  1. MINI is Killing the Manual But There’s a Chance to Buy One before They’re Gone for Good. What was once unthinkable has finally happened. MINI has announced that the manual is ending production. Earlier this year we reported that MINI had made the decision to end manual production in when the F56 makes way for the refreshed F66 ICE MINI Cooper, Cooper S and JCW models. When is it happening and how can you still order one? We’ve got answers. Why Is MINI Killing the Manual? The Answer Will Surprise you. First let’s give you some context. It’s as shocking as it is inevitable. Shocking because of the manual’s continued popularity in markets like the US. Since the announcement on MotoringFile, manual take rates of the F56 JCW hardtop is at 52%. Clearly on some models (and with some buyers) it’s a very popular choice. It’s also a huge part of the brand’s history and slots well into the MINI’s core philosophy of creating cars that are engaging the drive. Why would MINI eliminate manuals despite the fact that the F66 (the replacement of for the F56) is mechanically identical and could theoretically carry over the current Getrag 6 speed? It’s about simplifying drivetrains components, cutting costs within manufacturing and for Europe (where CO2 targets are much more stringent) making MINIs pollute less. Well sort of. The manual isn’t necessarily dirtier than the auto. However the way cars are tested for CO2 emissions makes the manual particularly vulnerable. Automakers can tightly control C02 emissions with an auto because there’s so much control to be had with software. The very nature of a manual is that the driver has control and thus there are more variables at play during testing – almost a limitless number. Some of those variables produce higher C02 emissions in testing – despite the fact that a manual is often not any more dirty than an automatic MINI. This is forcing European automakers hands and causing many to eliminate the option. However in markets like US, where CO2 targets don’t have the same impact, why not continue to offer it? That’s likely down to the business case. Offering it one country means that the volumes go down dramatically which means MINI is spending more per unit and MINI would lose a chance to simplify the production process just has it’s about to get more complex with new models. But more than that the amount of time and money that would be spent to test, validate and federalize a manual option for one market simply doesn’t make sense at the prices that MINIs are sold for. How You Can Still Buy a MINI Manual Transmission MINI The MINI 1to6 Edition is billed last the last manual transmission MINI for several markets. But the reality is that many markets globally will retain the ability to order a manual on the F55, F56 and F57 until production end in February of 2024. That gives manual fans a chance to specify and order the exact manual transmission MINI they want. If you considering ordering a manual MINI, here’s how to get one. Don’t wait until the last minute. There’s already a high demand and that will likely get higher. If you have a good relationship with a MINI dealer, you can typically order a month out of next month’s production. But in this case we’d strongly recommend ordering your car in late December or early January at the latest. Verifying you have a production slot with your sales representative is critical as once it’s gone, you’ll have no recourse. If the 1to6 Edition is to your liking then you should get on with ordering one right now. In many markets globally they’re sold out and others (like the US) the supply seems to dwindling. Oh and if you’re curious, here’s what we would order. The post How to Get One of the Last Manual Transmission MINI Coopers first appeared on MotoringFile. 2. After a number of ups and downs over the last weekend of races, Clay Williams scored enough points to secure the coveted Driver’s Championship in the fiercely competitive Touring Car (TC) class of the 2023 SRO TC America series. This milestone victory marked the first Driver’s Championship for the 21-year-old from Oakley, California. The MINI JCW Team, run by LAP Motorsports, headquartered in Brownsburg, Ind., was also honored with the title of Crew of the Year by the series’ esteemed cadre of participants and competitors. Williams amassed an impressive tally of five first-place finishes, five second-place finishes, and one third-place finish, contributing to 11 out of the team’s remarkable 21 podium appearances across this season in both the TC and Touring Car A (TCA) classes. Williams left an indelible mark by achieving an impressive four consecutive victories, securing the 1st in four consecutive races. The MINI JCW Team, under the leadership of Luis Perocarpi and Rob Ridgely at LAP Motorsports, was also awarded Crew of the Year by the series’ distinguished participants and competitors. This remarkable recognition from their fellow competitors is a testament to their outstanding performance, made even more extraordinary by the fact that the team operates with just three full-time crew members. Throughout the season, these dedicated crew members received invaluable support from over 20 skilled MINI dealer technicians, who worked hand-in-hand with the team during practice, qualifying, and race days as part of the MINI Technician Race Crew Program. Their contributions ranged from intricate engine replacements to bodywork, all executed right in the paddock, amidst the hustle and bustle of on-track sessions. SRO America Indy 8 Hour 2023I am simply overwhelmed by the pride I feel for this exceptional team, following yet another immensely successful season. Our consistent performance, unparalleled in the paddock, stands as a testament to Clay’s flawless driving and the exceptional caliber of our crew, as recognized by our fellow competitors. Luis Perocarpi, team owner at LAP MotorsportsClay Williams was not the lone star on the MINI JCW Team to grace the podium this season. Williams’ close friend and teammate, 20-year-old Cristian Perocarpi, achieved an impressive seven podium finishes in the #37 MINI JCW PRO, including a noteworthy second-place finish at both Circuit of the Americas and Road America. Team veteran P.J. Groenke also made his mark, clinching three podium finishes in the #62 MINI JCW in the TCA class. His remarkable journey included his maiden career win at Virginia International Raceway and third-place finishes at NOLA Motorsports Park and Road America. To make the season even more memorable, Williams, Perocarpi, and Groenke were joined by a stellar cast of drivers, including Bruce Myrehn, Landon Lewis, and MINI Canada’s Alain Lauziere, who all competed fiercely in the TCA class. The MINI JCW Race Team concluded the SRO TC America Series as the runner-up in both the Manufacturer’s Championship and Team Championship, just missing out on a triple crown of championships for 2023. 3. Our MINI Countryman Cooper S Untamed edition has left the building. It’s been our daily driver for the past 12 months and has been the epitome of a loyal friend. But how does it compare with what else is out there from the brand and the forthcoming U25 Countryman? We took to the streets of Chicago for a one-take video review to tell you exactly what I’ve been thinking over the past 14,000 miles. Let’s get past the very “on the nose” name Untamed for a moment and talk about this Countryman. This might be the best looking MINI Countryman we’ve ever seen that doesn’t have the JCW letters on it. Starting with an all-new color, Momentum Grey, MINI has crafted a unique, aggressive, yet sophisticated look. Color-coded logos, unique side graphics, wheels and side scuttles all add details that make this car special. Inside it’s all about those gorgeous lounge leather seats which are finished in Highland Green lounge leather and a new textile that almost looks like wool. Add to this unique trim and you have an interior that might just be the star of the show here. But how does it drive and what is it like to live with for 12 months? And just how reliable are these new MINIs? Find out in the video above. The post Video Review: 2023 MINI Countryman Untamed: the Good, The Weird & The Surprises first appeared on MotoringFile. 