  1. Of all the fresh ideas we see on the new generation of MINI’s perhaps the most unique is the circular display that dominates the interior. Along with its operating system MINI OS9, it’s an a fresh take on all the rectangular screens and generic UI we see in most other new cars. But how does it work and is it actually good? Over the past 9 months we’ve had a chance to use the new display and MINI OS9 quite a bit. Our first time was in an early production prototype J01 MINI Cooper EV last June. The OS wasn’t finished but what we saw, even in those pre-beta days, was incredibly impressive. But it wasn’t until the U25 MINI Countryman JCW preview in November that we got a chance to dig into the OS and really use it. What you see above is our first full look at MINI OS9. We did everything from open apps, dive into system settings and even set-up Apple CarPlay. While this version was in early beta phase, we still found the system to be responsive and overall a delight to use. But it wasn’t until February of this year that we finally got behind the wheel of a MINI with the new Circular Display and MINI OS9. As you can imagine sitting and exploring the system is one thing. Using it while driving is a completely different equation. And it’s here where the Circular Display and MINI OS9 became more than just eye candy As you can see in these series of video, we tested a number of different features on the car in the real world and on real roads. What you’ll notice in all of these videos is how easy the experience is to use. This was the first time I had driven the car and the fact that I could so effortlessly unlock all of this functionality through MINI OS9 speaks to the intuitive nature of it all. The Circular Display and MINI OS9 will be standard on all new MINIs from the all-new 2024 Countryman, F66 ICE MINI Cooper, J01 Cooper EV and eventually the 2025 Aceman EV. The circular OLED screen is 9.5” (240 mm) wide however, because of the bottom cutout, measures about 9” in height. While it may seem like unusual design given the rectangles we’re all used to, it feels very natural in person thanks to the way MINI has organized the information. The “Charismatic Simplicity” design language (as MINI calls it) is focused on both minimalism and a bit of MINI character. The circular OLED display seamlessly accommodates both static and dynamic elements, with a clear and intuitive hierarchy (despite the shape). This is all made possible not just by talented strategists and designers but a very thoughtful technical approach leveraging Android. Yes you read that right. But it’s not the Android you all know. It’s actually the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack which does several things for MINI. For one it allows MINI to leverage the massive scale of the Android App store of which MINI will create their own subset. But more importantly it allows MINI to leverage the army of Android engineers worldwide meaning that the platform MINI will rely on for future innovation is open and has a bright future. But don’t mistake the software stack as influencing the user experience. That’s 100% MINI’s own thinking and execution built on top of what is invisible but powerful technology. The Circular Display and MINI OS9 will be standard on all new MINIs. While functionality like Augmented Reality Navigation will be optional, most of what you see in the videos above is standard.   2. The MINI manual transmission is dead on the MINI Cooper. With the end of F56 production this February, the manual has left the MINI line-up for good. None of this is new if you’ve been reading MotoringFile but the reality for many is just setting. Why has MINI made this move? Here’s the full story. Why Is MINI Killing the Manual? MINI is killing the manual because of CO2 emissions and regulations in the European Union. Having spoken with plenty of MINI employees over the past year it’s clear to us that this was not a decision they wanted to make. On the face of it the F56’s Getrag six speed could have easily been carried over to the new F66 due to the almost identical drivetrain. But the realities of meeting the ever evolving emissions standards in the EU made that choice nearly impossible. The reason is the way that the EU tests for CO2 output. While manuals can theoretically be cleaner than an auto, it all depends on how they’re driven. The tests that the EU perform essentially highlight the fact that the manual has limitless variability in the way it can be operated. Where an automatic can be programmed to be completely in-sync with the engine and thus control CO2 output, the manual injects the fatal flaw of human control. That variable means that there could be a higher C02 output depending on how the car is driven. The way the EU executes its tests, these variables are amplified which means the manual (in the eyes of the EU) creates more C02 than a well engineered automatic. Even if, that might not be the case if operated properly. MINI could have said to hell with it but every brand has C02 targets to meet fleet wide and there’s simply not room for any extra C02 output within the ranks of the BMW Group. From Rolls Royce to BMW l, there are many cars with high output engines that produce a lot of C02. The MINI brand is essentially helping the entire group bring down its average by being economical. Cutting the manual furthers that in the eyes of the EU. What about markets like US, where CO2 targets don’t have the same impact? The idea that MINI could continue to offer the manual in the US and other markets is a tempting one. But the issue there is cost. Offering it one country means that the volumes go down dramatically which would raise the cost per unit. In doing so MINI would also lose a chance to simplify the production process just as it’s about to get more complex with new models. And that cost isn’t just about production but also support, parts and service for years to come. While the decision is a logical one, it’s also a risky move for MINI. By the second half of 2023 over 50% of F56 JCW hardtops in the US were equipped with the manual transmission. It’s also a huge part of the brand’s history and slots well into the MINI’s core philosophy of creating cars that are engaging the drive. It’s one of those core brand attributes that gave MINI credibility in the eyes of enthusiasts. The Replacement – The Getrag 7 Speed DCT Moving forward all internal combustion MINIs will be offered with two versions of the same 7 speed dual clutch transmission. The standard transmission will be called the Automatic DCT Transmission and will have shifting algorithm meant for everything from relaxed to mildly spirited driving. It will not come with steering wheel mounted paddles. The optional transmission is officially called the Sport Automatic DCT. It will have quicker shifts and will offer an even more aggressive algorithm in GoKart mode. It will also come standard with steering wheel mounted paddles. Our initial impressions were very positive. It’s a smoother transmission than the previous Aisin 8 speed but not necessarily quick shifting compared to other DCTs on the market. That said the manual controls (via the steering wheel mounted paddles) do work well and give you full manual control. That means in sport mode when you forget to shift, the car will not shift for you. Yes it’s old technology that has no logical place in a modern automobile. But there’s a reason that both Hyundai and Toyota and even BMW (if rumors are to believed) are working on manual transmissions for EVs. It creates engagement and connection with the car. It requires skill and practice that demand a driver treat the experience of driving with a respect that automatics or typical EVs don’t. And from that you get joy. The joy knowing that you and the car are in sync. And that you, the driver are solely responsible for engaging the right gear, in the right way, for the right moment.   