference. Charging becomes even more convenient with the integration of authorization and start/stop functions into the MINI App. All well and good but MINI needs to do something truly different to win against Google and Apple Maps. Enter Augmented View which gives drivers a live stream in the circular display with overlayed information added for navigation. In complex intersections, for instance, an animated directional arrow seamlessly integrates into the video stream, guiding the driver toward the optimal turn-off for their intended route. Adding to the magic, augmented reality overlays in the live video stream also furnish information on local parking regulations. While we haven’t experience this yet in the new MINI, we have driven similar systems in BMWs and it’s genuinely helpful. The optional MINI Connected Package includes a host of innovative navigation functions, including precision lane guidance visualizations. At the center of this experience lies the circular OLED screen, the MINI Interaction Unit, which adapts its design and content based on the selected mode. The circular OLED screen (aka the MINI Interaction Unit) adapts its designs and content according to the chosen mode. An optional projector situated behind the OLED display casts color and patterns onto the dashboard, resulting in a unique, immersive experience that extends even to the door trim. While there’s a few really compelling Modes, Personal Mode was really intriguing. Owners can integrate their own pictures from their smartphone gallery as the backdrop for the display, using the MINI App. The ambient lighting automatically adopts a color that complements the selected image. Interestingly the optional Head-up display adapts to the chosen MINI Experience Mode as well. But we’ll have to take MINI’s word for it as this point we didn’t get to see it in action. Timeless is a influenced by the original Mini gauge designIn the MINI “Timeless” driving sound, MINI merged the past and present. Trail Mode will be exclusive the all new MINI CountrymanTrail Mode While most if not all of these modes will carry over to the entire MINI family, Trail will be unique to the MINI Countryman.m Thematically Trail is designed feel rugged and fit the profile of the MINI Countryman. A virtual compass, accompanied by real-time vehicle inclination data, symbolizes venturing into off the conventional path. Or down the street. Either way it looks cool. Sound Design That is Distinctly MINI With MINI going electric, sound design will become an integral part of the driving experience. While we had plenty of hands-on time with the interior and even elements of the digital experience, we didn’t get a chance to hear the new sound design in context. But we did hear them isolated and here’s what we know. Going back to the roots, the MINI Sound Design team sampled elements of the 1959 Classic Mini. The MINI is making bold claims about their brand-centered soundscapes being an integral part of the digital user experience. From all-new driving sounds in the interior to an unmistakable MINI brand sound that supposedly confirms the car’s identity from the outside, jingles for the new MINI Experience Modes, and a whole collection of 30 new sound signals with information and warning functions – it seems like they’re leaving no stone unturned in making sound key to the overall driving experience. The MINI Sound Design team grabbing element of sound from the 2006 R53 JCW GPMINI’s aim is to add an extra dose of emotional appeal to the interior of the MINI, shaping its acoustic statement and providing a distinctive MINI-typical feature on an acoustic level. Is sound really fundamental to the experience? In our time driving EVs (and the current F56 MINI Cooper Electric) there’s little question that they do add to the experience. But MINI is taking things further than we’ve seen before. For instance the new MINI Experience Modes have their own all-new soundscapes that connect to each theme. You can hear more in our first look video. The MINI itself is the default character for the Intelligent Personal AssistantMINI Intelligent Personal Assistant – Alexa in MINI Form Like the new Sound Design we didn’t get a chance to use the new personal assistant but we have used similar tech in new BMWs. Like the BMW Perusal Assistant, the MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant can be activated using the prompt (In this case “Hey MINI”) or by pressing the push-to-talk button on the steering wheel, initiating a voice-controlled interaction showcased on a circular OLED display with dynamic graphical elements, typography, and an avatar. Users will have the option to select between two visual representations – a stylized “MINI” or the familiar figure “Spike,” catering to the preferences of MINI enthusiasts. The capabilities of this intelligent assistant extend to controlling essential functions such as navigation, telephony, radio, and temperature via voice command. Moreover, drivers can make travel-related requests, such as inquiring about weather conditions at their destination or locating nearby charging stations. The system incorporates two front-headliner microphones to automatically discern between the driver and front passenger’s speech, ensuring seamless interactions. Spot is an optional character for MINI’s Intelligent Personal AssistantAdditionally, MINI promises a unique and engaging experience with the assistant’s chit-chat functionality, which will provide MINI-specific answers, jokes, and stories to users. This feature aims to add a touch of personality and brand-typical character to the driving experience. In the United Kingdom, the MINI Intelligent Personal Assistant will be powered by Alexa Custom Assistant’s AI technology stack at the time of market launch. This integration is expected to deliver natural dialogue capabilities, complementing the brand-defining voice. However, in other markets, these advanced voice features, along with other capabilities enabled by the Alexa Custom Assistant, will be introduced later through over-the-air updates. The BMW App Store in the new BMW X1 gives us a clue as to how the MINI version might workThe All New MINI App Store Based on the Google Play Store MINI’s previous foray into in-car apps has been less than successful. Yes MINI was a first mover in the space debuting apps well over a decade ago. But time has quickly moved on and the current experience is clearly dated. That is ending with the new generation of MINI models with an all new MINI Connected App Store. In conjunction with the optional MINI Connected package, the MINI App Store offers users access to a diverse array of practical and entertaining apps that continue to evolve over time. This selection includes gaming, music, and video streaming apps, among others, tailored to cater to the preferences of customers in different regions. Building upon its introduction in current BMW models, the new MINI family introduces a distinctive in-car gaming experience to its customers. When the vehicle is stationary and awaiting high-voltage battery recharge, drivers and passengers can engage in casual gaming through the AirConsole App. Setting up the gaming experience is a straightforward process, with players using their smartphones as controllers and connecting to the MINI Interaction Unit via a QR code on the OLED display. The AirConsole technology allows games to be readily accessible and controlled through smartphones, accommodating multiple players, including those in the rear, who can participate in the in-car gaming fun during breaks in the journey. Whether playing solo, as a team, or in competition mode, the experience is designed to be inclusive and engaging. The game selection primarily consists of casual games, known for their ease of play and intuitive controls. Players can enjoy a diverse range of gaming genres, including racing, sports, general knowledge quizzes, music quizzes, simulation, strategy, jump-and-run, and puzzle games. Notable titles such as Go-Kart Go, Golazo, Music Guess, and Overcooked contribute to the ever-evolving portfolio of available games. Spotify and the 3D map view are just some of the ways you can customize the experienceIn addition to gaming, music enthusiasts can seamlessly integrate their Spotify accounts with MINI Operating System 9, enhancing the music streaming experience. By scanning a QR code, MINI customers can enjoy an intuitive and visually appealing music streaming service integrated into the circular MINI Interaction Unit. The MINI Connected services, with their refreshed offerings, are set to be rolled out in over 40 countries upon the launch of the new MINI family. 2024 MINI Cooper Electric & 2024 Countryman Debut and Release Timing The new J01 MINI Cooper electric and U25 MINI Countryman (electric & ICE) will debut at the Munich Motor Show this September. 