2025 MINI Cooper’s Three Cylinder Engine is Dead

The costs of offering both an all new electric model range next to revised ICE models means MINI is having to make some compromises. Thanks to our sources we can now confirm one area of compromise is the number of engines available within the MINI line-up. More specifically the Cooper’s 3 cylinder petrol powered engine is being killed in an effort to simplify the line-up and reduce costs.

This doesn’t mean there won’t be a standard Cooper. What it means is that MINI will only offer the 2.0L B48 engine in all of its petrol powered models moving forward. This will allow for greater economies of scale as it readies the B48 to become Euro 7 compliant for 2025.

More Power for the Cooper

The good news is that this will mean more power. The 134 hp F56 Cooper will be heavily revised (as the F66) for 2024 and will get 155 hp. Torque figures are unknown at this time but expect that to rise as well. The downside will likely be more weight as the 1.5 liter 3 cylinder enjoyed a small but important weight advantage over the 2.0 liter 4 cylinder MINIs.

And as you can see below in our exclusive look at the next generation MINI Cooper models, there will still be a lot to choose from across the internal combustion range from MINI – as long as you like 2.0 liter engines. Most models will receive a notable power on the Cooper S but should remain the same as the F56 generation on the Cooper and JCW – at least for launch.
