They were, in fact, a handle with about the most intuitive interaction possible: you pull, the door opens. That changed in 2024, when MINI borrowed a BMW part and introduced a new, more aero-friendly design on the U25 Countryman, the J01 Cooper EV, and the J05 Aceman EV, and suddenly the simple act of opening a door became a little harder and a lot more annoying. The problem: to open the new design you have to slide your fingers under the flush panel and flip the handle up to release it. Unlike the previous dead-simple design, which let you unlatch the door and pull it open in one motion, the new design makes doing that same thing far harder. More often than not you end up bracing your free hand against the door frame just to get the leverage to actually open it, a two-hand job where previous MINIs needed one. It is a small thing that happens many times a day, which is exactly why it is worth getting right, and MINI is not getting it right. Of course, this isn’t the case for the entire lineup. The F66 Cooper, F65 five-door, and F67 convertible, all built on MINI’s older, UKL-based platform, still ship with the sensible, grab-and-pull design. Why the change? The flush handles on the U25, J01, and J05 shave a fraction of a percent off the drag coefficient, and in the world of EVs and increasingly stringent CO2 standards, MINI and BMW say they need all the help they can get. When Top Gear sat down with Holger Hampf, MINI’s design chief since taking over the role in 2024, and asked him about flush handles directly, he didn’t hedge. “My Mini answer would be proper door handles, for sure,” he said. “I hate kitchens without door handles. It’s also very fitting to Mini, because a function needs to be obvious. A door handle can be a piece you really love to touch.” While that was more pointed to the adoption of touch sensitive door handles seen on some EVs outside of the BMW Group, the same could be said about the current flush design. The aero case is thin Flush handles exist because they reduce drag, and drag matters more on an EV than a petrol car because every fraction of a percent shows up on the range sticker. That is a real, defensible reason for the J01 Cooper EV and the J05 Aceman EV to consider the tradeoff. Independent testing across the industry has generally put the benefit of flush over conventional handles at somewhere between 0.005 and 0.01 in Cd, worth roughly one to two percent of total drag and a handful of miles of range on a full charge. That is not nothing on a spreadsheet. It is also not the kind of number that should override how a driver interacts with the car twenty times a day. And it does not explain the Countryman at all. The U25 is a tall, boxy family SUV. Nobody is choosing between a Countryman and a competitor over a percent of drag coefficient, and MINI is not marketing it on efficiency the way it does the electric cars. Fitting flush handles here reads like a styling decision inherited from BMWs and applied for cost savings above all else. Ownership is where this falls apart MINI’s flush handles are mechanical, not the powered, motor-driven type that has landed Tesla in front of NHTSA rulemaking after complaints about handles failing in a crash or after a battery loses power. That distinction matters and MINI deserves credit for it. But mechanical does not mean effortless. There is no separate release and pull, it is the same handle doing both jobs: you flip it up with your fingers to break it out of the flush panel, and that same motion is then supposed to become the pull that swings the door open. Doing both at once with one hand is awkward enough that plenty of owners end up bracing their free hand against the door frame just to get the leverage a conventional handle would give them for free. Owners across MINI’s forums, on cars going back generations, already complain about handles that are stiff or need real effort to operate. Ask a flush handle to serve as both the release and the pull point and that problem gets worse, not better. Even MINI’s own philosophy argues against this The frustrating part is that flush handles fail MINI’s own design test. Hampf’s line about a function needing to be obvious is not a throwaway comment, it is a description of what has made MINI’s interiors and details feel considered rather than assembled. A round central display that still hasn’t been copied by a competitor works because it is confident and legible. A door handle that needs a learning curve for houseguests and valets is the opposite of that. It is a function pretending to be a design statement. To be fair to the current cars, the timing is awkward rather than damning. The U25, J01, and J05 were all locked in before Hampf’s appointment reshaped MINI’s design direction, and MINI has already confirmed an LCI refresh across the Cooper, Countryman, and Aceman that the brand itself has tied to customer feedback on the current generation. Door handles are exactly the kind of complaint that shows up in that feedback loop. Whether MINI is willing to spend tooling money mid-cycle to fix something this small is a fair question, and it is one worth asking loudly before the fifth generation locks in its own answer. MINI does not need to invent anything to fix this. The F66, F65, and F67 are proof, sitting on dealer lots right now, that a conventional handle still belongs on a modern MINI. Carry that same handle over to the U25, J01, and J05 at the LCI and the brand loses nothing in showroom coherence. It just stops asking half its own lineup to live with a compromise the other half never had to make. MINI spent decades building a reputation on details you could feel with your hands: toggle switches, a shift lever with actual heft, controls that told you what they did before you had to think about it. Flush handles trade a sliver of that for a sliver of drag coefficient. That’s a pretty bad trade in our eyes.