9. Happy National Day of Motoring! MINI USA is once again promoting the joy of driving and celebrating the beloved American road trip. And there’s no better automotive brand to promote the road trip than MINI. Haven’t heard the National Day of Motoring and why is MINI promoting it? In short this official holiday serves as a reminder to all Americans to embark on journeys across the vast expanse of the United States, relishing the freedom and excitement of open roads. At the heart of this celebration lies MINI’s dedication to delivering an unparalleled “fun to drive” experience, attracting a closely-knit community of enthusiastic owners. Their shared passion for rallying on the roads whenever the opportunity arises creates a camaraderie that sets MINI apart from any other automotive brand. While this year may not see the legendary biennial event “MINI TAKES THE STATES,” which has been a cornerstone of MINI owners’ road rally since 2006, we take this opportunity to revisit some of the remarkable moments from the various annual MINI owners’ rallies, thoughtfully organized by both MINI USA and the passionate owners themselves. MINI Takes the States Among these iconic events, “MINI TAKES THE STATES” stands out, a biennial extravaganza that gathers MINI owners from all corners of the nation and beyond. The event presents a remarkable opportunity to revel in the charm of U.S. backroads and byways, whether traversing coast-to-coast, heading north to south, or converging from multiple starting points at a central meeting spot. Thousands of MINI owners congregate during the balmy summers of alternate years to partake in this unforgettable celebration of the open road and the unbreakable bonds within their community. However, MINI’s commitment to fostering togetherness and shared experiences extends beyond “MINI TAKES THE STATES.” A prime example is “MINI Together,” a nationwide rally experience that combines three unique elements: an individual driving adventure, a digitally engaging app-based experience featuring tasks, trivia, and a thrilling scavenger hunt, culminating in a grand virtual get-together where participants from all corners of the nation come together to share their day’s experiences. This year’s “MINI Together” event is slated for November 2023. MINIs On Top Moreover, each year, MINI owners excitedly assemble at the base of Mount Washington in New Hampshire for “MINIs on Top,” an annual event where camaraderie, competition, and customization converge. MINI owners showcase their vehicles vying for top honors. But the true beauty of this event lies in its philanthropic mission, having raised over $130,000 for various charitable causes over the years. Run by a dedicated committee and supported by MINI dealerships and part suppliers nationwide, “MINIs on Top” embodies the spirit of giving back. MINIs on the Mac The enthusiasm and fervor of the MINI community know no bounds, as demonstrated by the awe-inspiring “MINIs on the Mack” event. This jubilant gathering sees over 1,300 MINI Coopers parading across the iconic Mackinac Bridge in Mackinaw City, Michigan, with the aim of breaking the record for the largest-ever MINI Cooper parade. Organized with unwavering zeal by MINI of Grand Rapids and backed by MINI USA, this spectacle brings together a vibrant community of car enthusiasts for a memorable and heartwarming experience. This year’s MINIs on the Mac takes place August 4-5th. MINIs on the Dragon Not to be outdone, “MINIs on the Dragon” is the single best driving event in North America. Here, MINI drivers embark on an enthralling drive along the famed “Tail of the Dragon” (US 129), an awe-inspiring road enveloped by the majestic Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest. Featuring a delightful array of activities, including a food drive, cabin crawl, car show, scavenger hunts, and group dinners, “MINIs on the Dragon” is perhaps the best old-school, driving oriented MINI event there is. MINIs Take Route 66 Last but not least, “MINIs Take Route 66” serves as a crowning jewel in the roster of MINI owner events. Drawing participants from all corners of the country, this remarkable journey traces the iconic Route 66, starting from the picturesque Santa Monica in Los Angeles, California, all the way to the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois. This privately owned and organized event, led by the passionate MINI owner community, embodies the spirit of adventure and unity that defines the MINI experience. As National Day of Motoring comes to a close, MINI USA remains steadfast in its commitment to nurturing the bond between car and driver, fostering unforgettable experiences, and embracing the cherished American road trip spirit. With each passing year, the MINI community grows stronger, and their passion for the open road burns brighter, uniting car lovers from all walks of life in a joyous celebration of motoring freedom. 11. MINI invited MotoringFile to be one of the first outlets in the world to experience the all new MINI family. And first up is the revolutionary new interior which is a massive departure from all we know from the MINI brand up until this point. In fact it’s closer to the 1959 Mini in concept than any of the previous new MINIs of the last 20 years. For the most thorough review at this new interior you will find, see our hands-on review. But if you’re here to watch that review in video form, you’ve come to the right place. 12. I’m in an undisclosed location just outside of Munich and I can’t believe me eyes. In front of me is nothing less than the future of MINI – the very cars we’ve been looking at spy shots of for years. And yet, I can’t tell you about it. Except for the thing I’m sitting in. As I write this I’m sitting inside the all new J01 MINI Cooper SE with my the seat all the way back, my MacBook Pro on my lap and its screen resting on the steering wheel. It’s all a bit surreal as I look around at what we’ve only seen spy photos of and speculated on for years. If the outside of this all new MINI looks like an evolution, the interior is nothing short than revolution. MINI has opened this secret facility to MotoringFile to show off the future. And the first part of that future we can discuss is that all new interior of the MINI. And while I’m sitting in the J01 MINI Cooper electric, much what we see here will spread throughout the products range. The entire MINI family will have consistent elements such as the physical controls, materials and design themes you see here. the 2024 Electric MINI Cooper SE – A Revolution Inside The interior revolution starts with eliminating much of what we’ve come to expect inside of a car. Gone is leather, polyurethane dashboards and even that familiar rectangular screen in the center. In their places are more environmentally friendly materials and simpler forms that feel more connected to the classic 1959 Mini than the 2023 MINI this car replaces. The actual photo that MINI Designers had on the wall as they begin concepting the future in-car experienceIn fact if you look at that original Mini interior and the J01 you’ll see a striking similarity in overall design and focus on simplicity. That’s no accident. MINI designers actually started not with a clean sheet but a single photograph. An press photo of the original Mini interior in all its simplistic glory. But how in an age of screens, technical complexity and countless safety regulations could they achieve a design that followed that same ethos? It started by taking things away. The original Mini didn’t have leather, it had fabric. It also didn’t have a classic instrument cluster but instead had only a central collection of gauges. And the overall design was focused comfort, storage and ease of production. Today MINI has many more things to consider. That central gauge is now a screen and while ease of production still matters, so does the circular economy and the ability to recycle 95% of everything you see here. Dissecting The New MINI Interior The Return of the Rail Sitting in the new J01 electric MINI Cooper you can’t help but notice the openness compared to the current F56. There’s also been a focus on simplicity driven by the original Mini’s interior. For instance gone is the center console and shifter. In its place is an open space that allows for movable cupholders and storage bins. Want more cupholders? You can add them just like you can add larger storage units as well. If that sounds familiar it’s because this new system is inspired by the original Countryman’s center rail, this new system allows for an almost infinite number of configurations with MINI’s upcoming accessory plans. But what makes this different than the rail system is that it’s functional storage with no accessories at all. MINI will introduce a modular storage and accessory system with the J01 electric Cooper and the rest of the new MINI family Minimal Armrest Design Another big change is the armrest which has become much more minimal. In an effort to simplify the center console area further MINI has designed the armrest into the driver’s seat itself. It’s much smaller than before but in practice feels comfortable and seems perfectly placed for the job. The new seats feature a simpler in design but one that has plenty of bolstering and a longer bottom cushion for more support. The driver seat houses a small armrest.Redesign Seats The seats themselves are a completely new design. Again with a focus on simplicity MINI has eliminated the thigh bolster from the latest generation of sport seats and designed a bottom cushion that extends further outward reducing the