3. If you’ve been reading MotoringFile you’ll know from our exclusive reporting that the F66 2025 MINI Cooper S you’ll know almost all the details imaginable on the car. Almost that is with the exception some important facts – final US specifications and options. Oh and photos of the car actually in the US. Today we have all of those for you. The F66 2025 MINI Cooper is the brand’s new (and last) petrol powered Cooper full of new tech and more powerful engines all riding on a revised F56 chassis. So if it looks eerily familiar, it’s because deep down it’s based on the same MINI Cooper that’s been on sale since 2014. Yet this new Cooper packs technology and performance that moves the game on from the previous model. L2 autonomous driving, augmented reality navigation and more powerful engines are all welcome additions. Because of this MINI USA is raising prices. The previous F56 Cooper had an MSRP of $25,800. For the 2025 F66 Cooper that’s going up to $28,950. The 2025 F66 Cooper S rises from $30,900 to $32,200. MINI Manual Transmission Is Dead It’s as shocking as it feels inevitable. Shocking because of the manual’s continued popularity in markets like the US. Over 50% of F56 JCW hardtops for the 2024 m/y were equipped with the manual transmission for instance. It’s also a huge part of the brand’s history and slots well into the MINI’s core philosophy of creating cars that are engaging the drive. Why would MINI eliminate manuals despite the fact that the F66 (the replacement of for the F56) is mechanically identical and could easily carry over the current Getrag 6 speed? It’s likely about simplifying drivetrains components and cutting costs within manufacturing. And for Europe (where CO2 targets are much more stringent) the manual is slightly dirtier. In the manual’s place is a revised 7 speed dual clutch transmission that will be consistent across the range. Key Differences Between the new F66 MINI Cooper & its Predecessor The F56 It’s important know that the new F66 MINI Cooper is not a simple refresh of its F56 predecessor. It’s an entire rethink of the F56 that just happens to be on the same chassis. The changes are so through that In fact the only visible parts of the car that have been carried over are the doors, the roof and the glass. Changes in Size and Weight The F66 is a slightly bigger car in height and width while being shorter overall. Inside this give the new F66 a bit more rear luggage room along with slightly more interior room for passengers. Case in point front seat shoulder room is up from 50.6″ to 51.2″. In the back its up to 49.1″ from 47.8″. We’ve previously talked about these change in our first hands-on video review of the F66 but these numbers bear it out in data. F66 curb weight are from EU figures as we wait for US specific data.One key piece of data we didn’t have until today is the final US specification weight figure of the Cooper S model. For the first time in stock form, the Cooper S weighs over 3,000 lbs with a total weight of 3,014 lbs. That’s 172 lbs heavier than the 2,842 lbs F56 Cooper S with the identical DCT. That weight is roughly equivalent to a full size 6″ human being riding shotgun with you all the time. Why the increase? MINI has added an enormous about of technology to the car (12 sensors powering a full autonomous driving system for instance) and new safety equipment that have added pounds. There’s also larger wheels and tires as standard along with more standard equipment in general. MINI USA tells us that if we were comparing a similarly equipped F56 to this new F66 the difference would be much closer. The F66 (top) is a dramatically simpler interior design that hides more advanced technology.The Interior of the F66 MINI Cooper While the exterior changes on the F66 may be surprising given its F56 origins, the interior is downright shocking. MINI has turned the F56 into a completely new car with all the design language, materials and technology found in the J01 MINI Cooper. The biggest change is the minimal design and large, circular display that dominates the experience. We’ve details that display, its operating system and its many functions on MotoringFile for months now. In fact you can see our full demo of the new system below. The new display and its software is a focal point for the entire driving experience housing almost all functionality save for a row of switches, buttons and toggles just below it. Stationary the new MINI OS9 interface had felt intuitive in our previous experiences. But in our time driving the new Countryman with an identical infotainment system we found a relatively learning curve before we felt fully acclimated with the new system. Within the first hour we had quickly become accustom to the new interaction language and overall placement of functionality. But is this better than MINI’s previous system? In our experience with the same system in the new Countryman, absolutely. The augmented navigation (part of the Comfort Package and Comfort Max Package) in particular was a standout. MINI’s First Vegan Interior When talking about there interior, the headline for many is that this new MINI is completely leather free. Why? There’s a big environmental impact due to the production of leather in the quantities that companies like MINI need. So much so that MINI has made the bold decision to eliminate leather entirely from its range. The results are surprisingly impressive. This isn’t chimney vinyl or even BMW’s leatherette from the E46. MINI calls it Vescin and it feels more premium than the mid-range leather MINI had previously offered and not far off from the premium Lounge Leather we’ve seen on MINIs for years. The F56 Cooper is getting a 14% power upgrade going from 134 hp to 156 hp in the F66 Cooper C. This change takes the C from 0-62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in 7.7 seconds. The more powerful F66 Cooper S gets a less dramatic 7.4% horsepower boost from 189 to 204 hp but sees a significant torque increase to 221 lb-ft. This gets the new F66 Cooper S to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds (60 in 6.3 seconds). And keep in mind these are both likely a conservative numbers knowing how BMW calculates figures. The F66 2025 MINI Cooper S comes with a revised version of the B48 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, generating an output of 201 horsepower and a maximum of 221 ft-lbs. of torque. That’s up from 189 hp and 206 ft lbs. This allows the Cooper S to go 0 to 60 MPH in 6.3 seconds with the sport automatic DCT – a slight .1 second increase from the previous, lighter model. One important note. Both the MINI Cooper S you see here and the forthcoming base MINI Cooper C will come to the US exclusively with four cylinder engines. The move means the cooper will share the same exact engine as the cooper s with the only difference being software. This could open the door for huge performance upgrade possibilities. The New MINI Family Launch Dates 1st Wave: U25 Countryman S, JCW & F66 Cooper S MINI is completely transforming its model range and the F66 2025 MINI Cooper S and the U25 Countryman S and JCW are the start. All three products have started production this month, with a vehicles arriving at dealers in May. Each dealer will receive several launch cars that will represent each model with the idea that they’ll be available for test drives and as a way to help potential buyers sort out models and options. 2nd Wave: U25 Countryman SE, F66 MINI Cooper & F65 Cooper S 4 Door The 2nd wave of this changeover will include the first new electric product to hit US shores. The electric Countryman SE (which we recently reviewed) will begin production in July with an official market launch happening early September. The F66 Cooper (with its uniquely US spec four cylinder engine) will finally begin production and make it to dealers in the same timeframe. Along side of it will be the introduction of another new model, the F65 Cooper S four door hatch. 3rd Wave: F67 Cooper Convertible, F65 Cooper 4 Door & F66 Cooper JCW The 3rd wave will round out the year with some of the most anticipated models. MINI will begin production of the Convertible in all models (the Cooper, Cooper S and JCW) in November with a market introduction in January of 2025. They will be joined by the Cooper four door and finally (the one we’ve been waiting for) the F66 Cooper JCW.   4. Last month we went hands-on with the new BMW Neue Klasse X concept and came away incredibly impressed with the design and technology behind it all. But there was one piece of technology that was blew our minds and could radically reshape MINI’s in-car interface by the end of the decade. In yesterday’s part 1 of our report on BMW radical Neue Klasse X concept, we focused on how it could influence the next generation electric Countryman’s range and performance. Today we’re we’re talking tech and how BMW’s new iDrive and specifically it’s Panoramic Display could make its way into MINI’s starting with the next generation electric Countryman – due sooner than you might think. While the technical advancements of the Neue Klasse platform are impressive, perhaps the most exciting aspect that might find its way in MINIs is the interior technology. We say might because we have no sources yet telling us this. But it’s logical to assume MINI would be looking at leveraging the revolutionary new BMW Panoramic Display and elements of the new iDrive concept destined for the Neue Klasse generation of BMWs. You can easily imagine a similar windshield based experience in future MINIsWhat’s the Panoramic Display? It’s part of a new generation of iDrive based on the same tech that underpins the latest MINI circular display. But before we get into that aspect of BMWs new infotainment concept, let’s talk about the bigger picture. There are four key components to this system; a multifunction steering wheel controller, the Central display with matrix backlighting and local dimming, the Panoramic Display and a 3D (augmented reality) heads-up display. All four are interesting but it’s the Panoramic Vision that feel unlike anything we’ve seen before. The Panoramic Vision actually isn’t a screen but actually three separate 4K projectors that