4. MINI is following BMW’s lead and will be offering larger, more aggressive JCW brakes on most MINI models starting next year. What are the differences and which models will get the option? We have exclusive information from sources that answers these questions and gives us insight into what other JCW options we’ll see across the range. Over the last several years BMW M has seen huge successes from offering various M derived options in non-M cars. That model will be mirrored by MINI and their re-branded performance arm JCW starting with the 4th generation MINI family. We’ll see things like JCW body-kits, seats, steering wheel and brakes offered as factory options on the EV J01 MINI Cooper EV, EV/ICE U25 Countryman and the ICE F66 MINI Cooper family. The current generation after sales version of the JCW brakes. We expect this new generation to be a similar four piston set-up in the front.JCW Brakes – Technical Specs The current JCW after sales brake kit for the F56 is made up of a 4-piston fixed caliper in chili red with John Cooper Works branding and an internally ventilated, drilled brake disk up front (335x30mm). In the back (where there’s less weight to worry about) MINI has a single piston floating caliper in chili red and a disk that’s 259x10mm. The size will increase and likely be very similar to the massive brakes offered on the current JCW Countryman and Clubman. Rear sizing might also increase slightly on the EV models as the weight distribution will likely be closer to 50/50. Perhaps just as importantly they will feature more aggressive pads which help the car have a more firm bite and less fade on track. On the current range of JCW products, the brakes create a much more controlled experience on the track or in spirited driving. In fact the brakes on the current Clubman and Countryman (and GP) are substantially larger than stock and drastically change the experience in even day to day driving. The option will be internally known as 3C1 and will require JCW wheels to accommodate the larger calipers. JCW wheels and brakes can be seen on the text mule.F66 MINI Cooper – JCW Wheels, Seats and Other Options While we expect these options on the J01 MINI Cooper EV and the U25 Countryman, we have more details on the ICE powered F66 MINI family. The JCW brakes will also be offered next to JCW seats (option 4FN) JCW trim (7KQ) and a JCW steering wheel (2XK). JCW will also offer several wheels and tire package that will be branded JCW as well. Here’s the full list of all JCW options we should see at launch: CodeName1KL17” John Cooper Works Sprint Spoke black1KP18” John Cooper Works Lap Spoke 2-tone1KQ18″ John Cooper Works lap spoke 2-tone with sport tires2XKJohn Cooper Works sport steering wheel4FNJohn Cooper Works sport seats7KQJohn Cooper Works TrimExclusive: 2025 MINI Cooper and Countryman Production & Release Dates There will still be a lot to choose from across the internal combustion range from MINI – as long as you like 2.0 liter engines. Most models will receive a notable power increase with the exception of the Euro Countryman JCW and the F66 JCW. 5. Single pipe. One pack. Solo stove. Whatever you want to call it MINI is doing something very different with the exhaust of the MINI Cooper S and JCW models for last generation of internal combustion cars. The move has been seen on testing prototypes and now our sources are confirming the design change. The car pictured above and below is a F67 JCW convertible however we’ve seen the single exhaust on both the F66 Cooper S and JCW test mules over the last year. At first it was rather crude and appeared to be temporary. However as the test mules have progressed, we’ve seen clear signs production intend design elements. In the exclusive image below you can clear see the single exhaust pipe and even some final production trim. Note the stainless steel sleeve on the outside, the transversely mounted exhaust and even the aluminum shield underneath it. Look even closer and you’ll see the production version of the single LED reverse light just above the exhaust tip which (one could imagine) would look somewhat integrated with the cutout of the pipe. In this exclusive zoomed in photo you can see a central exhaust and single pipe that looks to be in nearly final production form. The current F56 Cooper S Exhaust design shows that the “dual exhaust” is nothing more than two small pipes from a single exhaust. Why a single exhaust pipe? Let’s start with the exhaust itself. One thing that most don’t know is that the MINI Cooper S and JCW have had a single muffler system since the R56. The fact that two outlets came out the back has primarily been for aesthetics. In fact there have been more than a few MINI race cars over there years that have gone with the exhaust single pipe design. Why? When asked they consistently say it’s both more power efficient and lighter. So in other exactly what you want in both race cars and modern performance cars. Why wouldn’t MINI have always had a single exhaust? It comes down to marketing and the very simple concept that two exhaust pipes means more power than one in the eyes of the car buying public. In fact you’ll see this on display later this year when the quad-exhaust JCW Countryman debuts. Bulldog Racing’s 2022 24 Hours of Nurburgring race car was one of many racing MINIs that had a single pipe. With MINI aggressively moving into electrification we also wonder if downplaying the exhaust in the smaller MINIs is almost a purposeful design decision as well? It would actually have some historical precedent as European automakers actually hid exhaust outlets on many of its V8 models in the late 90s and early 00s due to concerns of looking too aggressive. The larger, most luxurious Audis, Mercedes and BMWs all did this at one point or another. This hidden exhaust is something we’ve also seen on recent F66 MINI Cooper prototypes as well. The MINI JCW Team and its single exhaust at Road AmericaSingle or not, the next generation F66 MINI Cooper is coming very soon. Heavily based on the F56, the F66 generation will see the same engines (albeit only 2.0L four cylinders) and most of the same mechanical. However there will be a move to restyle the car closer to the J01 electric MINI Cooper and add that cars radically new circular display and interior layout. As you can see with our exclusive look below, MINI will continue to offer a wide variety of ICE models alongside it’s all new J01 electric MINI Cooper and U25 electric (and ICE) Countryman. Most models will receive a notable power increase with the exception of the Euro Countryman JCW and the F66 JCW. 6. MINI USA and the MINI John Cooper Works Team are gearing up for the last race weekend of the 2023 SRO TC America season at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. They’ve got a shot at snagging championships in all three categories – Driver, Manufacturer’s, and Team Championships. This opportunity comes after a successful weekend at Sebring International Raceway, where the team scored three podium finishes in the final race weekend before the championship showdown. SRO America Road America 2023Clay Williams will be behind the wheel of the #60 MINI JCW PRO, and he could clinch this season’s Driver Championship by simply finishing better than P4 in each of the races this weekend. Williams’ teammate Cristian Perocarpi will be handling the #37 MINI JCW PRO, with his sights set on outpacing Jeff Ricca in the #78 Genracer/Ricca Autosport Hyundai Elantra N in both races. Winning these races will not only help MINI USA secure the Manufacturer’s Championship but also bag the Team Championship for the MINI JCW Race Team and LAP Motorsports. Williams