need for additional support. I’m 6’2″ and I have relied on that thigh bolster in every MINI and BMW that offers it. And yet I see how MINI has shaped this new seat to limit the need. No it’s not as supportive but it’s noticeably better than the R50 for R56 seats which also didn’t offer a thigh-bolster. The new vent design is much more minimal and blends in with the dash designHeating and Cooling – a Mix of Digital & Physical Controls The heating and cooling controls have been moved into the center screen as MINI has gone to great lengths to eliminate physical controls. While that is is generally a recipe for disaster for in-car experience, we get a sense in talking to the designers that MINI has learned from the mistakes of brands like VW and even parent company BMW. But we’ll have more on that next week. But MINI’s rethink of heating and cooling doesn’t end there. Even the vents have been radically simplified with a design that is both minimal and blends them into the dash. But crucially they have very tactile and satisfying controls that feel much more substantial and well made. Fabric dash? It’s a bold move from MINI but one that looks great in person. Why Is there Fabric on the Dash? Yes you’re seeing that correctly, that is fabric on the dash and doors. They both have gone from a polyurethane based foam rubber outer layer to fabric that is both made from recycled fibers and itself is easily recyclable. It’s also crucially designed to keep the car cooler as well and reportedly won’t fade in the sun. As you can expect MINI will offer a variety of designs including one or two options of single color dashes for those who wish to keep things a bit more low-key. How does it feel? Very robust and clearly designed for a very long life-span. However my first thought was, how do I clean it? I asked folks from MINI that question and the answer was pretty simple – a damp cloth. Oh and that light you see on both sides of the dash? We can’t go into details on that yet but come back next Thursday and we’ll have answers. The new door panel take a more minimalist approach doing away with the design elements that MINI has used for over 20 years. MINI Goes Modern With a New Door Panel Design Also new is the entire interior door panel design which has moved away from the design themes we’ve seen since the R50 and to something that feels more modern and minimal. The grab handle is now cleanly integrated into the design that then flows directly into the speakers (in this example with the optional H/K speakers). The handle itself is much lower than any modern MINI and yet feels more intuitive and better placed. It’s also a cleaner, simpler design that feels more intuitive from the first moment you slip your hand from the wheel to the handle. The new MINI steering wheel is a less bulbous, more modern design.the new Vegan Friendly Steering Wheel That’s Secretly a Two-Spoke The new MINI steering wheel, like most elements here will spread across the entire MINI family as more models are introduced. As the center part of the driving experience MINI has clearly done to great lengths to hone the look and (crucially) the feel. In hand it feels fantastic with excellent material quality and great feel in hand.Normally this wouldn’t be big news but this is MINI’s first fully vegan friendly model. That means there is no leather to be found on wheel or anywhere in the car. We were skeptical that they could create something that felt as sumptuous as the current MINI Yours steering wheel yet, to our hands, that’s exactly what this feels like. Soft and supple with good grip, it’s shocking that this isn’t leather. Note that middle spoke is actually a thick piece of fabric. One other interesting design note – it may not look it, but MINI has brought back the two-spoke steering wheel is the new MINI family. The center spoke is actually just a piece of fabric that visually connects the rim to the center of the wheel. New Gear Lever and Engine Start/Stop – Inspired by the 1959 Mini The new gear lever is a major departure as it both moves from the center console to the dash and sees a radical redesign. Sitting in the car the change makes a lot of sense. This is an electric car that will never have a manual so why not rethink the placement and design? Placement is surprisingly good as it’s both right next to the engine start switch (more on that in a second) and the steering wheel. That means it’s a very intuitive series of movements to start the car, pull the lever down to “D” and grab the wheel. It’s made even better by the quality of the materials. I never felt the F56 was particularly bad when it came to the chromed finished on the plastic toggles but this experience is a clear step-up. To the left of the new gear lever is the electric parking brake button. Simple and relatively out of the way (unless you need it), again it feels very intuitive in its placement. To the right of the gear lever is the new start/stop switch. As you can see it’s been designed to mimic the original Mini key from 1959. While the placement is identical to the F56, twisting the “key” is a cool nod to the past that feels very satisfying. The New MINI Experiences To the right of the start/stop switch is the “Experiences” toggle. While we don’t have final verification we do know from previous reporting that this allows you to change both the in-cabin experience and driving experience. We will see things like Green, Core and Go-Kart to name a few. But this isn’t just about different lighting, weighted steering and sharpening throttle response. With the Go-Kart setting for instance, the all electric J01 MINI Cooper SE will not only be quicker off the line but will adjust settings allowing for oversteer in corners. There’s much more we’ll have on MINI’s new Experiences next Thursday. The volume and audio on/off will remain a physical knob and is placed to the right side of the new control bank. Just below we have a short-cuts to; driving assistant features, exterior cameras, front defrost and rear defrost. Interior Size – How Does it Compare to the F56? While we don’t have data from MINI yet, I’m sitting here with my seat all the back and even though I’m 6’2″ my feet can just touch the pedals. If anything it feels slightly larger inside than the current car. That’s perception of openness is certainly helped by the reduction in elements on the dash and in the center console. But more importantly MINI has increased the wheelbase by over an inch with does seem to translate into slightly more cabin space. Sitting behind myself on the back is still a challenge but then again it feels very similar if not identical to the current MINI Cooper experience. The New MINI Interior – Our Initial Take As you can see MINI has relentlessly modernized the design elements throughout the interior. The mantra of form follows function is played out (almost) everywhere inside the cabin. Save for the faux black strap on the dash (which serves no purpose and is both stitched and glued down) there’s very little in the way of design elements that are directly tied to function or user-centered interactions. Of course actually being in the all new MINI interior helps bring it all to life. Photos can go a long way but it starts to make sense the more your hands move around the cabin, grab the wheel, open the doors, adjust the vents and hit start. It all feels right from the cold touch of the shift lever to the surprisingly supple vegan steering wheel. The physical interactions feel better thought through than any previous new MINI and additions like the fabric on doors and dash seems like a peek into the future. 2024 MINI Electric & 2024 Countryman Debut and Release Timing The new J01 MINI Cooper electric and U25 MINI Countryman (electric & ICE) will debut at the Munich Motor Show this September. 13. The 2025 JCW MINI Cooper is the car that many MotoringFile of us have been patiently waiting to hear updates on. Will it finally get an increased power output? Will MINI keep the manual transmission as an option? Through several sources we’ve confirmed new details on the F66 JCW ahead of its launch next year. What we’ve found is a car that will be an evolved F56 JCW in most ways with a couple of surprising exceptions. F66 2025 JCW MINI Cooper Power Output The 2025 JCW MINI will have a revised B48 engine under the hood – more specifically the B48A20O2. That means the 2025 MINI JCW will continue to have a 228 hp output. Needless to say that number will disappoint all those that expected MINI to increase power. Rumors had ben floated of something near 260 hp and plenty had hoped for something even bigger. Yet this is a revised engine and that means we will see some small tweaks. The headline figure is the torque which will increase from 236 to 258 ft lbs. A before that torque will max-out low in the rev range (1,450) meaning it will be available almost immediately. The B48A20O2 is also a cleaner engine than its predecessor and should see a slight increase in MPG as well. No the new JCW will not have a single exhaust pipe.F66 2025 MINI JCW Transmission Options For those reading MotoringFile this likely won’t be a total surprise as MINI had signaled they were done with the manual when the last F56 is built in March 