project light onto a black band at the bottom of the windshield. With projection BMW can use nothing more than standard automotive glass keeping product costs and potential rock-chip related repair bills down. It’s also using an area that is both historically dead space in a car and one that is the direct line of sight of a driver. In so many ways it feels like a logical conclusion to where infotainment system design has been going. In our brief hands-on time with the system in the Neue Klass and the Neue Klasse X, we were blown away at both its simplicity and its functionality. It had that rare experience of being both incredibly intuitive while being even more function rich than before. The Magical Panoramic Vision Then it gets really cool. Any of the widgets can be swiped up and into the Panoramic Vision. There are a handful of widget areas so a swipe up to the left puts the widget directly into the driver’s field of view for instance. It’s an ingenious system that, while technically complex feels utterly intuitive and simple. This interplay between the experience zones is just one aspect of the system however. BMW is also introducing a 3D HUD above the Panoramic Vision, centered on driver. It will allow for augmented reality displays of information as a 3rd layer of experience. Designers have also connected inputs and reactions to light in the cabin. So there are subtle lights that responds to inputs like temperature and volume changes. It helps to emphasize the interaction and also gives the car the feeling like it’s alive and at your beckon. In our brief time with the system we were genuinely impressed how thoughtfully each of the displays and inputs areas worked together. And the addition of functionality while feeling more intuitive than previous versions of the already excellent iDrive system was a surprise. But it’s the Panoramic Display that signaled something entirely new in the world of automotive infotainment. Leveraging dead space to improve safety while adding functionality seems impossible but that’s exactly what BMW designers have accomplished. The BMW Panoramic Display will debut with the Neue Klasse generation of electric vehicles in 2025 and will likely also be part of BMW’s last generation of ICE cars as well. While we have no direct knowledge of MINI making use of this concept, it would be hard to imagine the brand not leveraging some version of the technology in the years ahead. It’s just that good.   5. The all new electric MINI Countryman hasn’t even reached buyers hands yet and we already have a glimpse of what’s next. This past week BMW took the wraps off of the BMW Neue Klasse X concept which itself is a peek at the forthcoming electric BMW X3. But more importantly this concept is a preview of how BMW (and MINI) will approach its next generation of electric cars and crossover. We went hands-on with this radical new concept in Portugal and talked to the designers and engineers who created it and are working on the next generation of electric BMWs. What we learned shed light on key aspects of future BMWs and MINIs. The new U25 electric MINI Countryman is the most complex and advances model MINI has ever created. It’s particular impressive as it’s sold both as an internal combustion and electric car. That’s made possible by BMW and MINI’s use of the new FAAR platform which allows for internal combustion engines (ICE), plugin hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric (BEVs) vehicles. However there is a downside to this amount of flexibility. Because the platform is designed to accommodate so many powertrains there are some key engineering tradeoffs. The tradeoffs in EV form are primarily about packaging and efficiency. The biggest is that the electric U25 MINI Countryman can’t pack as many battery cells as dedicated skateboard chassis EV can because it has to deal with structure built for internal combustion drivetrains. This also translates into less interior room and a use of space that’s not as ideal of effective as bespoke electric cars. Luckily BMW and MINI are already working on what’s next and the Neue Klasse X gives us some clues. The BMW Neue Klasse Connection to Next Generation MINIs First let’s demystify what the Neue Klasse terminology is. The phrase is an homage to the Neue Klasse generation of vehicles that BMW created in the 1960’s that quite literally saved the company. Highly advanced for the time, they defined the notion of the sports sedan and set the company on a course that continues to this day. BMW has similar aspirations with this modern day Neue Klasse. At its core this is an advanced electric vehicle platform designed with 15 years of accumulated knowledge from BMW’s electric cars. But it’s more than just a skateboard chassis. The term Neue Klasse also extends to the next generation electric engines and batteries which promise to be more powerful and 30% more efficient all while being smaller. The Neue Klasse platform is highly modular and will accommodate front, rear and all-wheel drive models in varying wheelbases, tracks and heights. Additionally it’s designed to offer wheel sizes ranging from 18in to 22in. In short it will underpin every EV that BMW produces (from the 2 Series to the 7 Series). According to trusted sources this will include MINIs like the Countryman which are based on BMW underpinnings. At this time it’s unclear if BMW has any aspirations to shrink the platform down to accommodate a future version of the MINI Cooper. Given complexities of the global production of the J01 a decision in that front seems unlikely for years. But the next generation Countryman is another story. Late stage clay buck design for the U25 MINI CountrymanEnter The 2028 NE5 MINI Countryman Our sources have confirmed that the next generation Countryman will be codenamed the NE5 and will be based on the Neue Klasse platform. But the big news is that its introduction will be pushed up replacing the current U25 electric Countryman before the normal seven year lifecycle. Based on our sources, the current U25 electric Countryman will end production two years early in October 2028. Accordingly the next generation NE5 electric Countryman will begin production (likely at the German Leipzig Plant) in November of 2028. The ICE powered Countryman C, S and JCW will have (at least) a normal seven year product cycle until its production ends on December 31st, 2030. And even that’s influx. We’re hearing that that date is tentative and might be extended based on demand. But more on that at a later date. An Increase in Performance and Range For the 2028 NE5 Countryman Given that the 2028 NE5 Countryman will be based on the Neue Klasse platform we can surmise a few key details. Let’s start with the propulsion system. First expect an 800v system architecture allowing for much faster charging times and even Bidirectional charging. Second we should see higher battery density with a 30% overall improvement in range from the same size battery pack. Rumors point to BMW using 75, 90 and 105kWh battery sizes across its range of cars with the Countryman (and its X1 and X2 twins) likely seeing an upgrade to 75kWh from its current 66.5 kWh (63.78 kWh usable size). Finally there will be a new generation of electric motors that are smaller, more efficient and even more powerful than before. The results are obvious. Expect noticeably improved range from a larger, more dense and more efficient battery pack. That should translate into conservative EPA range figures well above 300 miles. But just as important you’ll be able to charge at an increased rate. Imagine it taking only 12 minutes to gain almost 200 miles of range. That’s theoretically possible.   6. It’s here. After waiting to the last possible day to order and a long production process, my carefully specced and highly anticipated MINI Clubman JCW is finally in my garage. It’s one of the last produced and potentially the last customer ordered Clubman JCW delivered to the US. But why would I buy a model that’s been on sale for seven years now vs one of the new MINIs about to be released? Before I answer that question I need to go back in time a bit. While others in the MotoringFile family have personal MINIs, it’s been a long time since I’ve had one. Having a constant stream of press cars has allowed me and others at MotoringFile to sample every MINI model and option over the years. It’s why MotoringFile is so well informed about what MINI sells. But the downside is that it’s kept me from having a MINI of my own I can enjoy, mod and care for. I’ve been so personally focused on driving every car MINI makes that I’ve not had the time to devote to what I want from MINI. Until now. Why I Chose to Buy a Clubman JCW Clearly the rest of the world doesn’t have the same mind-set as the Clubman ever hit its sales goals outside of the Japanese market (where there’s clearly good taste). Because of this MINI is culling it from the line-up and adding another crossover in its place. It’s a move that makes sense on paper as the entire world is seemingly moving to the crossover