MINI is recalling over 10,000 electric F56 based MINI Cooper SEs in the United States due to a fairly alarming manufacturing issue. The defect involves the battery and could lead to a “thermal event” even when the vehicle is turned off and parked.

The F56 MINI Cooper SE was the first all-electric version of the three-door Mini hatch and was introduced in early 2020. In total this recall includes 12,535 vehicles over the entire four year production run. According to the NHTSA, these MINIs may have battery packs that were not produced according to specifications.

The defect could cause short-circuits, which in turn could lead to overheating of the pack. In rare scenarios it could trigger “thermal event,” even if the car is off. That sounds like a potential fire to us.

According to the recall, MINI is investigating two customers who might have had confirmed cases relating to the issue. However it’s important to not that there are no known accidents or injuries yet reported.

The Simple Fix for the Electric MINI Cooper Recall

Luckily the fix is rather easy; a free software update. However since the F56 doesn’t offer over the air updates (OTAs) it must be brought into a MINI service center. Owners should see a letter in the mail over the next few weeks. Additionally if you have an F56 MINI Cooper SE and have questions, you can contact MINI USA customer service at 1-866-275-6464.