can also lend a hand in securing these two championship titles by beating Ricca in both races. Adding to the excitement, P.J. Groenke will join Williams and Perocarpi this weekend driving the #62 MINI JCW, alongside Bruce Myrehn in the #63 MINI JCW, both in the Touring Car A (TCA) class. Luis Perocarpi, the team owner at LAP Motorsports, chimed in, “Our team has been giving it their all this season, racing hard every weekend, and now we’re poised to sweep the championship categories at our home track and bring home some championship hardware. It’s going to be a nail-biter, and our team is all set to give it their best until the checkered flag drops.” SRO America COTA 2023LAP Motorsports, based in Brownsburg, Ind., which runs the MINI JCW Team, will have some extra muscle this weekend with three skilled MINI Dealer technicians joining the crew. They’ll be lending a hand during practice, qualifying, and race days as part of the MINI Technician Race Crew Program. These technicians hail from dealers across the U.S., including Century MINI and MINI of Buffalo. Their expertise is crucial as they bring their day-to-day MINI know-how to the track. Last season, the team finished as the runner-up for the Manufacturer’s Championship in both the Touring Car (TC) and Touring Car A (TCA) classes. Clay Williams, the driver of the #60 MINI JCW Pro, also secured a 2nd place finish in the 2022 Driver’s Championship in the TC class. 7. The 2025 MINI Cooper S is getting more power and in the process encroaching on the range topping MINI Cooper JCW. Despite MINI carrying over the 2.0 B48 four cylinder, the engine has been revised to produce more power which will likely produce near JCW levels of performance. While MINI is substantially upping the power in its all electric J01 MINI Cooper range, the ICE models will also get power upgrades. Starting with the Cooper, MINI will substantially upgrade the power from 134hp to 155hp. However it’s the Cooper S that might be the sweet spot. The 2025 MINI Cooper S will have an even 200hp coupled exclusively to MINI’s revised dual clutch transmission. With a likely increase in torque, this will move the Cooper S closer to the (unchanged) 231 hp from the JCW. Interestingly MINI is upping the power in the Countryman S to 214hp with the same B48 four cylinder. It would seem that a simple difference in programming could push the new 2025 MINI Cooper S even further upwards with that 214hp tune. The Manual Is Dead Pour one out for the manual transmission as MINI has killed one of our favorite options. In its place MINI will be offering a revised version of the familiar seven-speed dual clutch transmission across all MINI Cooper models. The revised dual clutch transmission is just like the one offered in current Cooper and Cooper S models combining two partial transmissions in a single housing to create smooth and quick shifts. Also gone is the traditional gear selector we’ve become used to. MINI is moving all controls for the F66 (like all of its new models) too the dash just below the the large OLED screen. Exclusive: 2025 MINI Cooper and Countryman Production & Release Dates And as you can see below in our exclusive look at the next generation MINI Cooper models, there will still be a lot to choose from across the internal combustion range from MINI – as long as you like 2.0 liter engines. 8. MINI USA sales are continuing their big increase in sales for 2023. The brand saw a 10.1% increase in sales in Q3 of 2023. That equates to 7,900 cars sold compared to 7,198 cars sold in Q3 of 2022. But looking at the entire year things are even more impressive. With products that are the better part of a decade old, you’d be right to assume MINI Sales in the US would be lagging as the market looks to what’s coming. Yet that’s not at all what we’re seeing. For 2023 MINI USA has thus far seen a 18.7% increase with 22,769 vehicles sold compared to 19,185. Leading the way was a massive increase in Countryman sales with a 71.8% increase in sales for the quarter. That’s help offset the 285 decrease in the two door hardtop and 10% drop in Clubman sales. 9. The costs of offering both an all new electric model range next to revised ICE models means MINI is having to make some compromises. Thanks to our sources we can now confirm one area of compromise is the number of engines available within the MINI line-up. More specifically the Cooper’s 3 cylinder petrol powered engine is being killed in an effort to simplify the line-up and reduce costs. This doesn’t mean there won’t be a standard Cooper. What it means is that MINI will only offer the 2.0L B48 engine in all of its petrol powered models moving forward. This will allow for greater economies of scale as it readies the B48 to become Euro 7 compliant for 2025. More Power for the Cooper The good news is that this will mean more power. The 134 hp F56 Cooper will be heavily revised (as the F66) for 2024 and will get 155 hp. Torque figures are unknown at this time but expect that to rise as well. The downside will likely be more weight as the 1.5 liter 3 cylinder enjoyed a small but important weight advantage over the 2.0 liter 4 cylinder MINIs. Exclusive: 2025 MINI Cooper Convertible Production & Release Dates And as you can see below in our exclusive look at the next generation MINI Cooper models, there will still be a lot to choose from across the internal combustion range from MINI – as long as you like 2.0 liter engines. Most models will receive a notable power on the Cooper S but should remain the same as the F56 generation on the Cooper and JCW – at least for launch. 10. We have a first look at the new internal combustion (ICE) 2025 MINI Cooper Convertible and things are already looking very familiar. Code-named the F67, the new MINI Cooper Convertible will feature a raft of design and technology changes to bring it closer to the J01 electric MINI Cooper that debuted earlier this month. With one or two important exceptions. First off let’s set some context. There will be no electric MINI Cooper Convertible in this next generation. While MINI is going big on electric cars, it’s focused solely on three models for the time being, the J01 Cooper, J05 Paceman and the U25 Countryman. On the internal combustion side of things, the brand will be heavily revising the F56 platform (including the F57 Convertible and F55 five door) with the styling and tech from the J01. Crucially it will leverage a revised drivetrain of the F56 designed to meet Euro7 emission regulations. This is great news (as long as you don’t want a manual) for those who aren’t ready for electric cars. This means the F56 will be heavily revised as the F66 and (you guessed it) the F57 convertible will become the F67. What does heavily revised really mean? MINI will be refreshing the exterior design to better match the recently debuted J01 electric MINI Cooper. That means we’ll see revised lights front and rear and even a fractionally shortened front overhang on the F66. The F67 Will Retain the Current Vertical Taillights The big exemption of all of this change are the taillights. As we’ve recently reported (and these first images confirm), the F67 will retain the vertical rear taillights of the current F57 convertible. For those who dislike the new triangular taillights this will be a sigh of relief. Why? According to sources the answer is fairly simple. MINI wasn’t able to fit the mechanical of the new lights in the rear tailgate of the existing tailgate of the convertible. Remember this isn’t an all new car but instead a heavily refreshed version of the F57 and thus wasn’t designed to accommodate the new all LED lights. What These Photos Show Us There will be no changes to the top mechanism or design. However there are plenty of other design changes. Outside of the rear taillights, the key theme appears to be creating design consistency with the future of the brand – the all electric J01 MINI Cooper. The goal is clearly to unify the design language