shape. But to me it’s incredibly shortsighted. As crossovers saturate the market globally there will be a growing chorus for something different. In many ways the Clubman (and the wagon shape itself) is the perfect antidote as it takes the best of the crossover in terms of utility and marries it with less weight and more performance. It also looks infinitely better. But that’s clearly subjective. What isn’t subjective this is the ultimate four door MINI. It’s far closer to the original concept for the brand than the Countryman and is very likely to be the highest performing petrol powered MINI of all time. It officially does 0-60 in 4.6 seconds (which has proven somewhat conservative by independent tests) and can hang with a JCW GP at many tracks. How do we know? We went nose to tail with one a couple of years ago at the Thermal Race Track in California and were shocked and how the Clubman was able to keep pace. So why not that new Countryman JCW I just tested? The new U25 Countryman JCW is much more compelling now that I’ve driven it. It’s truly impressive and definitely pushes the game onward for the brand. But I’m personally not that excited by yet another crossover. What I love is functionally driven design. Something that combines utility with high performance capabilities. And there’s no shape that blends that better than a classic wagon. Taking delivery of My Clubman JCW The Chicago weather had been incredible for early March right up until two hours before I went to pick-up my Clubman. But even a torrential downpour wasn’t going to keep me from a fantastic experience. MINI of Glencoe was the typical red carpet rolled out and the car stationed in its delivery bay ready to go. But I wanted no part in seeing the car ahead of time. It’s great having complete trust in a salesperson and my Motoring Advisor Evan Williams was amazing throughout the ordering and buying process. Pro-tip on that subject. Get as much as you can done before you walk in to formally buy your car. Sign off on final price and virtually sign as much paperwork as you can or feel comfortable with. Doing that allowed the actual process of buying the car to take place over minutes rather hours. The result is that you’re focused on what you’re there for. The car you ordered and have been waiting on for months. Once the final piece of paper was signed I wanted to do something a bit different and bring the MotroringFile audience with me. So I grabbed my GoPro and did a one-take walk-around which you can see in the video above. As you can tell I was thrilled with the combination of colors, materials and trim that I had chosen. With the connections I had, there was an opportunity to do something even more unique. But in the end I settled on what anyone could have ordered and was thrilled with the result. Rebel Green is hands-down my favorite MINI color of all time. Harkening back to the very rare WC50 R56 JCW, Rebel Green is one of those colors that changes dramatically depending on its surroundings. Black in dark light and a beautiful British Racing green in others, its has an elegance and vintage feel that connects MINI’s heritage while feeling modern. Adding to that is the multi-tone roof finished in white, Melting Silver and black. Similar that combination brings that vintage vibe with the classic white roof while visually redoing the length of the car as it fades to black. But its the Melting Silver that really is striking in person with is warm tone subtly connecting with the interior. And that interior. I’ve written for years about the low quality of MINI’s leather (except for the Lounge Leather mind you) and have often said you’re better off with cloth or the JCW Dynamica. But none of that matters when you have such a rich color like Malt Brown. The Chesterfield Malt Brown seats add to that vintage vibe and tie the MINI heritage with modern design sensibilities. I’ll gladly get over mediocre leather quality for the amazing look of these seats. The First Drive After a long and immensely enjoyable walk through of the car with Evan, I finally opened the doors to the rain and ventured out into the world as a new Clubman JCW owner. From there I immediately headed to Sheridan Rd. along the lake on the North Shore of Chicago. What I felt is a car that had a sharper turn-in, was more eager and felt immediately quicker than the U25 Countryman JCW I had just driven in Portugal. Granted this now older generation of MINI is not as refined as that car. The ride is less forgiving and even the road noise is a bit higher. But for my needs this car hits the sweet spot between performance, utility and comfort perfectly. The Clubman JCW may be old in automotive terms, but it’s more immediately engaging, quick and let’s be honest, more interesting than the new or old Countryman. Now that I own one, yes I am officially biased. But above all this car hits my problem statement straight on. It’s the perfect MINI at blurring the line between performance and utility. Now onto the modifications. By the time you read this I will have lowered the car, pushed the tires and wheels outward, added structural rigidity and entirely replaced the plastic shift paddles with beautifully crafted metal ones.   7. After years of requests, MINI is finally offering a remote start option. Long requested from those in both very warm and very cold climates, the remote engine start will work primarily with the MINI remote app allowing owners to warm their cars ahead of departure. But what models and when will it be available? We’ve got details. The new remote start option will be all petrol powered U25 Countryman starting with March production. Similarly the option will be optional on all F66 Cooper models also starting with March production. Eventually the option will also be available on the F65 four door Cooper when it begins production in July of this year. Finally we’ll also see it on the F67 Cooper convertible as it begins production in November. How does it work? Two ways, first there’s the app. From the MINI app you’ll not only be able to start the car but define the exact time you’d like to start it. Crucially this also will allow you to set the heating or cooling temperatures to pre-condition the cabin. The other option is the fob. With the fob simply click the lock button three times within a distance of 100 to 230 feet and the car will start. However there’s an important caveat when using the fob. Assuming the system works like the BMW X1, the only way to remotely turn on the air conditioning or heating will be via the app or by pre-selecting the departure time in the car’s climate setting.   8. The new Countryman is big. But this is nothing new as the Countryman has grown in every generation since its 2010 launch. But just how bigger is the new U25 MINI Countryman and what does that give you in terms of space? We’ve got a detailed look at all the dimensions and specs. The F60 Countryman debuted in 2017 and looked massive in comparison. It grew 8″ in length and offered much more legroom (especially in the rear) and a huge increase in luggage space. That’s actually quite a bit more than the new Countryman which has grown almost 50% less than the F60 grew over the R60. Yet it looks massive in comparison. Some of that is surely down to it being a new car, a new shape and a larger MINI than we’ve ever seen before. But it’s also due to where the size increase has come from. As you can see below the biggest increase by percentage is actually height which is quite noticeable in person. Then there’s the length which has grown primarily in one spot – behind the rear tires. There’s a touch more legroom, elbow room and noticeably more luggage space in the back. You can see in the numbers above where that space comes from. The biggest change is the length and a lot of that is in the rear luggage area which has grown considerably. Given the market needs, this change feels spot on and what MINI needed to do. Especially given the Aceman will fill the void and be sized close to the original R60 Countryman. The new Countryman and Its Weight When we looked at the new Countryman’s technical specifications for the first time, the thing that jumped out to us was the curb weight. It’s up as we anticipated but (also as we predicted) not as much as you’d think given the size and equipment increase. For instance the F60 2023 JCW Countryman weighs 3,688 lbs. Compare that to the all new U25 JCW Countryman at 3,825 lbs and you have only a 137 lbs difference. We say only because there was a lot of us who assumed it would be quite a bit higher. This is likely due to the various weight savings measures that BMW built into the new FAAR platform including extensive use of aluminum and lighter steel. In our time with the new Countryman JCW, it’s clear engineers have done an excellent job in hiding the extra size and even mass present. That said there’s no way to get around that this new Countryman is heavier and (crucially) has more weight up higher than before. But for the vast majority of customers there’s little discernible downside to the extra side and weight. In fact the way MINI has engineered the steering and suspension most will find this new Countryman both easier to drive while producing more feedback through its quicker steering.   