2024. However until now we’ve not had confirmation from our sources that the JCW would be included in this change. We do now. According to our sources the 2025 JCW MINI Cooper will not be available with a manual transmission. In its place will be a revised 7 speed dual clutch (DCT) with JCW specific software for more aggressive programing which should decrease shift times. The revised dual clutch transmission is just like the one offered in current Cooper and Cooper S models combining two partial transmissions in a single housing. The core element of the system consists of two oil-cooled wet clutches: one of these is responsible for the even transmission ratios (2, 4, 6) while the other is for the uneven ratios (1, 3, 5, 7) and reverse. During travel, one of the two clutches is open and the other is closed. They interact when the driver shifts up or down: opening one clutch activates closure of the second at the same time. The gear selector could move to the dash in the form of a discrete toggle switch (on the left). The F66 is also rumored to be getting the J01’s transmission shifter design as well which moves the lever just below the center screen. If that happens expect a revised center console with more storage and naturally larger cupholders. What will remain are the paddle shifter which will be standard on all JCW models. Why Is MINI Not Upgrading the 2025 MINI JCW For This New Generation? If you’ve been following MotoringFile you’ll know that MINI is splitting its core model – the Cooper – into two distinct products. That means we’ll see two next generation MINI Coopers (hatches) built on opposite ends of the planet on two different platforms; one a EV (J01) and one ICE powered (F66). This move will allow MINI to offer innovative electric offerings while still selling to the traditional ICE market for as long as possible. Why no power increase? Simply put MINI is spending enormous sums of money to turn its entire range into EVs. With that massive investment as backdrop, the brand has had to be smart where it reinvents vs where it evolves its products. The F66 is the latter and will be a heavily evolved version of the F56. The good news is that the F56 is a great based in which to evolve from. It’s been the most successful new MINI yet and has an excellent track record in both reliability and performance. The F66 will see styling changes that mirror the J01 and huge tech improvements inside the cabin. But mechanically it will be mostly the same car with just the Cooper S getting a noticeable engine upgrade (more on that soon). That leaves the F66 JCW as a warmed over version of the F56 JCW with no manual option. However there is a caveat there. We have heard from other sources (unconfirmed) that there is still an outside chance MINI USA might bring back the manual option later in the F66 lifecycle as a special edition. While that rumor sounds fantastic to us, it is sadly unconfirmed at this time. What do you think? Does the F66 JCW sound interesting with its styling changes and technology upgrades? Or is it a non-starter without a manual. Let us know below in the comments. The post Exclusive: F66 2025 MINI JCW Power Output & Transmission Revealed appeared first on MotoringFile. 14. MINI provided a glimpse of the future MINI family at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2023. The brand premiered the all-electric MINI Concept Aceman, the JCW 1to6 that raced at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring and the highly limited-edition MINI Cooper SE Convertible. The festival, held in the picturesque parkland around Goodwood House in West Sussex, celebrated automotive culture with a diverse range of participants. MINI showcased their diverse product portfolio on site, featuring the MINI JCW 1to6 Edition, MINI Concept Aceman, and the strictly limited MINI Cooper SE Convertible. One of the highlights was the legendary Hillclimb, which provided automotive enthusiasts a rare opportunity to witness the vehicles and drivers up close. The MINI John Cooper Works 1to6 Edition made its British motorsport debut on the hillclimb following its podium finish at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. This special edition, limited to 999 units, features a unique high-performance model with a manual 6-speed transmission. It pays homage to MINI’s motorsport roots, delivering the brand’s typical go-kart feeling and driving fun. Charlie Cooper, the grandson of racing car engineer John Cooper, had the honor of driving the edition car. The Aceman concept gives us a clue of what to expect for MINI’s new in-vehicle digital experience.Another exciting debut was the MINI Concept Aceman, a concept car that showcased the future design, interior, and electric performance of MINI’s upcoming models. It made its debut in the UK ahead of a production launch late next year. Visitors to Electric Avenue had the opportunity to experience the first all-electric MINI Cooper SE Convertible. This limited model, restricted to 150 units for the UK market, was showcased in the festival section focused on electrified automobility. 15. Recently we’ve begun seeing the first real inventory of the electric MINI Cooper SE at US dealers. It’s the first time since launch that the electric F56 has not only been available to look at but perhaps even choose which one you might want on a lot. And now we’re hearing (and seeing) some of the first discounts on the car. Why now? For one more inventory simply means there are more cars to move. The market has been surprising but with a range of only 110 miles on the EPA cycle you can’t imagine it’s that large. Could be be that MINI’s production has finally started to surpass demand? Or could shoppers are becoming better informed (perhaps reading MotoringFile) and are waiting for what’s coming. The US won’t see the next generation J01 electric MINI Cooper likely for another few years. But what we will get is the all U25 electric MINI Countryman – a car much better suited for the vast distances that we have in this country. In all this could be a good thing for consumer. Not only is MINI USA looking to boost used Cooper SE inventory but it would appear there will be more to choose from on the lot. And better still we’re beginning to see the first discounts. We’re not going to offer free advertising to dealers but from what we’re seeing the discounts aren’t large and don’t appear to be public. But rest assured if you want a small deal on an F56 electric MINI Cooper SE, they are out there. The post The First Electric MINI Cooper Discounts Begin to Appear appeared first on MotoringFile. 16. Today MINI USA is unleashing an all new (and hilarious) AI powered experience promoting the electric MINI Cooper. The digital experience and advertising campaign was done in collaboration with Pereira O’Dell, an independent creative agency and is titled “Trust Your Inner MINI-Logue.” The concept is simple – the most persuasive voice in a car buying journey is inside the customer’s own head. So bring it out right? That’s what the campaign aims to do with the help of AI. Bringing this to life, MINI USA and Pereira O’Dell have developed an interactive artificial intelligence (AI) experience on the MINIUSA.com website. Here, users have the opportunity to record themselves asking questions such as, “Why should I choose a MINI Electric?” Leveraging cutting-edge voice cloning and deep learning technologies, the AI system generates a personalized version of the user that not only sounds like them but also looks like them. This advancement enables individuals to engage in a genuine conversation with their AI clone, exploring all the compelling reasons why they should consider the MINI Cooper SE electric vehicle. Subsequently, the program generates a shareable video optimized for social platforms and fun at parties (or just MINI events). With “Trust Your Inner MINI-Logue,” MINI USA and Pereira O’Dell aim to inspire potential buyers to embrace the exhilaration and environmental benefits of electric mobility. By intertwining advanced AI technology with the inherent allure of MINI vehicles, this campaign seeks to captivate consumers in a fun and engaging way, showcasing MINI’s commitment to innovation and driving pleasure. So what’s really Happening Here? The way MINI explains is that the AI technology creates a version of you that looks and sounds *almost* exactly like real life — except for one very important detail — the voice you hear will be lower in frequency, so it sounds more like the voice you actually hear in your head. With the help of AI voice cloning and deep learning technology, the user would actually have a conversation…with themselves. In an attempt to convince yourself, the AI version of yourself will give you more reasons why you should get a MINI Electric. What Else Will We See? In addition to the AI experience, MINI USA and Pereira O’Dell will run a series of spots across digital and social media channels starting today, July 10. The spots will feature Unreal Engine MetaHuman animations – floating, talking heads visualizing the internal dialogues of someone attempting to convince themself of the multitude of fun, wonderful, and sometimes peculiar reasons why owning a MINI Electric makes perfect MINI. “Everyone’s first reaction to hearing their own voice is usually the same, ‘do I really sound like that?’” says Creative Director at Pereira O’Dell, Jordan Strode-Young. “We want people to hear that inner voice they’re so familiar with. It’s been a fun challenge working with Current Studios to get that voice—your voice—just right.” Head to MINIUSA.com to experience it yourself. 