across all models allowing consumers to have a choice that feels strictly about the drivetrain and nothing else. Looking beyond the camouflage, we can clearly tell this is a JCW Convertible due to the red brake calipers and the open air ducts on both sides of the front bumper. We also see that the F67 (and other ICE) will share wheels with the electric J01 MINI Cooper. We can also see the distinct shape of MINI’s new circular OLED display through the windshield. Yes the revised F66, F67 and F65 will get the new infotainment system along with a full interior refresh aligning much (but not all) the interior to the J01 electric MINI Cooper. A Single Pipe Exhaust? We’ve now seen a single exhaust pipe on both recent JCW prototypes. Could we see this actually come to market? We’re beginning to think so given a couple clues. For one we’ve seen this across multiple prototypes which typically a sign of production intent. Second the rear bumper outline around the exhaust looks final – despite the camo. The neatly integrated reverse light is a good example of why this looks final. Typically isn’t something typically done just for a prototype. Finally we wonder if MINI is making a point in moving from a double to single exhaust to visually minimize the emissions output from the car itself. To that point we’ve seen Cooper prototypes that have completely hidden exhausts. F67 2025 MINI Cooper Convertible Won’t Get a Manual Transmission For those reading MotoringFile this likely won’t be a total surprise as MINI had signaled they were done with the manual when the last F56 is built in March 2024. That’s now been confirmed by MINI – the manual is dead as of February 2024 production. In its place will be a revised 7 speed dual clutch (DCT) with JCW specific software for more aggressive programing which should decrease shift times. The revised dual clutch transmission is just like the one offered in current Cooper and Cooper S models combining two partial transmissions in a single housing. The core element of the system consists of two oil-cooled wet clutches: one of these is responsible for the even transmission ratios (2, 4, 6) while the other is for the uneven ratios (1, 3, 5, 7) and reverse. During travel, one of the two clutches is open and the other is closed. They interact when the driver shifts up or down: opening one clutch activates closure of the second at the same time. Exclusive: 2025 MINI Cooper Convertible Production & Release Dates And as you can see below in our exclusive look at the next generation MINI Cooper models, there will still be a lot to choose from across the internal combustion range from MINI. Engines will receive a notable power on the Cooper S but should remain the same as the F56 generation on the Cooper and JCW – at least for launch. 12. David Brown Automotive has a history of producing incredible quality resto-mod classic Minis in the style of the mythical Singer Porsches. But what we have here is something truly incredible. Today the brand is announcing that it’s getting into the EV business with the all electric Classic Mini eMastered. We’ve showed you and even review electric Classic Minis before – even the official kit from Mini, but we’ve never seen anything quite like this. David Brown Automotive has reimagined the classic Mini as a full EV with every detail rethought and re-engineered. Classic Mini eMastered Performance The Classic Mini eMastered has been engineered to be primarily an urban vehicle and thus has a range of over 110 miles from its 18.8kWh battery. The feather-light 640kg Mini eMastered – the same weight as an original ICE car – has a compact, power dense Zonic 70 motor emitting 72kW (97hp) and 175Nm of instantly accessible torque. Mini eMastered does 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds and runs on to an (electronically limited) top speed of 92mph when in sports mode. Thanks to its light weight and powertrain efficiency, Mini eMastered delivers a WLTP certified range of 110 miles from its small 18.8kWh battery. Capable of up to 6.6kW AC charging via a charging port housed in the same location as the original fuel filler outlet, the battery can be replenished in just 3 hours* using a typical home wall box charging point or a dedicated electric charging point (*charge point dependent). Personnalisation The charm of the classic Mini is all here but reimagined with meticulously design detail. David Brown Automotive retains its iconic silhouette while enhancing ever touchpoint. Every Classic Mini eMastered takes its cues from a donor body, which is hand crafted in classic coach-building methods. Built entirely in Silverstone, England, the car’s design is only limited to the imagination of its owner. As with the standard ICE car, this new EV embraces new technologies for such as integrated infotainment system, featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Look for the very first example of this David Brown Automotive offering to debut later this fall. classic electric mini – Photo Gallery The post Debut: All-Electric Classic Mini eMastered by David Brown Automotive first appeared on MotoringFile. 13. We’ve been driving out 2023 MINI Countryman a lot lately which has given us some time to ponder the biggest change MINI is making with the new model; the size. Having been hands-on with the new 2025 MINI Countryman and living with the current model, we have some thoughts on just how big of a difference this will be and perhaps why the F60 might just be the sweet spot for many. When the original Countryman debuted in 2011 it was seen as massive in the MINI world. Yet today it’s almost impossibly small for a four door crossover. It works for a small family but add a dog, some luggage and a multi-day trip and things get very very cramped. The F60 Countryman debuted in 2017 and looked massive in comparison. It get 8″ in length and offered much more legroom (especially in the rear) and a huge increase in luggage space. While it didn’t have the sharp turn-in of the lighter R60, in JCW spec it was plenty fast and felt on its toes in corners in a way that most crossovers can only dream of. R60 Countryman (’10-’16) F60 Countryman (’17-’23)U25 Countryman (’24-’32)Length4097 mm / 161.3 in4298 mm / 169.2 in4429 mm / 174.37 inHeight1562 mm / 61.5 in1557 mm / 61.3 in1613 mm / 63.5 inWheelbase2596 mm / 102.2 in2670 mm / 105.1 in2670 mm / 105.11 inNow that we’ve been hands-on with the al new (U25) 2025 MINI Countryman we’ve got some initial thoughts. While we haven’t driven it yet (that should happen early next year), we have sat in every seat, opened every door and thoroughly investigated the larger boot. What we’ve found is a car that is more spacious all around. There’s a touch more legroom, elbow room and noticeably more luggage space in the back. But the thing most people miss (as they say that’s not a MINI) is that this is much less of a change in size than the 2017 F60 was to the 2010 R60. As much as we like the changes MINI has made in the new 2025 Countryman (the digital experience and material quality immediately come to mind) we worry about what the increase in size will do to the curb weight and ultimately how it drives. Yes we know that BMW engineers have a very successful history of hiding a car’s weight through clever engineering and suspension design and calibration. But mass is still mass and at the limit we assume the U25 will feel touch larger and (ultimately) less MINI. We don’t have weight figures yet so we could still be surprised. BMW has does a great job keeping weight down on the new X1 which is a twin of the new Countryman so there is still hope. We’ve heard through sources that MINI has leveraged the updated FAAR platform’s use of advanced chassis design and new aluminum components to reduce the weight gain you might expect . We can get an idea of weight by looking at the new BMW X1 which has a 3,750 lbs curb weight. That’s only up 24 lbs over the previous generation despite being marginally larger and being offered with more standard equipment. Given this it would be reasonable to expect the next generation Countryman All4 won’t be far off the current car’s 3,726 lbs curb weight (assuming equipment levels are similar). That’s still a lot of weight for a MINI and extra pound counts. But perhaps MINI has followed BMW’s lead and engineered the new Countryman in a way that hides that weight and produces an F60 like driving experience? We’ll know the answer early next year when we get behind the wheel. Until then what do you think? Has the Countryman grown to the right size or is the F60 (or R60) your ideal MINI crossover? 