9. Earlier this month we brought you our own F66 MINI Cooper ordering guide for the US market. This week we’re following that up with the same in-depth look but for the all new U25 MINI Countryman. We go into detail on the colors, options, wheels and trim packages much of which are all new. Consider this our cheat code for ordering a new U25 MINI Countryman in the US. MINI Cooper Availability and Ordering Process for the US MINI USA is offering a wide variety of design elements. This along with MINI USA’s trims means ordering a new U25 MINI Cooper is a bit more confusing than before. However if you remember the basics it’s fairly straight forward. The first step of course is the model. The Countryman S and JCW will be on sale in early May with the electric SE coming in early September. MINI USA’s U25 MINI Countryman Styles This is where things get a bit confusing. In addition to Trims (which MINI USA has offered for years) we now have “styles”. These styles are just the start as we may see one or two added and maybe even a name change. U25 MINI Countryman Classic StyleIn the mean time we have classic and favoured. The differences can be summed up simply – one is dark and one is light. One has matte black trim inside and out while one has a light gold color (MINI calls this Vibrant) trim inside and out. These changes are summed up above. For those looking for even more variation – we’re told there’s a lot coming in the future including some wild dashboard designs. MINI Countryman Seat Options MINI has completely rethought the design of their seats to accomplish several goals; save weight, reduce complexity and allow the seats to fit more body types more comfortably. While reducing some of the elements in the seats, they’ve also added a few; massage and ventilation options are now available. They’ve also made electric seats optional on all models – even the Cooper. Finally MINI has fully eliminated leather and have moved to a proprietary material called Vescin. In total that represents a massive shift in what MINI has offered since it’s relaunch in 2001. Sport Seats Across all new MINI models there will be two different seats. But unlike the previous MINI seats in the F Series cars, they share almost same overall design. However there are a couple of differences. The standard sport seats have slightly flatter bolsters on both the lower cushion and seat back. These renders don’t show the differences but they are there (albeit subtle ones). The JCW sport seats also have an integrated headrests similar to the current F Series JCW seats. However crucially both do not offer extendable thigh-bolsters as previously in the optional sport seats. On paper that sounds like an unfortunate cost cutting move that would make the new seats less supportive. In our brief time we can tell you that doesn’t appear to be the case. The new seat cushion is longer and while doesn’t quite reach the length the extendable bolsters do, they’ll likely be close enough for most. In addition the electric seats we tested have the ability to move the thigh bolster upward which is intended to take the place of the manual extending bolster. And in our testing it all works pretty well. Despite being 6’2” I was immediately felt comfortable and felt plenty of thigh support. Compare that to the R50 or R56 seats and these are noticeably longer and out of the box more comfortable. U25 MINI Countryman Favored StyleU25 MINI Countryman Standard Features MINI USA has made some big change in the amount of standard features on the Countryman. Notably many of what you see below are not standard in most markets. This points to MINI USA pushing the Countryman up market a bit based on how customers have been ordering their cars. This is especially evident when you consider MINI USA has dropped the entry-level Countryman (now called the C) altogether. Suffice to say if you go with the Iconic trim (the most expensive) there’s no up charge for any color. U25 MINI Countryman Wheel Options MINI USA will offer six MINI Countryman wheels at launch. Gone are the 16″ and 17″ wheel options as MINI has made 18″ the standard wheel on the S and 19″ on the JCW. Worth noting that when you opt for the 20″ wheels on the JCW, you also get BMW M2 derived front brakes. U25 MINI Cooper Trim Levels Once you’ve made a call on the style you’ll want to choose a trim level. Typically this has coupled options together in a good, better, best format. Historically it’s been the opposite with US regulations affecting the output of European cars in order to meet emissions regulations. However things are changing in a big way. Now that European regulations are becoming more aggressive, we’re seeing a pretty major shift in what market has more power. Let’s start by looking at the recently release MINI Countryman S with ALL4. In Europe and the UK that car comes equipped with a mild hybrid version of the B48 to lower C02 and fall into compliance with the stringent emissions. MINI USA decided to not take the mild hybrid version of the B48 for several reasons. For one it’s not needed as the B48 easily meets emissions standards. Second MINI USA preferred to reduce the weight and complexity of the car for better overall performance. The upside is the Countryman S in the US will make 241 hp and 295 lbs ft. It’s a similar story on the Countryman JCW however with no mild hybrid to confuse things. There European and UK versions of the Countryman JCW have their B48 tuned to 300 hp due to the same emissions compliance issues. The US market was able to stretch things a bit to 312 hp – a new high power figure for the MINI brand. The ICE powered 2024 Countryman S will start at $38,900 in the US. That will get you a fairly well equipped car but certainly not loaded. The Countryman JCW starts at $46,900 well equipped. The MINI Aceman technically Replaces the Clubman in the line-up But the Dimensions Tell a very different story The MINI Aceman leak last week shed some light on the final styling of the brand’s all new electric crossover. But without it sitting next to the new U25 Countryman it’s hard to tell just how big (or small) it really is. Thanks for our sources we’ve got exclusive look at technical specs and dimensions that show how the Aceman stacks up to the new Countryman and previous models. Size Differences: Aceman vs Countryman The Aceman is a small crossover that is effectively replacing the Clubman in the MINI line-up. But in reality it doesn’t replacement the Clubman at all as it’s both smaller and designed as a crossover rather than a wagon. Instead think of it as a product that fills the void left when the Countryman grew in size from the original R60 model to the recent F60 model in 2015. The new MINI Aceman The original R60 CountrymanThe best example of this is the Aceman’s length. In photos it’s hard to tell because the tall belt-line and large wheels. But the length is actually bigger than it might initially look. The MINI Aceman measures in at be 4079mm / 161 in in length. That’s a full 14″ shorter than the 4444mm / 175 in new U25 Countryman. The R60 was 4119mm / 162.2in long making that original Countryman slightly larger than the new Aceman. Similarly when you look and height and wheelbase the Aceman is also fractionally smaller. However while the R60 has a larger footprint, things look a bit different inside. The U25 Countryman in the foreground, the J05 Aceman in the middle and the J01 MINI Cooper EV in the back.it may be camouflaged, but these are still the best photos we have of the J05 and the U25 together.For instance the R60 Countryman’s front shoulder width is 1341mm / 52.8in. By contrast the new Aceman offers over an inch more room for front passengers with a width of 1370mm / 53.9. Not surprisingly the same is true for front legroom. There the R60 has 1025mm / 40.4in while the smaller Aceman is slightly more comfortable with 1045 mm / 41.1in of room in the front. Not unlike the original classic Mini, the Aceman is great at being small on the outside while being surprisingly rooms inside. This is a result of clever packaging thanks to MINI using a bespoke electric platform. Aceman Specifications vs the Electric U25 Countryman SE Now let’s take a look at the full specs and how that compares to the new electric Countryman SE. Here you’ll see some clear distinctions that MINI has made to separate these two products. The most obvious (beyond size) is power and number of wheels drive. Yes, the Aceman is a solely front wheel drive vehicle. While a 3,600 lbs car can’t be considered light, it is for a four door electric crossover. The other number that jumps out is just how close the wheelbase is to the Countryman. This shows MINI has pushed the wheels to the corners as much as possible. Because of this close relationship with the J01 both the battery and the electric motor output are identical. The downside of this move is that