17. The concept of a circular economy isn’t a revolutionary new concept but one that has been practiced since humans first crawled out of caves. But doing it at scale is the real trick. That’s exactly what BMW and MINI are aiming for with their massive recycling center in Unterschleißheim, Germany. To experience this unseen part of the automotive lifecycle, BMW invited us for an inside look at the plant, the process and even the cars that are ultimately crushed. Oh and we got to blow up some airbags for fun. Whether it’s test mules, concepts or even customer cars BMW crushes them all. But how does that process work and what does it look like? We got an inside view of how BMW and MINI recycle cars at the end of their life. Read on at BimmerFile.com (link in bio) The recycling process is all about closing material cycles, extending resource life, and reusing them more efficiently. None of this is new for BMW. The brand has been designing its cars to be easily recycled since the early 90’s – well before any regulations had been put into place. Since then the EU has required any vehicle from 2008 onwards should be reach a recycling target level of 85 percent and a recovery target level of 95 percent by 2015. Luckily BMW has been exceeding that for years and has internal goal of 95% recyclable for all its new cars. The original F54 Clubman concept. One of two made and this being the unlucky one. Treasures Were Lurking Everywhere We first entered the “waiting room” which is a parking lot outside of the plant. While most cars were test mules and pre-production (some with camo included) there were plenty of interesting things to look at. A Rolls Royce Spectre prototype disguised as a 7 Series was the first thing we noticed. Then in the corner was something unmistakable – at least to us. Peaking out from under a tarp was the unique shape of the 2nd generation Clubman concept with its memorable 20” wheels and unique front air damn. Apparently it was one of two that were made for the launch of the F54. But don’t worry, according to MINI the only running prototype has been saved deep in a secret Munich basement. And we did ask if I could buy the car or at least wheels. And naturally I was told no. Much of what we saw looked intact and almost perfectly ready for the road. However by law BMW can’t sell any pre-production products and thus all must be broken down and recycled. But not all is lost, some components such as wheels are inspected and sold as pre-owned accessories by German dealers. The battery pack from a new BMW i7Batteries and Orange Cords Our first step inside was the battery dismantling room where a number of hybrid and full EVs were in various states of undress. It’s in this room that BMW technicians safely remove all live batteries destined for their own intricate dismantling and recycling process. One thing that was fascinating to see was the massive growth in battery size and how the cars themselves have been designed to accommodate them. We all know it on paper but seeing how BMW has engineered cars like the new 7 Series to exist as both an EV and an ICE variant is really astonishing. From there we entered the main part of the plant where we saw cars stacked to the rafters. It’s here where BMW systematically detonates the airbags and all other explosive safety devices on the car. The process involves a lot of wires, ear protectors and a huge tethered remote with lots of buttons that detonates all those changes. Oh did I mention I got to detonate them? One of the more satisfying things I’ve done in my life. The BMW M8 Gran Coupe in its final formSomebody would have wanted those belts surelyThe Sad End to Beautiful Cars Everywhere I looked there were interesting cars that felt just wrong to see about to be crushed. A pre-production i8 Spyder in seemingly perfect condition was particularly tough. As was a seemingly perfect MINI Convertible Cooper SE – yes even the highly limited electric MINI convertible meets its fate here. Unquestionably the star of the touch was the crusher. Yes that thing that turns cars into cubes is real and as alarming and strangely satisfying as you probably imagined. We were treated to a pre-production BMW X6 get turned into a long rectangle of metal and saw what was once a gorgeous Isle of Man BMW M8 in full cube form. What’s Next The same type of recycling mandates are also coming to the US. As it stands this is regulated by both the Federal Government as well as the states. Not unlike the EPA and state led environmental laws governing emissions, there are different rules per state. While things are still developing we would guess that progressive states like California will likely mandate a certain percentage of recovery from every vehicle sold in the state. Of course laws like don’t impact normal consumers but it does put pressure on automakers to be responsible in how they design and build their cars. To that point the vast majority of cars the BMW handles are from their own development processes. A very small percentage are made of consumer dropping off old, unwanted cars. Where does BMW and MINI go next? There will be an even greater emphasis put on using recycled and easily reused materials in future cars. We already know that MINI will be replacing polyurethane foam with fabric in future models and both BMW and MINI are aggressively moving towards leather free interiors that are easily re-used. The real challenge will be to see if they continue down these paths without sacrificing the qualities we love about the cars. But given what has been accomplished since the program started in the early 90’s, it’s easy to imagine anything is possible. 18. MINI made headlines in mid-April when it announced the production of its one millionth car of the current generation. And on Wednesday, June 28th, that momentous vehicle was delivered to first time MINI owners Steve and Kerry Lockhart. This particular MINI is an all-electric MINI Cooper SE, built at the Plant Oxford in the UK. The plant has a rich history and is celebrating its 110th anniversary this year, making this delivery even more special. The Lockharts, who hail from Redwood Meadows, expressed their excitement at being a part of MINI’s rich history, stating that they’ve been fans of the brand for years and had just purchased their first MINI earlier this year. “To be a small part of its rich history is both humbling and exciting,” said Steve Lockhart. The one millionth MINI 3 door of the current generation was delivered at MINI Calgary in Alberta, Canada, and boasts special features and badging to celebrate its heritage and milestone status. To mark the occasion, a celebration was hosted at MINI Calgary in true MINI style. But the most heartwarming moment for the Lockharts was a video message from Charlie Cooper, the grandson of John Cooper and a member of the MINI royal family, who welcomed them to the family. “You’re now part of the family, so get out there and enjoy it!” he exclaimed. MINI has been a beloved brand since its inception, with celebrities, musicians, and royalty all falling in love with its charm. The brand celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2019 and continues to capture hearts with its unique style and community. The Lockharts may have been surprised by the fanfare surrounding their new car, but it’s clear that they’ve fallen just as much in love with the brand, the vehicle, and the community. 19. MINI is splitting its core Cooper offering into two distinctly different, yet visually identical products; the all new (electric) J01 MINI Cooper and the refreshed (ICE) F66 MINI Cooper. While we’ve talked a lot about what to expect in the J01, today we’re turning our attention to the radically refreshed F66 2025 MINI Cooper. While we know the exterior design will evolve and the interior will be revolutionized, MINI is also adding a number of new (and surprising) convenience options available across the entire F66 range of models. Remote Start After years of requests, MINI is finally offering a remote start option for the F66 MINI Cooper. Based on our sources it appears that this option will be available across the entire petrol range of the F66 from the Cooper to the JCW. If it works like BMW’s revised remote start, the option can be used via both the key or the MINI app. How does it work? With the key simply click the lock button three times within a distance of 100 to 230 feet and the car will start/ Alternatively you will be able to use the MINI App to start the car from anywhere. Like the BMW system, we expect MINI’s with Remote Start to also be able to activate heating and cooling features. Electric Seats Electric seats aren’t are favorite option for a MINI as they add weight and complexity. But for most they are a welcome convenance. MINI has heard that feedback and will finally be offering them in its