15. What does the base Countryman look like and what does “E” and “C” even mean? MINI has released plenty of images and data on the new Countryman but almost all of us has been focused on the higher-end electric Countryman SE. But what about the base models? We’ve got some of the first photos and a few exclusive details on what will surely be some of the most popular MINIs in the years ahead. The U25 MINI Countryman Range Explained. First let’s discuss the broader model range. The MINI Countryman is unique in the new MINI model range in allowing both electric and ICE to be offered. This has only been accomplished by designing the FAAR platform from the ground up to accommodate both in unique and very bespoke ways. If the upside it choice for the consumer, the downside is packaging trade-offs that limit the size of the battery pack amongst others things. It’s important to note that not all markets will receive these base models. While it’s not a surprise the US market will not be importing the Countryman D, we can exclusively report that MINI USA will also not be brining the base ICE model – the Countryman C. The Countryman E is likely not being imported at launch but might eventually see the US market. MINI Countryman E with the Classic TrimBase MINI Countryman E and Countryman C performance The electric Countryman E will have an output of 204 hp and 184 ft lbs of torque. Interestingly that more than even the previous ICE powered Countryman S. The Countryman C will have 167 HP with a 131 MPH top speed. What we don’t have are 0-30 times which we can assume will be quicker for the Countryman E given the immediacy of its torque. Where the F60 ICE powered Countryman All4 S could do 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) in 7.3 seconds, this new 313 hp MINI Countryman SE does the same in only 5.6 seconds. That’s nearly a staggering 2 second improvement. The ICE powered Countryman JCW has a similar HP power figure and quite a bit less torque. However with less weight to carry is can hit 62 mph in only 5.4 seconds. You can read more about the new ICE MINI Countryman JCW here. MINI Countryman E Range The MINI Countryman will not only be the most powerful ever but offer the more electric range than we’ve seen from the brand. The base MINI Countryman E will have a WLTP calculated range of 287 miles from its 64 kWh battery. U25 MINI Countryman E and C will be available in four different trims that effectively package a number of exterior and interior changes in easy to choose packages. However one important note, it’s unclear if MINI USA will leverage these trim specifications or create their own. Essential Trim The Essential Trim is standard and features trim in Vibrant Silver. Based on early information Essential will be available with a limited selection of brighter colors such as the new Indigo Sunset Blue. Certain functional parts on the inside and outside are highlighted with the new accent color Vibrant Silver – essentially a matte silver with a hint of champagne Classic Trim In the Classic Trim, MINI uses a modern 2D knitted textile in the interior of a production vehicle for the first time. On the dashboard and door handles, two-tone black knitted textile provides a contrast to the high-quality synthetic leather seat. Additionally Classic offers the option of Vibrant Silver for the roof matching the contrasting front grille. Favored Trim Favored Trim is the most expressive option, featuring a two-tone houndstooth pattern on the knitted-textile instrument panel. Available in two colors and with traditional accent stitching, the perforated Vescin sports seats complement in dark and light colors. The exterior with the front grille in Vibrant Silver can be combined with the all-new Spray-Tech roof which features a blending of three different colors. JCW Trim Similar to BMW’s M Sport trim, MINI will offer a JCW Trim even on non JCWs. The JCW Trim has a distinctive front and year design. The frame of the front grille and the logo in high-gloss black are unique to this trim. Additionally the JCW Trim will offer a Chili Red roof for the first time on a non-JCW car. Finally JCW bonnet stripes will be offered in Chili Red or black. Inside the JCW Trim offers the sportiest interpretation of the new materials. Combined with multi-colored knitted textile and black synthetic leather with red stitching, the JCW seat with sports seat geometry echoes the colors of the dashboard and door trim. Availability of the MINI Countryman C and Countryman E The base models of the Countryman will be available globally with some exceptions. The biggest exception will be the US market where we will not see either imported at launch. While that may eventually change, it would appear that MINI USA plans to start with higher-spec, more profitable models at launch. 16. The J01 2025 MINI Cooper Electric (2024 in some markets) is a watershed product for the brand. It introduces a new design language for the brand and is the first ground-up electric MINI. How does it look? Having been hands-on and gotten to know the car, we’ve grown to really like it. But for many of you, feelings are still mixed. So we wanted to empty our folders of photos for you to give you the best look at the new 2025 MINI Cooper Electric possible. Over the last few months we have accumulated an enormous amount of photos, some of which have not been seen widely. For instance the following nine photos are a few from MINI that are not from a studio but taken in the wild. What they show is shadow and depth that’s more real-world than what we’ve seen in the first official press photos. One of the things you notice right away is just how saturated the new Blazing Blue color is. At first glance the Blazing Blue MINI Cooper SE looked evolutionary until the proportions start to register and you notice the details. Once you give it a few seconds you begin to notice the stark simplicity of the front. Gone are the faux vents, scoops and creases. In fact there’s really not a single design element that doesn’t have purpose functionally. That in itself is a massive departure from most modern MINIs save the original R50. With the J01 we have something that feels honed and evolved with a less is more philosophy. You’ll also notice how sculpted the side of the new J01 is. This is a big change from MINI and the first time we’ve seen anything like it on the Cooper. This next collection taken in London are the first real-world shots we’ve seen from MINI not heavily retouched. These shots give you a great look at how the J01’s sculpted sides look in daylight with real shadows. I’m sure it’s controversial but to us its photos like this that make the rear taillights make more sense. In person they feel proportional and seem to flow with the voluptuous rear fenders well. Now let’s take a look at some studio shots that we haven’t seen much of either. This set is in studio but uses various props to create a different shadow and depth than we typically see. What’s interesting about this set is how the Blazing Blue really changes character in different light. And like then previous set you can immediately see the sculpted sides and other curves that aren’t obvious at first. The overall design pays off what the Head of MINI Design Oliver Heimler has been hinting towards for years; minimalism