range will be lower in the Aceman given the weight penalty. Another carry over is wheels driven. As we mentioned above the Aceman is exclusively front wheel drive. That’s because the J01 chassis not designed to offer a two engine layout which allows for all wheel driven electric vehicles. This engineering choice unfortunately means the Aceman as little if no off-road credentials other than well groomed trails. J05 MINI Aceman Release Info The MINI Aceman will initially be built in China by a joint venture with Great Wall Motors. We believe those vehicles will be sold in Asia and Europe exclusively. Then in 2026 MINI will move some of that production to Oxford along with the J01 MINI Cooper EV. These cars coming out of the UK will serve Europe and likely the North American markets and will allow MINI to avoid tariffs as it begins US imports in the 2026 calendar year. While it’s too early have a full picture of cost, we’d expect finally pricing to be 10-15% cheaper than the U25 Countryman EV.   11. The new J05 MINI Aceman and J01 MINI Cooper may not look that similar on the surface. But looking deeper these two cars are extraordinarily similar in tech and even in some dimensions. We have an exclusive look at data that paints an interesting picture of incredible similarities and a few key differences. Looking at the specifications, the first thing you realize is that the Aceman is based on a stretched version of the J01 skateboard chassis. First off that means we’ll see identical technical specs (more on that later) and an exclusively front wheel drive product line. Because of this, the J01 MINI Cooper substantially influences the dimensions and mechanical layout of the Aceman. So while the Aceman is 192mm (7.6″) longer and 130mm (5.1″) wider than the new Cooper, it’s only 23mm (1″) wider. What becomes very obvious the more you look is that the Aceman is truly just a stretched J01 with extra doors and a taller roofline. Another way to look at it is in terms of the F56 family of MINIs. Like the F55 MINI Cooper four door (itself a stretch version of the F56), the J05 is a longer, more spacious J01. Which in turn makes something else pretty obvious – the Aceman is not is a direct replacement for the recently departed and larger Clubman. The J05 vs the J01 – Mechanical Similarities Because of this close relationship with the J01 both the battery and the electric motor output are identical. This gives MINI great economies of scale but it also means the J05 has to use power units and batteries designed for a smaller car. Because of this (and the weight penalty that the J05 has over the J01) we expect a lower range and less performance compared to the new Cooper EV. Another carry over from the J01 the front wheel drive architecture that underpins the J05 Aceman. This is due to the J01 chassis not being designed to offer a two engine layout that would allow for which all wheel drive in an electric vehicles. This engineering choice unfortunately means the Aceman as little if no off-road credentials other than well groomed trails. One area where there’s a material difference is luggage capacity. As you can see above the Aceman has more than double the capacity with there seats up. That difference decreases slight when the seats are down but it’s still a respectable 1450 liters. How does that compare to the dimensionally similar R60 Countryman? It’s identical with the seats up at 450 liters but the Aceman actually has 280 liters more space with the seats down. Comparing that to the more recent F60 Countryman the Aceman still holds it’s down with an identical luggage figure with the seats up but surprisingly 60 more liters when the seats are folded down. Getting more space out of a smaller footprint is a huge advantage of skateboard chassis EV vehicles as the Aceman proves. Inside the J05 Aceman will be leverage the J01 Cooper’s interior layout in its entirety. That means we’ll see the seats and exact center stack design from the J01 and not the larger center stack from the Countryman. This will include the J01’s seat mounted armrest, slimmer center console and more horizontal smartphone charging area. Will the MINI Aceman Come to the United States and the rest of North America? One benefit of these similarities is that putting these two vehicles down the same production line is relatively easy. While the MINI Aceman will initially be built in China, we expect it will expand to UK production at the same time as the J01 Cooper in 2026. The cars being produced in the UK will serve Europe and likely the North American markets. This will allow MINI to avoid tariffs as it likely begins US imports in the 2026 calendar year. The key word is likely as sources tell us final decisions on where the Aceman will be sold are still being made.   12. In what we can only call a major oversight by MINI, the forthcoming electric MINI Aceman Crossover will not be offered with all wheel drive even as an option. In our mind this is a major misstep for the vehicle that MINI looks at as its future volume seller globally. Why and could the options eventually come to the Aceman? Read on. The reason is fairly simple. The J05 Aceman on a lengthened version of the J01 electric MINI Cooper’s skateboard chassis. That chassis is designed to accommodate a single electric engine and a flat battery pack between its wheels. Why? Likely for two reasons. MINI has been very keen to differentiate the Aceman from the Countryman in terms of price and equipment. What better way to clearly mark out the difference between the two by making the smaller, cheaper model not available with AWD. The thought is likely that, if a buyers wants AWD, they’ll likely be ok with spending more on a larger car to get it. Another is likely cost. Keeping the Aceman front wheel drive immediately keeps prices lower even in high-spec models. That’s important because MINI wants the Aceman to be an entry point for consumer into the brand that need more room than the new electric Cooper. In effect it’s taking the place of the four door Cooper in the electric line-up and not the larger Clubman. As you can see below, the MINI Countryman C has better range than the all wheel drive SE and we can imagine the same would happen with an all wheel drive Aceman. While the Countryman’s higher range can accommodate a slight decrease, the Aceman is offered exclusively with the smaller and lighter J01 Cooper’s drivetrain configurations. That means it’s already at a disadvantage of having a lower range than the J01 and certainly the U25. Adding all wheel drive would likely bring that range figure down even figure making it a tough sell. Then there’s the reality that all wheel drive is unnecessary for the vast majority of driving scenarios. As a road based electric car the with highly advanced stability and traction control and excellent weight distribution, the front wheel drive Aceman will likely excel in snow with the proper tires. Having driven from wheel drive MINIs in snow for years (most recently in an Alpine blizzard) the proper tires are more important than which wheels are driven in our experience. While all wheel drive is considered a must have for many consumers, the reality is that it adds weight, cost and reduces efficiency all for the rare scenario where it’s actually needed. And if you truly do need it, you’d be better off with the Countryman which has higher ground clearance and more light off road capability. All that said we still think it’s a mistake to not have designed the Aceman to accommodate all wheel drive as an option. As much as we think it’s unnecessary, the reality is the market demands it and MINI will be missing out on sales because of it.   13. We were scheduled to get our first look at the MINI Aceman in April 24th. That time table was dramatically moved up thanks images of the final car leaking onto the internet giving us a preview of the car inside and out. What we see is a car that feels like the smaller, more athletic looking sibling to the Countryman slotting in perfectly between it and the new MINI Cooper. The Aceman the first all new model from MINI since the original Countryman. However this new crossover is actually based on the smaller J01 MINI Cooper EV. In fact it’s so heavily connected to that car that it will share all of its drivetrain including its electric motor, battery pack and electronics. In many ways the relationship between the J01 MINI Cooper and the J05 Aceman is not that different than the F56 two door hatch to the F55 four door hatch. The key difference of course is height and proportions which was likely much easier to alter with a skateboard chassis given it’s fully electric origins. The MINI Aceman Model Line-Up The electric MINI Aceman will initially launch with two models late this year. The entry level Aceman E will have 184hp and 214 lb-ft and would likely fall be in between to an F60 Countryman S in straight-line performance. The more powerful SE will pump out 218 hp and 243 lb-ft and likely see performance figured that eclipse the F60 Countryman S. The R60 was 4119mm / 162.2in