small car range. Our sources tell us that they will be the carried over from the F60 Countryman an F54 Clubman and will likely not be available with the optional JCW sport seats. That means we’ll see basic functionality such as angle, fore and after and lumbar support. The sport and JCW seats will continue to have manual thigh-bolsters. While this is a J01 electric MINI Cooper E, the F66 interior will mostly be identical.Driving Assistant Plus MINI will be offering both its Driving Assistant with a Driving Assistant Plus options that should mirror what we see on the new BMW X1. What’s the difference. Here’s a quick look at the features of each? Driving AssistantDriving Assistant PlusSteering and Lane Keeping AssistantSteering and Lane Keeping AssistantLane Change AssistantLane Change AssistantEmergency Stop AssistantEmergency Stop AssistantEvasion Aid AssistEvasion Aid AssistActive Cruise ControlIt’s unclear how MINI will offer both of these options in all markets. In the past BMW has included Driving Assistant functions in a Premium Package for instance. One thing that is missing is the Driving Assistant Pro which includes not just active cruise but steering wheel assist to help turn corners and even pass on command. That will likely be available on the all new U25 2025 Countryman and J01 2025 Cooper E but looks to be missing from the F66. These are just a few of the new convenience options that MINI will be offering on the F66 and it’s important to note that each market might package and offer these options differently. Personal eSIM Sources are also telling us to expect MINI to offer a Personal eSIM option enhancing connectivity. The option effectively will turn your MINI into an always connected device, providing you a data connection and the ability to make caIls without a phone. If it’s the same technical set-up as BMW’s option, the MINI personal eSIM will be a virtual, non-removable version of a traditional SIM. Interior Camera The BMW IX Interior camera – expect this to be nearly identical to what we’ll see in the F66 MINI Cooper and the entire next generation family of MINIs The interior camera option will allow drivers and passengers to take photos as well as check on your MIIN’s interior remotely with the MINI app. Like in BMWs, we believe MINI’s interior camera will also activated when the Remote Theft Recorder is triggered. In BMWs this system relays a message to the customer’s smartphone when the vehicle’s anti-theft alarm system is set off. The customer is then able to access and save the pictures from both the interior camera and the cameras at the front and rear of the vehicle and on its exterior mirrors. The option will also seamless integration of voice command and touch control to take snapshots. With the added convenience of a self-timer, we expect the art of capturing the perfect group shot will become second nature to MINI owners. Assuming this option mirrors what we see in recent BMWs, the camera will likely operate in HDR mode creating images with remarkable clarity. Sharing them will also likely be simple if MINI follows BMW’s lead. In BMWs sharing images works with the scan of a QR code on the main display. This is just a view of the most notable new convenience features we expect on the F66 MINI Cooper. There will be a handful that will be carried over from the current F56 like the optional Heads-up Display, Parking Assistant (and Assistant Plus), high-beam assist and anti-dazzle rear view mirror. It’s likely MINI will bring some if not all of these options into a convenience or premium package allowing for easier ordering. The F66 MINI Cooper Production Dates Our sources are telling us that we’ll see the refreshed F66 debut sometime in late 2023 or early 2024. We’d expect a tiered launch starting with the Cooper and Cooper S, followed by a JCW model. The Countryman will be build in Germany and available globally while Chinese build J01 will initially be sold only in Asia, Europe and South America. Eventually we’ll see the J01 built in the UK which may or may not coincide with its release in the US. 20. With products that are the better part of a decade old, you’d be right to assume MINI Sales in the US would be lagging as the market looks to what’s coming. Yet that’s not at all what we’re seeing. MINI USA has defied expectations with a 47.8% increase in sales for Q2 over what we saw in the same period in 2022. That’s a total of 7,585 vehicles sold which is one of the highest quarters we’ve seen in years. Looking at the entire year MINI USA has sold 14,869 vehicles which equates to a 23.8% increase compared to 2022. That’s a huge figure but made all the more impressive how long the current MINIs have been in market. 2023 MINI USA Sales – The Surprises The Countryman has been a massive seller for the quarter with a 143.7% increase year over year. That’s in comparison to the other volume seller, the F56 which saw flat sales. However don’t read too much into that as availability is a key driver some of these results. But the most interesting datapoint are those F57 Convertible sales numbers? You’re reading that right – 1,170 convertibles sold for a 114.7% increase. That’s close to the F55 four door sales which either tells us that the Convertible is market is heating up or the Countryman continues to eat into the F55 market. 21. MINI USA and the MINI John Cooper Works Team continued their excellent performance streak in the 2023 SRO TC America, trouncing the competition with three first place finishes at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) this weekend, as the 2023 race season crosses the halfway mark. Clay Williams swept the weekend for his fourth consecutive win in four races, showing his mastery of the #60 MINI JCW PRO to dominate the Touring Car (TC) class, and maintaining his current place as leader in the Driver’s Championship in the TC class. P.J. Groenke, driving the #62 MINI JCW, took home his first victory of the season with a first place finish in Race 2 for the Touring Car A (TCA) class. The Brownsburg, Ind. -based LAP Motorsports team, which operates the MINI JCW Team, was supported this weekend by four qualified MINI Dealer technicians, working alongside the team during practice, qualifying and race days as part of the MINI Technician Race Crew Program. The four dealer technicians are from dealers in the Southern and Eastern Regions, including one each from Flow MINI in Winston-Salem, N.C., MINI of West Chester in West Chester, Pa., and two from Hendrick MINI in Charlotte, N.C. Each of them supported the team for the entire weekend at Virginia International Raceway. The race team relies on the skill and knowledge of the technicians that work, day to day on MINI, to bring that expertise to the track. SRO America VIR 2023“It’s an incredible feeling to come away with so many first place finishes in one race weekend,” said Luis Perocarpi, team owner, LAP Motorsports. “This team continues to impress me, and I’m so excited to see what we can achieve through the remainder of the season.” SRO America VIR 2023This performance is a step up from the success seen last season at VIR, where Clay Williams took third place in Race 1 and Cristian Perocarpi took third place in Race 2. 22. BMW has taken the wraps off of the BMW X1 M35i and we can’t help but dissecting it with the new JCW Countryman in mind. Given that the X1 and the Countryman are twins mechanically, this new X1 M35i is essentially a preview of the forthcoming U25 JCW Countryman. From the engine to the gearbox to even the seats, there’s a lot here to take in. And from what we see, there’s a lot to like. At the heart of the X1 M35i is the most potent 4-cylinder ever from BMW. And if rumors are true, it will be at the heart of the all new (U25) JCW Countryman. The Revised B48 Four Cylinder Turbo BMW has incorporated several innovative features into these new engines, differentiating them from previous generations. Notable advancements include the adoption of the Miller combustion cycle, redesigned intake ports and combustion chambers, and various changes to the camshaft timing, injection, ignition system, and exhaust gas routing. The 2.0-liter unit boasts M-specific highlights, such as a stronger crankshaft and an optimized oil supply system for the pistons with cooling channels. It also benefits from main bearing shells and caps carried over from the latest-generation 6-cylinder engines. Additionally, the engine is equipped with VANOS variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing. These enhancements result in an impressive power output of 312 horsepower, generated between 5,750 and 6,500 rpm, and a peak torque of 295 lb-ft, available from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm. The extra power of the new engine is complemented by the assertive sound of the M-specific exhaust system. The BMW X1 M35i xDrive showcases two pairs of twin tailpipes, a distinctive feature found in high-performance models from BMW M. Positioned neatly on the rear apron, these twin tailpipes now grace the most powerful member of the compact SAV range. If spy photos are to be believed, we’ll see the same quad exhaust layout on the JCW Countryman. The X1 35i is equipped with a 7-speed double clutch