BMW needed a way to build small, front-wheel-drive premium cars without bleeding money on each one. MINI was the vehicle, quite literally, for figuring that out first. The platform is called UKL, short for Untere Klasse, German for lower class. It is the reason the modern MINI Cooper drives, packages and shares parts the way it does, and it is still the architecture underneath the car today, more than a decade and one heavy revision later. What came before it To understand why UKL mattered, it helps to remember what it replaced. Every MINI from 2001 through 2013 traced back to a single structure: the original R50 chassis. The R56 generation and its many offshoots, R55 Clubman, R57 Convertible, R58 Coupe, R59 Roadster, and even the R60 Countryman and R61 Paceman, were all heavily revised evolutions of that first BMW-era MINI architecture, not clean-sheet designs. The engines told a similar story of improvisation. The R50 generation launched with the Tritec four-cylinder, a Chrysler-engineered iron block unit built in Brazil, an engine with no BMW DNA whatsoever. Beyond the engine bay, the first-generation cars leaned on countless components sourced from suppliers outside BMW’s established relationships, a legacy of the car’s rushed and unconventional development. When MINI needed a modern four-cylinder for the second generation, BMW’s own catalogue was still no help: its fours were designed for longitudinal, rear-wheel-drive installation and simply did not suit a transverse layout. The solution was the Prince family, co-developed with PSA Peugeot Citroen, which powered the R56 generation and a range of Peugeot and Citroen models besides. On paper, it worked. In practice, the Prince family became a cautionary tale. Sub-par engineering that fell short of BMW’s own standards has gone on to saddle those cars with expensive, well-documented issues, and it gave Munich a very tangible lesson in the cost of outsourcing the heart of the car. Between the Chrysler-era hardware, the borrowed French engines and the unfamiliar supplier base, MINI was BMW’s only front-wheel-drive product and everything about it, chassis and powertrain alike, sat outside BMW’s engineering culture and platform strategy. That could not continue. A clean sheet, at last The F56 changed all of that. It shared nothing with the R50 lineage. Underneath was UKL, an entirely new front-wheel-drive architecture developed by BMW alone, and under the bonnet sat BMW’s own new modular engine family: the B38 three-cylinder and B48 four-cylinder, designed from the outset for transverse installation. For the first time, MINI was not a brilliant outlier bolted onto borrowed or bespoke hardware. It was the launch product of BMW’s small car strategy. It is worth pausing on the timeline here. Platforms and engine families take many years to engineer, which means the decision to bring MINI fully in-house was made long before the F56 appeared in 2014, while the Prince-powered R56 was still in showrooms and its long-term problems were only beginning to surface. BMW was not reacting to a crisis. It was making a bet, years in advance, that owning every layer of the car was worth the enormous upfront cost. BMW first signalled that strategy publicly in 2011, when board member Ian Robertson confirmed a common platform would underpin up to a dozen cars across both brands. The logic ran in both directions. MINI got a modern, stiffer, properly funded architecture. BMW got something it had never had: the ability to sell smaller, front-wheel-drive BMWs into segments where a rear-drive layout made no packaging or business sense. One platform, two sizes UKL was conceived as a modular kit in two footprints. UKL1 is the smaller of the two and carries the Cooper family: F56 hatch, F55 five-door and F57 convertible. UKL2 is the larger version, carrying everything that needed more wheelbase: the F54 Clubman and F60 Countryman on the MINI side, and on the BMW side the front-wheel-drive 1 Series and 2 Series models, plus the X1 and X2. That larger UKL2 footprint is what made the whole programme pay, and it is also where the platform’s flexibility shows. Unlike the Cooper-sized cars, UKL2 accommodates all-wheel drive, BMW’s xDrive and MINI’s ALL4, which means those cars do carry a transmission tunnel to route power rearward. The packaging win comes instead from the transverse engine layout itself, which compresses the entire drivetrain into the nose and frees up cabin length a longitudinal rear-drive layout cannot match at the same footprint. It is why the X1 and 2 Series Active Tourer offered interior space their rear-drive predecessors and stablemates could not. The UKL1 cars, meanwhile, gave MINI a structure that was longer, wider and stiffer than the outgoing car, a difference most obvious in the convertible, where the added rigidity transformed the car. Crucially, the platform never diluted what made each product distinct. The same basic hardpoints served a go-kart-handling three-door hatch and a family crossover without either feeling like a compromise built for the other. That is the test most shared architectures fail. From UKL to FAAR Platforms evolve, and UKL2 has since been developed into FAAR, BMW’s updated front-wheel-drive architecture built with electrification in mind. FAAR currently underpins the Countryman, the 1 Series, the front-wheel-drive 2 Series models, and the X1 and X2. The Cooper family took a different path. The current F65 five-door, F66 hardtop and F67 convertible are not clean-sheet cars but heavily revised versions of the F56 structure, carrying new technology, new interiors and revised structure on the same fundamental bones. That the architecture launched in 2014 will carry the ICE Cooper into the next decade is a genuine engineering achievement, not a sign of neglect. What comes next Which brings us to the question that will define MINI’s next decade: what replaces all of this. The answer, based on MotoringFile’s reporting, splits cleanly along the same UKL1/UKL2 fault line the platform established in 2014. The Countryman’s path is the clearest. We first broke the news in fall 2023 that the next-generation Countryman EV would move to BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, taking full advantage of Gen6 800V battery and motor technology that promises roughly 30% gains in range and charging speed. That car, now carrying the NB5 code, will be the first MINI on a dedicated BMW electric architecture, and because Neue Klasse is engineered around a rear-drive-biased layout, it will likely be the first Countryman with fundamentally rear-wheel-drive dynamics. The timing has moved, though: sources tell us the petrol U25 Countryman is confirmed through 2032 and the Neue Klasse EV has been pushed back accordingly, meaning FAAR will soldier on well into the next decade. The Cooper is the harder problem, and the more interesting one. Work on the next entirely new generation of MINIs has officially begun, confirmed by design chief Holger Hampf and expected in the early 2030s, with an F66 LCI bridging the gap. But the platform question underneath remains genuinely open. As we laid out in our analysis of the Cooper’s future, BMW is consolidating to three global architectures: an EV-only Neue Klasse, a combustion-dedicated entry platform, and a flexible multi-energy architecture. Each points toward a different kind of Cooper, and none has been confirmed. What does seem clear, as we detailed in our full rundown of what we know so far, is that Neue Klasse is reserved for the Countryman and is unlikely to form the basis of the next Cooper in any form, while the China-built J01 platform is not a candidate for the next generation either. There is a certain symmetry to it. In 2011, BMW made a years-ahead bet that owning MINI’s architecture outright was worth the cost, and UKL carried the brand through more than a decade and multiple body styles without ever feeling like a car built for someone else. Now the same decision sits on the table again, with more powertrains, more regulatory uncertainty and higher stakes. Whatever BMW chooses, it will have been decided long before any of us see the car.