making that original Countryman actually larger than the new Aceman. Going deeper we see that trend playout elsewhere; R60 shoulder width is 1341mm / 52.8in which is smaller than the 1370mm in the Aceman. Not surprisingly the same is true for front legroom. There the R60 is 1025mm / 40.4in. while the smaller Aceman looks more comfortable with 1045 mm / 41.1 in. MINI Aceman Specifications vs the New U25 Countryman Now let’s take a look at the full specs and how that compares to the new electric Countryman SE. As you can see MINI has made a clear distinction between the two modes in terms of power and performance. While a 3,600 lbs car can’t be considered light, it is for a four door electric crossover. The other number that jumps out is just how close the wheelbase is to the Countryman. This shows MINI has pushed the wheels to the corners as much as possible. Front Wheel Drive Only One big distinctions between the Aceman and Countryman will be wheels driven. Unlike the electric Countryman which offers ALL4, the Aceman will be front wheel drive and likely share its drivetrain design with the electric Cooper. While MINI might eventually squeeze in a second motor creating an ALL4 capable car, its relation to the J01 Cooper means that could be unlikely. MINI Aceman Design Details Given that this leak looks to have come from someone within the local Chinese Government passing along regulatory photos, we also have all variations of wheels, trim and even some options. What’s clear here is that MINI is following the same template they’ve established from the J01 in terms of colors and over all design aesthetic. MINI Aceman Performance & Range Details Next we’ll take a look at the performance and how it compares to the J01. As you can see MINI has carried one the drivetrain completely including battery size. While we don’t have range figures yet, it’s safe to say they will be lower than the J01 due to the increase in weight of the Aceman. Once again this drive home the point that he Aceman truly is just a large J01 MINI Cooper that sits higher and has four doors.   14. The F66 MINI Cooper S has debuted and is now in production. But what about the JCW version? We’ve got exclusive details on MINI’s top spec Cooper on everything from power, torque to design details and release dates. The manual transmission might be gone, but this new JCW looks like the best yet. 2025 MINI Cooper JCW: Design Starting with styling we can immediately get a good idea of how the new F66 JCW will look but simply looking at the JCW Trim offered in Europe. Also known as Sport Trim in the UK, this takes the JCW bodykit and applies it to any MINI in those markets. According to sources there will be almost no differences between the way these cars with the JCW Trim look and the full JCW coming later this year. F66 JCW TrimJ01 JCW TrimLooking at these renders we can clearly see the J01’s JCW Trim design aesthetic was followed closely. The front bumper however has real ducts due to the need to cool the JCW B48 engine and we’re told the brake ducts also remain. In fact the JCW front bumper is quite close to what we’ve seen previously on the F56 as you can see below. Elsewhere you can clearly see MINI has moved to gloss black side skirts on the JCW along with gloss black fender flares. This follows the trends towards gloss black we’ve seen elsewhere. The F66 JCW will have a slightly revised B48 engine under the hood – more specifically the B48A20O2. The big performance update will be torque which increases from 236 to 258 ft lbs giving the car a bit more grunt. Perhaps just important, it peaks lower in the rev range as. Previously in the F56 JCW torque maxed-out at 1,450. The B48A20O2 sees this change to 1,250 rpm meaning maximum power is even more immediate. These are small but subtle differences that point to a slightly quicker or more responsive B48 engine. Why are we not seeing a bigger improvement when the Cooper and Cooper S are getting noticeable power upgrades? Or the U25 Countryman which gets even bigger power hikes (especially in the US market)? We don’t have great answers. It could be related to emissions and the reality that, updating this version of the B48 isn’t high on BMW’s priority list. It also leaves room for MINI to eventually tweak software and hardware for a light refresh in a few years. And we know the DCT transmission can handle more torque so there appears to be no component related reason holding MINI back. While this isn’t the JCW, the new F66 Cooper S will be nearly identical2025 MINI Cooper JCW: Size Changes While the F66 JCW is based on the F56 JCW, the dimensions aren’t identical likely due to styling and even a few engineering changes. As you can see above the new car is actually slightly short yet taller. Why the raise in height? This is connected to larger standard tires with an increase circumference. However it’s the width that is the most interesting to us. The F56 Cooper has a width of 75.9″ mm vs the F66 which is wider at 77.6 (both without mirrors). That 1.7″ difference may not sound like much but BMW and MINI don’t typically increase the width of a car solely because of aesthetics. This is due to the wheel and tire size increasing. Tires are now 10 mm wider at 215 and the wheels have been sized up accordingly. Additionally MINI has tweaked the underlying mount points slightly as well. The new F66 MINI Cooper JCW is a mix of the new and familiar2025 MINI Cooper JCW: Wheel Updates The F56 JCW is a great car with an engineering decision that has created an awkward styling issue. The because of the size of the front brakes and the wheel offset, all JCW wheels bow outward creating an unusual convex shape that looks very different than typical concave performance wheels. As you can see in these photos as MINI has clearly changed the geometry of the wheels which seems to have eliminated that issue entirely. MINI will offer the 17” JCW Sprint Spoke as standard (which we see above) and the 18” John Cooper Works Lap Spoke 2-tone as an option (seen on the F67 convertible below). The current F56 Cooper S Exhaust design shows that the “dual exhaust” is nothing more than two small pipes from a single exhaust. 2025 MINI Cooper JCW – Single Pipe Exhaust In another surprising move MINI is moving from a two pipe single exhaust to a larger single pipe exhaust. In the exclusive image below you can see a single exhaust pipe (with a stainless steel sleeve), the transversely mounted exhaust and even the aluminum shield underneath it. Look even closer and you’ll see the production version of the single LED reverse light just above the exhaust tip which (one could imagine) would look somewhat integrated with the cutout of the pipe. Why a single exhaust pipe? Let’s start with the exhaust itself. One thing that most don’t know is that the MINI Cooper S and JCW have had a single muffler system since the R56. The fact that two outlets came out the back has primarily been for aesthetics. In this exclusive zoomed in photo you can see a central exhaust and single pipe that looks to be in nearly final production form. In fact there have been more than a few MINI race cars over the years that have gone with the exhaust single pipe design. Why? When asked they consistently have told us it’s both more power efficient and lighter. So in other words exactly what you want in both race cars and modern performance cars. Why wouldn’t MINI have always had a single exhaust? It comes down to marketing and the very simple concept; two exhaust pipes means more power than one in the eyes of the car buying public. In fact you’ll see this on display later this year when the quad-exhaust JCW Countryman debuts. The F67 MINI Cooper JCW Convertible with the 18” John Cooper Works Lap Spoke wheels2025 MINI Cooper Convertible JCW As before MINI will be offering the JCW model in the iconic three door F66 hatch and the F67 convertible. Once again MINI will not be offering its highest performance model in the five door configuration. Why? Product planners apparently made that call many years ago in the F56 generation and due to tight development budgets due to having to offer both electric and ICE models, they’re sticking to it. The F66 gear selector moves from the console to the dash in the form of a discrete toggle switch.2025 MINI Cooper JCW: One Transmission For those reading MotoringFile this likely won’t be a total surprise as we’ve reported on this several times over the last 9 months. But it’s still a shocking development given the popularity of the option – especially last year when we saw over a 50% take rate in the US. Why would MINI eliminate manuals despite the fact that the F66 is mechanically identical to the F56 and could easily carry over the current Getrag 6 speed? It’s likely about simplifying drivetrains components and cutting costs within manufacturing. And for Europe (where CO2 targets are much more stringent) the manual is slightly dirtier. Replacing the manual is a revised 7 speed dual clutch transmission that promises faster shift times than before and a more responsive manual control via the standard steeling wheel mounted paddles. Along with this will be an entirely new gear lever design that mirrors what we’ve seen on the electric J01 and U25 MINI Countryman. Chassis and Brake Updates This is where the F66 MINI Cooper JCW is a straight evolution from the F56 version. This starts with the braking system which will be carried over. That means we’ll see a 4-piston fixed caliper upfront with internally ventilated, drilled brake disk up front (335x30mm). In the back (where there’s less weight to worry about) MINI will continue with a single piston floating caliper and a disk that’s 259x10mm. All four calipers will be finished in the traditional Chili Red. The chassis and suspension will see subtle improvements with MINI further refining its adaptive suspension design. While we don’t yet have details we’re told this focuses on improving ride quality while not forgoing any performance. F66 JCW Trim2025 MINI Cooper JCW Launch Timing and End of Production Produced in Oxford, the F66 will take over as the F56 ends production in February of 2024. That means we’ll see the first F66 MINI Coopers roll off the line next March as the plant begins its pivots into a new generation of MINIs. We expect the F66 MINI Cooper JCW will go into production beginning in March of 2024.   