transmission, something we know from sources will be at the heart of all ICE powered Countryman. This new unit promises to have much quicker shift times than we’ve seen previously from MINI’s dual clutch. New is an M Sport Boost function which gives a temporary boost in power. By pulling and holding the left-hand shift paddle for at least one second, drivers can activate this feature, which switches all powertrain and chassis systems to their sportiest settings. New All Wheel Drive mechanical limited-slip differential at the front axle The BMW X1 M35i xDrive comes with standard Adaptive M Suspension and sport steering – something that we’ll likely see in the JCW Countryman as well. The suspension smooths out bumps on the road surface while offering sporty damper characteristics in dynamic driving situations. The sport steering provides direct and speed-sensitive power assistance but optimized for more feel than the standard X1. M Compound Brakes Standard for the First Time This is a big deal for those know. The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is the first M performance model to offer optional M Compound brakes, comprising four-piston, fixed-caliper brakes with 15.2-inch drilled discs at the front wheels and single-piston, floating-caliper units with integrated parking brake and 13.0-inch discs at the rear. The inner-vented brake discs are composed of a grey cast iron ring and an aluminum chamber. The M Compound brakes offer very comfortable braking, superb feel, and stable stopping power under high loads. In addition to this, weight has been minimized and unsprung masses are substantially lower compared with conventional braking systems. We have no reason to believe the JCW Countryman will not get this massive upgrade. This new system also packages the brake activation, brake booster, and braking control functions within a single compact module, while an electric actuator is used to initiate the required brake pressure. Adaptive M suspension and sport steering as standard. Standard specification for the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive includes BMW’s adjustable Adaptive M Suspension. This is one area we might see the JCW Countryman differ as the standard U25 Countryman does without this feature despite the X1 having it as optional. It works as pressure peaks inside the dampers are smoothed out with the help of additional valves that are active on the rebound side. As a result, the system offers comfortable response when absorbing minor bumps in the road surface combined with sporty damper characteristics in dynamic driving situations. And the standard sport steering pairs Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance with a very direct rack ratio. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation for sharper agility. Contributing to the BMW X1 M35i xDrive’s combination of poise and agility is near-actuator wheel slip limitation technology. M Sport Seats Look a Lot Like JCW Seats to US The optional M Sport seats offer a wide range of electrical adjustment and feature an illuminated M logo in the upper section of the backrests. But more importantly they look like the second generation of the JCW seats that we saw on the previous (F60) JCW Countryman. Clad in MINI appropriate alcantara and cloth, these would make an excellent JCW seat. JCW Countryman Release Dates and Pricing While we don’t have confirmed release dates yet, sources tell us that the ICE U25 Countryman and Countryman S will begin production in November 2023. That would likely mean we’ll see the JCW Countryman begin production in March of 2024 as that’s the next major production change-over in BMW’s typical schedule. Pricing is very haze at the moment but we do know that the identical BMW X1 M35i is being priced at $49,900 and will likely be better equipped than the MINI. It also likely has the typical BMW tax applied to it which means the near identical MINI will surely cost less. How much less is still a guess at this point however. It would appear that the BMW X1 M35i is just about the same weight as the previous X1 28i at 3,713 lbs (there was no M35i in the most recent generation). 24. The BMW Group has taken a significant stride toward the production of electric vehicles in the United States with the groundbreaking of the first ever US BMW battery plant in Woodruff, South Carolina. Plant Woodruff will be a state-of-the-art facility designed from the ground-up to manufacture sixth-generation batteries to supply fully electric vehicles at the nearby BMW Manufacturing plant in Spartanburg. Could this eventually build batteries for MINIs assembled in the US? The construction of Plant Woodruff is part of BMW’s wider investment in its U.S. operations, which Chairman Oliver Zipse announced in October last year. The company pledged a total of $1.7 billion for its American facilities, with $1 billion allocated to prepare Plant Spartanburg for the production of fully electric vehicles and $700 million dedicated to constructing the high-voltage battery assembly plant. This significant investment makes it clear BMW’s commitment to the United States as a key market for electric vehicles and also paves the way for electric vehicle production in the US. The latter will unlock the new federal tax credits for electric BMW buyers – something that currently isn’t available on any BMW vehicle. Right now BMW builds its X line of crossover vehicles in Spartanburg and 2 and 3 series in it’s the new Plant San Luis Potosi. While both plants are centered around BMW’s rear wheel drive based CLAAR architecture and not the front wheel drive based platforms that MIIN uses, a unified EV architecture could be a game changer. This could be especially true of the Countryman and any future derivatives as it will effectively be twinned with future X1 and X2 EVs. The main BMW Plant in Spartanburg SCThe Woodruff facility, situated on 315 acres near the city, will encompass over one million square feet, including a technology building and support structures like a cafeteria, fire department, and energy center. With the establishment of Plant Woodruff, more than 300 jobs will be created onsite, and there is potential for further job growth as BMW expands its presence in South Carolina. The new battery assembly plant will not only boost the local economy but also contribute to the state’s reputation as a leader in the electric vehicle industry. The importance of this development was emphasized by Ilka Horstmeier, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Human Resources and Real Estate, who stated, “We’re making the BMW Group electric. Our new battery assembly plant in Woodruff will soon play an important role in our electric future here in the USA.” Horstmeier also highlighted the company’s commitment to its employees, mentioning the new Technical Training Center at the Spartanburg plant, which will prepare the 11,000 associates for the future, ensuring that they possess the necessary skills to thrive in the electric vehicle era. Dr. Robert Engelhorn, president and CEO of BMW Manufacturing, hailed the groundbreaking ceremony as the start of a new era at Plant Spartanburg, as it gears up to produce fully electric BMW X models for the global market. Dr. Engelhorn expressed his confidence in Plant Woodruff, emphasizing that it will be a state-of-the-art facility that prioritizes sustainability, flexibility, and digitalization. In line with its “local for local” principle, BMW will purchase battery cells for its electric vehicles from AESC, a partner company building a new 30 GWh battery cell factory in Florence, South Carolina. The Woodruff plant will receive the battery cells from AESC, utilizing them to manufacture batteries for the fully electric BMW X models produced at Plant Spartanburg. This collaboration between BMW and AESC strengthens the local supply chain and supports the growth of the EV industry in South Carolina. The batteries produced by Plant Woodruff will be powered by green electricity, as the facility will operate without the use of fossil fuels. In addition, BMW aims to reduce CO2 emissions per vehicle across its lifecycle by 40 percent by 2030. The commitment to sustainability is also evident in the building design and equipment choices for the Woodruff plant. The facility is designed to support the installation of a rooftop solar photovoltaic system, showcasing BMW’s readiness to embrace renewable energy sources. The use of smart LED lighting, occupancy sensors, and highly efficient electrical motors further contributes to reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainability. 