MINI USA Sales Q3 2026: The Convertible Closes In on the Hardtop 2 Door

Recommended Posts

MINI USA closed the third quarter of 2026 with 6,531 sales, down 10.2% from 7,270 a year ago. Buried in that number is the most surprising result of the year: the Cooper Convertible sold 1,359 cars, up 29.8%, and sits just 134 sales behind the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door year to date. It has also overtaken the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door. The drag on the brand is the Countryman, which fell 28.1%.

Those figures come from BMW of North America’s Q3 2026 sales report, which gives MINI two sentences and a table. The table is where the story is.

The Convertible is closing in on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door

Year to date, the Cooper Convertible has sold 3,887 cars against 4,021 for the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door, and it has already passed the Cooper Hardtop 4 Door at 3,669. In Q3 alone the gap to the 2 Door was just 70 cars (1,359 against 1,429), and the Convertible beat the 4 Door by six.

A year ago, the Convertible trailed the 2 Door by 2,534 cars through the first nine months (2,756 against 5,290). It has closed nearly all of that.

A summer quarter flatters a drop-top, so the Q3 gain of 29.8% on its own would be easy to wave away. The year-to-date figure of +41.0% is harder to dismiss. That is nine months of growth, not a sunny-weather blip.

MINI’s release offers no explanation, so what follows is analysis, not reporting. Availability and pricing against the Hardtop are the questions worth putting to MINI retailers. What the numbers do show is that the Cooper Convertible now accounts for about a fifth of MINI USA’s volume, which is a lot of weight for a niche body style.

The Countryman problem

The Countryman fell from 3,323 to 2,390 in the quarter. That is 933 fewer sales, more than the entire brand’s decline of 739. Take the Countryman out and the rest of the lineup sold 4,141 cars against 3,947 a year ago, up 4.9%.

That cuts both ways. The Cooper range is not collapsing, but MINI USA leans heavily on one model. The Countryman is still 42.8% of year-to-date volume (8,670 of 20,248), so when it stumbles, the brand’s totals follow. One caveat: the sales chart does not split the Countryman by powertrain, so we cannot say whether the slide is gas, electric or both.

Hardtops: the 4 Door holds, the 2 Door fades

The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door, the car the Cooper name was built on, sold 1,429 in Q3, down 9.2%. Year to date it is down 24.0%, from 5,290 to 4,021. The 4 Door did better, up 2.0% in the quarter, though it is still 11.2% behind for the year.

Combine the two Hardtops and Q3 was down a modest 4.0% (2,782 against 2,899). Year to date they are down 18.4% (7,690 against 9,422). Do the subtraction and the first half was far worse, with Hardtop sales down roughly 25%. That is the closest thing to good news for the core Cooper Hardtop line: the bleeding has slowed. The Clubman, meanwhile, is a rounding error, with one sale all year.

The broader BMW context

BMW brand sales rose 3.4% to 100,210 cars in the same quarter. MINI’s share of BMW of North America’s total volume slipped from 7.0% to 6.1%. One rough piece of arithmetic: spread across the 104 MINI retailers listed in the release, Q3 works out to about 63 cars per retailer, or roughly 21 a month. It uses the current network rather than the Q3 average, so treat it as a sketch, but it shows how little room a small-volume brand has when one model has a bad quarter.

What to watch

Q4 will be decided by the Countryman, which has to recover for the brand’s trend to move back toward flat. The Convertible’s run is the other number to track. If it holds, the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door could lose its place as the best-selling Cooper in the US, which would have been hard to imagine a year ago.