and simplicity that is inspired by the original Mini. MINI’s name for this new approach is known internally as “Charismatic Simplicity.” with this new approach, there’s almost a stark minimalism compared to what we’ve seen over the last decade. Here’s a direct comparison to the F56 – the most recent MINI Cooper which we recently wrote about. There are many interesting and subtle changes between the two but the one that surprised us was the size. The new J01 electric MINI Cooper is 1 cm longer and 2 cm taller than the F56. But why does it appear to be smaller from some angles? With a clean-sheet to work with, MINI massaged the proportions of the J01 to better fit with the MINI design ethos. Key to that is the 3 cm longer wheelbase and larger wheels/tire set-up. The combination allows the overhangs to shrink and helps overall with the proportions of the car. We’ve got that too with a full look at how each generation has grown and evolved the MINI design DNA. Then there’s the sketches and design process itself. These are a great window into the process that the MINI Design team used to create the first ground-up electric MINI. It’s also a fascinating look at some of the processes and methods used to create a car from a clean sheet of paper. Finally let’s look at the initial launch gallery. This is that Blazing Blue Cooper SE with the favored trim we’ve all seen a lot recently. It’s an exhaustive look at the car inside and out with plenty of great detail shots. 17. Two weeks ago we got our first official look at the all new J01 electric MINI Cooper and in a sense the future of the MINI brand. However almost all of the photos thus far have been on a MINI Cooper SE in Blazing Blue and what MINI calls “Favoured” Trim (yes it’s a terrible name). What we haven’t seen is the new JCW Trim that adds a JCW appearance package to any MINI. Until today. First off we have to admit we’re not huge fans of JCW appearance packages with no substance. It’s all bark with no bite and it definitely could be argued it dilutes the JCW brand a bit. But to each their own. If you want pay for your base MINI Cooper E to look like a JCW, MINI will gladly take your money and make you happy. The MINI Cooper SE with the JCW TrimLooking at the car you can see there’s a distinctly more aggressive look thanks to the new aerokit. The front splitter literally is split with an interesting center separation that is certainly distinct. The side has some subtle horizontal lines that appear functionless which of course is a bit head scratching given how MINI has gone to great lengths to connect design elements to functional needs. However things get much better on the side with a subtle side skirt. Around back things get even more interesting with an aggressive looking diffuser and almost GP-like rear wing. Courtesy of Instagram user cochespiasWhat’s Comes on the MINI Cooper with JCW Trim? Similar to BMW’s M Sport trim, JCW Trim has a distinctive front and rear design that will echo the look of the full JCW. The frame of the front grille and the logo in high-gloss black are unique to this trim. Additionally the JCW Trim will offer a Chili Red roof for the first time on a non-JCW car. Finally JCW bonnet stripes will be offered in Chili Red or black. Inside, the JCW Trim offers multi-colored knitted textile and black synthetic leather with red stitching. The MINI Cooper E with the JCW TrimThe JCW Trim will be optional across the range and will not correspond with any performance improvements. However who do expect it to be very closely aligned in design to the forthcoming electric JCW which we should see for 2025. 18. The 2025 ICE F67 MINI Convertible is not getting the new, triangular lights that all other small MINIs will be getting in this next generation (starting in 2024). According to sources who have seen the car, MINI will be retaining the current shape of the taillights and offering it on the heavily refreshed F67 convertible as a one-off in the updated ICE MINI range. The F55 and F56 have enough space that the lighting system can be retrofitted without issues. Thus the updated F65 and F66 will have the exact same triangular rear lights that we see above on the all new J01 electric MINI. So the 2025 F67 MINI Convertible Isn’t Really New? MINI is going big on electric cars and has designed an all new electric MINI Cooper (J01) . Because it’s so costly to design and develop new cars they don’t have the capital to design and engineer an all new successor to the ICE (internal combustion engine) F56. So they’re heavily refreshing it with the styling and tech of the J01 with the drivetrain of the F56. This is great news (as long as you don’t want a manual) for those who aren’t ready for electric cars. The goal is clearly to unify the design language across all models allowing consumers to have a choice that feels strictly about the drivetrain and nothing else. And as you can see below in our exclusive look at the next generation MINI Cooper models, there will still be a lot to choose from. 19. As expected, today MINI announced it’s building the new all electric MINI Cooper in Oxford starting in 2026. The move will bring production of the car to the UK alongside a heavily refreshed ICE range of MINI Coopers that will form the swan-song for the band ICE offerings. When will the last ICE MINI roll-off the assembly line? Through sources we have uncovered the exact date. The last ICE MINI Cooper JCWBackground – The Last ICE MINI MINI just debuted two new all electric models in the last two weeks yet they aren’t letting go of internal combustion engines (ICE) yet. In 2024 MINI will heavily revising the F56 to create the dramatically refreshed F66. Why not an entirely new model? New cars are billions to develop and MINI can’t afford two all new Coopers. The big investment was made on the all electric version (the J01) which we now have confirmation will be made not just in China but the UK starting in 2026. But MINI still needs to serve markets where the charging infrastructure and size mean EVs aren’t a single solution yet. The answer is an unprecedented move; two next generation MINI Coopers built (initially) on opposite ends of the planet on two different platforms. As you can tell by its codename, the F66 is an evolution of the F56 which is shared a chassis with. However MINI is refreshing the exterior design to better match the all new J01 electric MINI Cooper. That means we’ll see revised lights front and rear and even a fractionally shortened front overhang. The key theme appears to be creating design consistency with the future of the brand – the all electric J01 MINI Cooper. The goal is clearly to unify the design language across all models allowing consumers to have a choice that feels strictly about the drivetrain and nothing else. There will be three body styles and three levels of performance. However one key options missing will be the manual transmission. The Exact Date of the Last ICE MINI Ever Now that you know MINI’s plans for its last ICE generation of cars, let’s dive into when production will end. In its release about the J01 electric MINI Cooper coming to the Oxford Plant, they mentioned only electric production would be happening there by 2030. But that’s a little misleading given what we know. The last ICE MINI Cooper is currently scheduled to roll off the assembly line in Oxford on December 31st 2030. This is the current plan that MINI has defined internally and for its large Tier 1 suppliers. So while that date may seem arbitrary, you can bet a lot of planning as already taken place to define that date. So of you’re already thinking about wanting one of the last petrol powered, ICE MINI Coopers, you’ll want to etch 12.31.30 into your memory now. But there is one more petrol powered MINI – in fact it was just was released. The German made U25 MINI Countryman debuted in electric form last week but will have a ICE version sold alongside of it as well. Its end of production date, perhaps unsurprisingly is identical; 12.31.30. If that holds true MINI’s switch to electric will be a rather dramatic event with the end of production for ICE models happening simultaneously in two different countries. 