25. MINI is about to usher in three new all electric models over the next 18 months, but the brand isn’t letting go of internal combustion engines (ICE) yet. For the 2025 model year MINI is heavily revising the F56 to create the dramatically refreshed F66. What is expected to be changed and how different will this car be? Thanks to sources we have extensive information from dates to colors to even individual options that will make the F66 feel almost like a all new car. The F66 MINI Cooper – Background First let’s discuss the name. Starting with its 4th generation MINIs, BMW is using the Cooper name exclusively on its smallest models. That means neither the Countryman or Aceman will have the Cooper name associated with it. That said there will still be two distinctly different yet similar Cooper models. In an unprecedented move there will be two next generation MINI Coopers built (initially) on opposite ends of the planet on two different platforms. This move will allow MINI to offer innovative electric offerings while still selling to the traditional ICE market for as long as possible. But key to this will be upgrading the F56 to a more modern spec in terms of tech. As you can tell by its codename, the F66 is an evolution of the F56 which is shared a chassis with. However MINI is refreshing the exterior design to better match the all new J01 electric MINI Cooper. That means we’ll see revised lights front and rear and even a slightly shortened front overhang. The key theme appears to be creating design consistency with the future of the brand – the all electric J01 MINI Cooper. The goal is clearly to unify the design language across all models allowing consumers to have a choice that feels strictly about the propulsion system and nothing else. It’ll also be key to markets where electric adoption will be naturally slower. In places where population is less centered in urban areas, MINI will likely be selling a majority of internal combustion vehicles which will make the F66 and the forthcoming U25 MINI Countryman critical for the brand. The F66 will mirror the look of the J01 with the shorter bonnet of the electric Cooper being the biggest difference as compared to the F66What’s The F66 MINI Cooper Going to Look Like? MINI is pulling out all the stops to make the F66 as similar to the J01 design as possible. The goal will be to unify the design language across all models allowing consumers to have a choice that feels strictly about the propulsion system and nothing else. Most don’t realize that the 2007 R56 was a major refresh of the previous generation R50/R53 chassis. However unlike the R50 generation MINI is only mildly revising the engine line-up to meet tightening emissions standards. So no new engines but revisions to the Cooper S specifically. F66 ICE MINI ModelsEngine CodeHorsepowerF66 MINI CooperTBD155 hpF66 MINI Cooper STBD200 hpF66 JCW MINI Cooper B48B20O1 (unconfirmed)231 hp (unconfirmed)MINI also doesn’t need to fix any significant issues like they did on the R50 which was never engineered to BMW quality standards. While this will be a heavy refresh, we believe that the changes we’ll see on this refresh/next generation F56 will be focused on design and technology with important tweaks to performance. The F66 MINI Cooper Models Like the F56, the F66 will have two models spawned from it. The F55 five door hatch will continue to bridge the gap between the smaller hatch and the larger Countryman. Similarly the F67 convertible will be based on the F66 as the F57 was to the F56. Both will see the same evolutionary exterior updates and the dramatic interior enhancements. Massive Upgrade In Technology Plenty of new tech is coming to MINI in this new generation. The most noticeable is the massive OLED screen that will be the center-piece of MINI’s new digital experience. While we don’t have details on the experience yet, these exclusive photos show a radically new digital experience. Here’s what MINI itself says about this massive change: At the center of the visually simplified interior of the upcoming model family is the circular central instrument display, a classic hallmark of MINI. However, in this new model, the circular central instrument display will be reinterpreted as an OLED display, making MINI the first car manufacturer in the world to offer a touch display with a fully usable round surface. This innovative design enables a minimalistic user interface that controls the integrated infotainment and climate functions, providing a sleek and frameless look that exudes high quality. That phrase minimalistic user interface is exactly what we see here. But how does it work? While these photos only show us a radio listing interface, they give away many aspects of the layout and interaction. For starters the white line at the bottom of the screen is intended to mimic the latest versions of iOS which allow the user to simply swipe up to go back to the Home Screen. We believe this will allow for quicker navigation that feels much more intuitive than most in-car interfaces. Beyond the massive screen there’s a lot to take in here. The switches and knobs (which are actually marked) are also identical to what we saw in the electric hatch leak meaning that MINI is moving to a consistent user experience across all models no matter where they’re produced or what platform they’re on. The automatic transmission gear lever is now going to be on the dash and next to it the return of a twist to start rather than a button. From there MINI will have its “experiences” toggle (more to come on that) and volume knob. That black rectangle in the center of the grill will house sensors and cameras required for MINI’s new autonomous driving features. The F66 MINI Cooper Autonomous Features Right away we can clearly see a camera and sensor module integrated into the top of the grille allowing this next generation of F56 MINIs to make use of L1 and perhaps even L2 autonomy features seen on some BMWs. Currently MINI has only one vaguely autonomous feature – adaptive cruise. While helpful it really does one thing – follow the car in front. MINI’s aim is to introduce this technology as an option meant primarily for highway purposes and likely only on automatic equipped MINIs. But perhaps the most pressing reason for MINI to upgrade the Cooper’s camera system is newly introduced EU safety legislation that goes into affect in 2024. More specifically MINI needs to comply with the intelligent speed assistance (ISA) requirement that has the ability to limit cars speed in urban environments. Yes you read that right. The Aceman concept gives us a clue of what to expect for MINI’s new in-vehicle digital experience.F66 MINI Cooper Colors Indigo Sunset BlueBlazing BlueOcean Wave GreenSunny Side YellowIcy Sunshine BlueChilli Red IIBritish Racing GreenMidnight BlackFor the F66 internal combustion (ICE) MINI Cooper, it looks like MINI is making some big changes. MINI is going heavy on the blurs while adding a pop of color with Sunny Side Yellow. Not listed here is Nanuq White which hasn’t been confirmed but is expected in the range as well. We also expect classic colors like Chili Red, Midnight Black, Nanuq White and British Racing Green to still be present but neither have been completely confirmed. 2024 MINI Cooper Wheels The wheels we’ll see in the F66 appear to be very similar if not identical to those on the J01 electric MINI Cooper. Like in the F56 they will range from 16″ to 18″ in diameter. We also expect classic colors like Chili Red and British Racing Green to still be present but neither have been completely confirmed. We’d expect that these colors would also carryover to the four door F65 and F67 Convertible when they are release later in 2024 and 2025. F66 MINI Cooper Digital Personalization Also driving this is MINI’s big bet on digital personalization. MINI is going all in on digital personalization with the next generation MINI Cooper, Countryman and Aceman. We’ve talked about the general concept but we now have some details as to exactly how this will come to life in both aesthetics and performance. Yes these personalized modifications have the ability to alter the way the car actually drives. Drive modes have been around since the R56 and will continue with the new generation of MINIs. However on the electric J01 MINI Cooper, The U25 electric MINI Countryman and the J01 MINI Aceman we’ll see a dramatic increase in functionality. Called experiences, they will control not just the way the car drives but the overall mood. We do not have confirmation we’ll see this in the F66 but it would make sense given the features that it will be borrowing from the J01. Will the Manual Transmission Be Available in the F66 MINI Cooper? The short answer is – we don’t know. Recently we reported that Head of MINI Stefanie Wurst commented the brand was “99% sure” they wouldn’t offer manual options on future products. To go along with this announcement MINI’s latest limited edition JCW 1to6 is being quietly billed as the last MINI ever to offer a manual transmission. We also know that when the next generation F66 MINI (the last ICE MINI ever) begins production in March, it will not offer a manual. But knowing MINI (and especially MINI USA) like we do we would guess that we will see it back in some limited form. Especially given that over 40% of all F56 JCWs are optioned with it. The F66 MINI Cooper Production Dates With the test mules progressing quickly, we believe we’ll see the refreshed F66 debut sometime in late 2023 or early 2024. We’d expect a tiered launch starting with the Cooper and Cooper S, followed by a JCW model. This will all happen in the shadow of the entirely new and all electric J01 MINI Cooper initially built in China and meant primarily for Asia, Europe and South America. Eventually we’ll see the J01 built in the UK and exported to the US.
