MINI Countryman Off-Road Model: What We Know

MINI is finally building the rugged Countryman its history has always promised. Design chief Holger Hampf has now confirmed what MotoringFile first reported a year ago: a genuinely off-road focused version of the U25 Countryman is coming, engineered with that intent from the start rather than bolted on after the fact.

Hampf, who took over as MINI’s head of design in late 2024, told Motor1 that the Countryman still has untapped potential and pointed directly at the outdoor lifestyle space as somewhere he wants to push the model further. It’s the first time anyone at MINI has said the quiet part out loud, and it lines up neatly with what our sources described back in March 2025.

That original reporting outlined a subtle suspension lift, unique wheels, all-terrain tyres and revised exterior and interior trim, all without turning the Countryman into a caricature of an overlander. Nothing in Hampf’s comments contradicts that. If anything, it confirms MINI is treating this as a proper variant rather than a one-off styling exercise.

The official MINI off-road package is available now. But it’s just a taste of what’s to come.

Worth noting: MINI has already put a stopgap on sale

In the meantime, MINI has rolled out port-installed Adventure and Adventure Plus packages for the Countryman S ALL4 and SE ALL4, the headline item being General Grabber AT3 all-terrain tyres on 18-inch JCW Y-Spoke wheels. It’s a reasonable stopgap and gives buyers something to option today, but there’s no ride height change and no suspension work behind it. It’s grip, not engineering. The real variant is still what’s coming.

Why we already know the hardware works

We’ve already tested the underlying case for this car. Last October we took a standard JCW Countryman deep into the Montana backcountry, on loose gravel, elevation changes and long stretches of washboard, not a curated influencer trail. The chassis handled it with real composure. The limiting factor was tyres and a suspension with more compliance and travel, exactly the two things this new model is expected to properly address.

X-Raid already previewed what’s possible

Separately, X-Raid’s 2025 collaboration with delta4x4 put a genuinely rally-derived Countryman on the road, with a 50mm suspension lift, widened track, 255/55 R18 tyres and TÜV-certified, street-legal hardware. It wasn’t built as a factory preview, but it raised the obvious question at the time: was this a hint at what MINI itself was about to do. Hampf’s comments suggest the answer is yes, even if the eventual factory version will be considerably tamer than X-Raid’s build.

MINI has also been quietly gathering real-world proof elsewhere. The electric Countryman SE’s Icelandic road trip in November had the car wearing off-road tyres, a roof rack and recovery gear across lava fields and freezing conditions, kit that looked suspiciously close to what this model is expected to wear from the factory.

The heritage case is real, not marketing

MINI has flirted with this idea for over a decade without committing. The 2010 Beachcomber Concept and the 2016 Clubman ALL4 Scrambler Concept both leaned into rugged, doorless, lifted design language, part of a longer off-road lineage we’ve traced in detail. X-Raid’s Dakar-winning Countryman ALL4 Racing delivered five rally titles between 2012 and 2020, which is the actual motorsport pedigree behind all of this, not something invented for a press release.

Timing and what’s still unconfirmed

We’re still expecting a debut sometime in 2026, though MINI hasn’t confirmed whether this lands as a standalone trim, similar to how JCW is positioned, or a deeper options tier built on top of the Adventure packages already on sale. Final styling, badge naming and market availability remain open questions.

What is clear is that the Countryman hasn’t played its last card yet. This one just happens to be covered in dust.