20. For those that read MotoringFile daily, this may seem like déjà. As we reported in March, MINI will be bringing production of its all new electric MINI Cooper (the J01) and MINI Aceman (J05) to the UK in 2026. This move not only brings production of the highly important new Cooper to its largest market but allows for easy import to countries with Chinese tariffs like the US. This morning BMW Group made the announcement official with a promise to invest over £600 million into the MINI factories located in Oxford and Swindon. With this the Oxford plant will be gearing up to produce two new all-electric MINI models starting in 2026, the MINI Cooper 3-door and the compact crossover MINI Aceman. By 2030, their production volume will be exclusively electric, and BMW Group will have invested more than £3 billion in their Swindon, Hams Hall, and Oxford plants since the year 2000. The UK Government has been supportive of this development, which will help secure jobs at the Oxford manufacturing plant and the body-pressing facility in Swindon. “With this new investment, we’re going to turn the Oxford plant into a place where the next generation of electric MINIs will be made. This sets us on the path to making only electric cars in the future.” Milan Nedeljkovi?, a Member of the Board of Management at BMW AG responsible for productionKemi Badenoch, the Business and Trade Secretary, expressed her support, saying, “This decision is a significant vote of confidence in the UK economy and in the efforts of our government to ensure the continued success of our world-leading automotive sector. We’re proud to support BMW Group’s investment, which will not only protect high-quality jobs but also strengthen our supply chains and boost economic growth in Britain.” Oxford remains the historic home of MINI, having celebrated its 110th anniversary this year. The plant has been successfully producing the current MINI Electric since 2019, seamlessly integrated into the production line alongside traditional (ICE) models. MINI’s journey toward full electrification gains momentum with an expanded model lineup and improvements to their production network. At present, the MINI Plant Oxford manufactures the MINI 3-door, MINI 5-door, MINI Clubman, and MINI Electric. Starting in 2024, the plant will begin production of the next generation MINI 3-door and MINI 5-door with traditional combustion engines, as well as the new MINI Convertible. These will be joined by the all-electric MINI Cooper 3-door and MINI Aceman in 2026. The factory is expected to reach a production capacity of around 200,000 cars annually in the medium term. Initially, both internal combustion engine and battery electric vehicles will be built on the same production line. However, by 2030, the Oxford Plant will exclusively produce all-electric MINI models. “MINI has always cherished its history, and Oxford will always be the heart of the brand. I’m thrilled that the two new, fully electric MINI models—the MINI Cooper and MINI Aceman—will also be made in Oxford. This confirms our commitment to an all-electric future.” Stefanie Wurst, Head of the MINI brandIn just a few weeks, production of the new MINI Countryman will commence at the BMW Group plant in Leipzig. This larger crossover model in the MINI lineup will be available with both pure electric drive and traditional combustion engines, providing consumers with a range of options. Additionally, production of the next-generation all-electric MINI Cooper 3-door and MINI Aceman will begin in China. This marks the establishment of a new manufacturing plant in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province, through a joint venture with Great Wall Motor. Exports are set to begin in early 2024, further advancing MINI’s global push towards electrification. BMW Group is setting the stage for a bright electric future, with Oxford as the epicenter of this transformation. The F66 MINI Cooper Production Dates With the test mules progressing quickly, we believe we’ll see the refreshed F66 debut sometime in late 2023 or early 2024. We’d expect a tiered launch starting with the Cooper and Cooper S, followed by a JCW model. This will all happen in the shadow of the entirely new and all electric J01 MINI Cooper initially built in China and meant primarily for Asia, Europe and South America. Eventually we’ll see the J01 built in the UK and exported to the US. While MINI hasn’t confirmed production timing, our sources have confirmed that the J01 will go into production this fall in China and will be sold in Europe, Asia and South America initially. The J01 MINI Cooper electric and U25 MINI Countryman will be followed by the internal combustion U25 Countryman which will be shown later this year. Then we’ll see the heavily revised F56 morph into the F66 internal combustion MINI Cooper, built in Oxford. This will be MINI’s answer to all those who want a Cooper but aren’t ready for electric. Finally in 2024 we’ll see the all electric MINI Aceman crossover which effectively takes the place of the beloved MINI Clubman. Built initially in China, the small crossover (roughly the size of the original MINI Countryman) will expand with Oxford production in 2026. 21. MINI Design had a huge task at hand when they set out to reinvent an icon like the MINI Cooper. In talking with the designers and engineers who created the car, process took the best of the old world and married it with new tech. BMW and MINI design is known for its use of clay models. Why clay? It’s an old-school way to design but it’s also a great way for designers to literally form their ideas in full-sized dimensionality. But clay also slows down the process. To help solve for that MINI Design used some of the latest digital tools and virtual reality to help speed up the process and get a better feel for ideas as they took shape. Never-mind the wheels – this is a sneak peek at the JCW bodykitWe have a collection of images that demonstrate this process. What they show is a fascinating glimpse into not just how MINI Design goes about creating cars but also a few sneak peaks at what’s coming. Case in point the photo above is a very early look at the forthcoming electric JCW (or at the very least a JCW bodykit. The details map directly to the JCW test mule we spotted recently in Munich. This photo shows a very early design prototype in a dark blue which we have yet to see in production photos. It’s a great color and looks fantastic with white mirrors pictured. It’s also interesting to see how the matte Vibrant Silver trim looks on a dark color. Here you can see what appears to be an early version of the Countryman headlights that has an indent on the lower side. It’s interesting to see how that correlated with some of the other design elements we see not the Countryman – specifically the front splitter. Have a look at the gallery below for more easter eggs and let us know what you find in the comments below. 