It’s how a 2.3-tonne electric SUV manages to stay flat through direction changes, respond to steering inputs with a precision usually reserved for cars several hundred kilos lighter, and deliver a brake pedal that feels consistent regardless of whether the car is using regeneration or friction braking underneath. That’s the part of the Heart of Joy story that matters most for what’s coming to the NB5 Countryman EV, and it’s easy to miss if you’re only looking at the spec sheet. The reason the iX3 drives the way it does comes down to how the car processes inputs, not just how much power it has on tap. The all new system architecture (what BMW call’s the “Heart of Joy”) consolidates drivetrain, steering, brakes and energy recuperation onto a single controller running roughly ten times faster than BMW’s previous architecture. In a conventional car, those functions live on a dozen or more separate controllers, each interpreting a driver’s input and making its own decision before passing information along to the next system. That works, but it’s sequential, and every handoff adds a fraction of a second of lag. The Heart of Joy collapses that into one continuous calculation, so when a driver turns the wheel, lifts off the throttle or touches the brake, the car isn’t juggling separate systems reacting to each other. It’s making one coordinated decision about what the car should do next. BMW M Performance Vision We got an early look at how hard this system is built to be pushed on our sister site BimmerFile, where we rode along in the BMW Vision Driving Experience, a test mule producing over 13,000 lb-ft of torque built specifically to abuse the Heart of Joy at a scale no customer will ever encounter. What stood out wasn’t the torque figure, it was how little drama the car made of managing it. That’s the same architecture now filtering down into a production SUV, and eventually into the Countryman. That’s why the reviews keep circling back to responsiveness rather than range. BMW claims the system handles roughly 98 percent of everyday stops through regeneration alone, but the more telling detail is that testers can’t feel the handoff between regeneration and friction braking, which is normally the giveaway that separates a good EV brake pedal from an average one. The same logic applies to cornering. Reviewers who came in expecting the usual heavy, numb EV SUV instead describe a chassis that changes direction with unusual immediacy, because steering, motor torque and braking are being calculated together rather than negotiated between systems that don’t fully know what the others are doing. A few have flagged ride quality inconsistencies on rougher pavement with larger wheel and tyre options, so the tuning clearly still varies by spec, but nobody is describing the underlying responsiveness as a gimmick. BMW iX3 This is the part MINI is inheriting for the NB5, and it matters more than the battery. The current Countryman SE is a competent electric MINI, but it’s built on FAAR, a platform designed to accommodate combustion drivetrains as much as electric ones, and its driving dynamics reflect that compromise. The NB5 moves to a rear-wheel-drive-biased chassis built from the ground up around Neue Klasse’s electric architecture, with the Heart of Joy managing how that chassis actually behaves in real time. For a brand whose entire identity rests on go-kart handling, a system that’s already demonstrating sharper cornering response and a more coherent brake pedal in a vehicle twice the Countryman’s likely footprint is a genuinely bigger deal than any range number. The range and charging gains are real too, and worth noting briefly: the iX3’s EPA rating of up to 434 miles and 400kW charging dwarf the current Countryman SE’s 212 miles and 130kW, and the i3 sedan is tracking similar territory. But those numbers are the easy part of the Neue Klasse story to sell, and they’ll keep improving regardless of which model they land on. What’s harder to engineer, and what’s actually showing up in how these cars drive, is a control system that makes a heavy EV feel immediate and predictable rather than just quick in a straight line. MINI has a full cycle of BMW refining that system across the iX3 and i3 before the NB5 arrives in 2032. If the early reviews are anything to go by, that’s the revolution worth paying attention to.