22. Following their recent debut, the all-electric MINI Cooper and the brand-new electric MINI Countryman are set for their UK debut at Goodwood Revival 2023, happening from September 8th to 10th this year. The MINI Cooper Electric, unveiled at the IAA Mobility 2023 event in Munich, boasts a groundbreaking 24cm circular OLED screen, a digital-centric interior with fresh Experience Modes, and a choice of electric ranges – either 190 or 249 miles (WLTP rated). The new generation MINI Countryman will offer both electric and combustion powertrains for the first time ever. With an interior that mirrors the MINI Cooper’s simple, digital vibes, the MINI Countryman also introduces Level 2 semi-automated driving among other technology additions. But it’s not just getting smarter; it’s getting roomier, comfier, and more versatile due to a size increase and well. Both of these new models will be showcased inside Cooper’s, MINI’s retro-inspired hotspot with a modern twist, at the Earls Court Motor Show. And here’s the kicker: they’re rolling out giveaways to those who stop by. The showcase Cooper’s is all about an immersive experience. Every nook and cranny inside tells a distinctive MINI story. You’ll find cleverly branded items hinting at innovative new model features, like ‘Spike’s Kibble,’ giving a nod to MINI’s virtual dog assistant, knitwear that points to the fresh recycled polyester textile dashboard, and ‘Countryman Crunch’ cereal with adventure-themed packaging. And as you’d expect there’s plenty of classic Mini’s on display as well. The 2023 Goodwood Revival kicks off from September 8th to the 10th. 23. What was once almost certain has now become a certainty. Earlier this year we reported that MINI was likely to cease all manual production in when the F56 makes way for the refreshed F66 ICE MINI Cooper, Cooper S and JCW models. However we now unfortunately confirm that the manual will indeed be dead when F56 production ends. This week Head of MINI, Stephanie Wurst official told Top Gear that “We won’t have a manual unfortunately,” in response to the question about the manual continuing with the F66 MINIs. That means MINI will be offering only one transmission across all its cars moving forward – a 7 speed dual clutch transmission. Why Is MINI Killing the Manual? It’s as shocking as it feel inevitable. Shocking because of the manual’s continued popularity in markets like the US. Currently 44% of F56 JCW hardtops sold in the US are equipped with the manual transmission. Clearly on some models and with some buyers it’s a very popular choice. It’s also a huge part of the brand’s history and slots well into the MINI’s core philosophy of creating cars that are engaging the drive. Why would MINI eliminate manuals despite the fact that the F66 (the replacement of for the F56) is mechanically identical and could easily carry over the current Getrag 6 speed? It’s likely about simplifying drivetrains components and cutting costs within manufacturing. And for Europe (where CO2 targets are much more stringent) the manual is slightly dirtier. The Replacement – The Getrag 7 Speed DCT This Getrag 7 Speed DCT will be an evolution of the current one found in the F56 range. In our testing of the current DCT we’ve gotten to know it as a seamless shifting auto that’s slower to manually change gears than we’d want. We’ve been told through sources that MINI is improving some of that sluggish reaction through software on future versions. Last Manual Transmission Production Dates The MINI 1to6 Edition is billed last the last manual transmission MINI for several markets. But the reality is that many markets globally will retain the ability to order a manual on the F55, F56 and F57 until production end in March of 2024. That gives manual fans a chance to specify and order the exact manual transmission MINI they want. If you’re curious, here’s what we would order. If the 1to6 Edition is to your liking then you should get on with ordering one. In many markets globally they’re sold out and others (like the US) the supply seems to dwindling. We’ll have more on the death of the manual transmission and what it means for those of us who love them and the MINI brand itself. Until then join us in pouring one out for what we’d consider the single most important option on an ICE MINI Cooper. 24. Autocar recently caught up with the Head of MINI Stefanie Wurst on the topic of the MINI brand and its support for for motorsports. For those that don’t know MINI has been apart of several racing series since the brand’s relaunch in 2001 including the incredibly entertaining MINI Challenge spec series that has raced in Europe and Japan for years. But with there brand going electric, what could the future of MINI’s racing program be? Autocar put the question to Wurst at the Munich IAA Motorshow and got some insight into what’s potentially on the table; “We don’t have the big budgets so we have to be inventive. It’s about looking at which kind of platforms can we credibly participate in to emphasise the go-kart feeling and the electric future of the brand” She said. The most recent MINI Challenge Race CarIt’s a prudent response that shows that MINI is clearly looking at continuing Motorsports involvement but in new ways. She went on, “There are two options. Either we say the MINI Challenge is a format we have to expand to new markets in the future, or we participate in one of the new electric platforms. This is the choice we have to make. What kind of engagement is the right one for us? If it’s one that we own [MINI Challenge] then we would have to export it more: we have it in the UK and Japan, but big markets like China are lacking. I would like to have a more unified strategy.” The Bulldog Racing MINI JCW that recently races the 24 Hours of the NurburgringIt’s great point she makes and one that is even more obvious in North America, one of MINI’s largest markets. Outside of the successful JCW Racing Team (which MINI USA supports, there’s no large-scale MINI visibility in the motorsports. Owning a series like the MINI Challenge surely costs more but that does give brand an opportunity to both control the show and market it from holistically. What do you think? Should MINI continue to go racing as it transforms into an electric brand or should it stick with ICE race cars as long as it can? 25. The new J01 MINI Cooper is a massive step forward in many ways. But how does it compare to the previous generations? Is it an evolution or revolution? And more specifically does look better than the F56 – the previous generation MINI Cooper? Let’s take a close look. Note: This week MINI is launching its next generation with the new MINI Cooper Electric and MINI Countryman Electric. In anticipation of this release, MINI invited us to experience the new cars in Munich and talk to the people that created them. We’ve taken that knowledge and poured it into exclusive in-depth articles, reviews and videos you won’t want to miss. MINI Cooper EV: Premier | MINI Cooper EV: Hands-On Review | MINI Cooper EV: Video Review MINI Countryman EV: Premier | MINI Countryman EV: Hands-On Review | MINI Countryman EV: Video Review New MINI Family: 1st Look Video | MINI Circular Display & MINI OS9 Hands-On Review When the F56 was released it was panned by MINI faithful for its large mouth and huge overhang (compared to the previous generations). It went on to be the most successful new MINI ever and those views have generally softened. Which makes this comparison pretty interesting. The J01 clearly is similar to the F56 but as you look at the two closer you start to notice some distinct and important differences. It’s easy to see that the J01 is simpler and more minimal. But what you only get after repeated views is how many small but important differences there are. The higher belt-line makes the car look more aggressive and upright as does the taller but more taught hood. Also interesting are the lights. The J01 does away with the surrounding trim yet they somehow look smaller because of how simply they are in comparison. They also sit slightly higher on the car and thus feel more upright. Then there’s the clean sides which have real curve to them vs the very flat F56. The J01 introduced dimensionality we’ve never seen on a Cooper before. The result is a car that looks more athletic and aggressive. Around back things get pretty interesting. We’ve had the luxury of time with the J01 so the rear lights don’t look so shocking to us anymore. Maybe because of that we actually like the fact that they’re smaller and simpler than what those on the F56. We also prefer how angular they are compared to the F56’s which are a bit bulbous in comparison. But what do you think? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