15. The electric Countryman SE is MINI’s first electric vehicle for the majority of consumers. It combines electrification in the crossover packaging that so many are looking for. More importantly its range is high enough for global mass market appeal. But it’s more than range that matters in an electric car. Charging speed, battery capacity and cold weather performance all are crucial. Let’s take a deep dive into all of it. In the UK that range is listed as 245 to 287 miles depending on how much urban vs highway driving you’re doing. In the US that is estimated to be to be a 245 mile EPA range. With either set of numbers it’s clear that the Countryman SE will be much more viable of a choice than the first generation Cooper SE with it’s 110 mile range (EPA). The battery capacity in the electric MINI Countryman is 66.5 kWh with the usable size being 63.78 kWh. The 400v system allows an AC charging speed of 11kW and DC – 130kW. In ideal scenarios (charging at 130kWx) the electric Countryman SE can get from 5-80% in only 29min. In miles that’s roughly 23 to 184 miles in normal operating temperatures. While we didn’t need to charge our test car (our time was limited to a few hundred miles) that type of charging speed sounds fantastic. However the ability to recharge the Countryman SE quickly will be more dependent on the charging network than the car itself.   16. Today marks the beginning of a new era for MINI as they kick off production for their latest fifth generation (F66) MINI Cooper at the MINI headquarters, Plant Oxford. The last ever petrol powered MINI Cooper, the F66 ushers in a new generation of design and technology on an upgraded platform. And now it’s officially rolling down the assembly line. The team at MINI Plant Oxford, along with Head of MINI, Stefanie Wurst, celebrated this milestone with a special event on-site. Charlie Cooper, grandson of the legendary John Cooper, who inspired the Cooper name, had the honor of driving the first three-door model off the production line. The new MINI Cooper is the latest generation to be manufactured in the UK, with contributions from all three BMW Group UK manufacturing sites. Body pressings and sub-assemblies are made at BMW Group Plant Swindon, while BMW Group Plant Hams Hall in North Warwickshire produces the latest three and four-cylinder petrol engines. Finally, all these parts come together at MINI Plant Oxford for body shell production, painting, and final assembly. Since the launch of the first modern MINI in 2001, over 4.4 million MINIs have been produced in Britain, including 150,000 MINI Electric models built between 2019 and 2023. With its flexibility, competitiveness, and expertise, the MINI Oxford plant plays a crucial role in the BMW Group’s production network. It is gearing up to produce two new all-electric MINI models from 2026. The BMW Group will have invested more than £3 billion in the Swindon, Hams Hall, and Oxford plants by then. The new MINI Cooper, announced last month, joins the MINI Cooper Electric and the new MINI Countryman in the new MINI family.   17. For 2024 MINI is introducing an entirely new product range that will include both electric and petrol powered models. Due to various global regulations, every market is handling this launch differently MINI USA included. To help with all this confusion we’ve worked with MINI USA to detail every single model, its start of production and when we’ll see them at dealers. The U25 Countryman JCW is coming soon to a dealer near you.1st Wave: U25 Countryman S, JCW & F66 Cooper S Starting the product onslaught will be the petrol powered U25 MINI Countryman S, Countryman JCW and the F66 MINI Cooper S. US Spec models will begin production in March of 2024 with a market launch of May. There likely will be exact on-sale date supplied by MINI USA in the first half of May. Each dealer will receive several launch cars that will represent each model with the idea that they’ll be available for test drives and as a way to help potential buyers sort out models and options. The F66 Cooper will join the line-up late this summer 2nd Wave: U25 Countryman SE, F66 MINI Cooper & F65 Cooper S 4 Door The 2nd wave of this changeover will include the first new electric product to hit US shores.   18. The first ever electric MINI Countryman SE delivers the electric driving experience we’ve been waiting for. But how does it compare with its petrol siblings and does it still feel MINI-like? The all electric MINI Countryman SE is a huge moment for the brand. It’s got 313 hp, up to 287 miles of WLTP range and more room than ever. But could MINI finally crack the code and create an electric car that appealed to the masses? We went to Portugal to meet with MINI designers, engineers and (most importantly) get behind the wheel for some answers. MINI Countryman SE Test notes Our test was primarily focused on the area to the west and north west of Lisbon where we could find plenty empty of mountain and coastal roads. The weather was a mixed bag of sun and downpours giving us a great opportunity to get a sense for how MINI has tuned this car at the limit of adhesion. We put around 200 miles on the car in total and our range just under 25% remaining. That was with a very heavy right foot and no regard for saving energy. If those calculations are correct we would have seen something around a 250 miles range plenty of urban and back roads along with at least 30-40 miles of highway. Finally thanks to a GoPro failure we lost a portion of our footage from our review (thanks again GoPro). However that just saved you from watching your author talk while driving.   19. Finally MINI is launching a fully electric car that’s meant for the masses with plenty of range of huge power figures. But how do these figures from the electric Countryman SE translate into the real world and how could a 4,574 lbs car feel like a MINI? We went to Portugal to speak to the people behind the car and get behind the wheel. Stepping into the new electric Countryman SE is a vastly different experience than any MINI before it. The new interior layout does away with the cluster display behind the steering wheel as all relevant content is projected onto circular display and the head-up display (standard in the US). Reduced to the essentials, the new interior has a much different, more relaxing feel to it. The there’s the size. Like the new Countryman JCW we reviewed a couple of weeks ago, the SE is built on a new, larger platform (code named U25) which has allowed the it grow in every dimension. While the increase isn’t has big as it was with the previous generation Countryman over its predecessor, it’s still a noticeable change. That’s evident in the interior immediately. The driver and front passenger have almost three centimeters of additional width at the shoulder. Similarly the rear passengers have 2.5 centimes of extra weight thanks to a wider track and better use of space in general. But the real change is the moment you twist the “key”. The electric MINI Countryman SE registers this action with a subtle hum and visual welcome. From there your hand intuitively moves over to the gear toggle where you pull down for “D” and head out. The Driving Experience of the Electric MINI Countryman SE We had the chance to drive the petrol Countryman JCW and electric Countryman SE back to back and came away with some surprising conclusions. First off do not let the identical power figures fool you. The JCW is tuning (from its brakes to its suspension) to be much more performance oriented. The electric Countryman SE was nearly as quick but never felt as light on its feet or as eager. That’s likely due to two things. The most obvious is the fact the SE weighs 886 lbs more than the JCW. The second is how MINI has tuned the suspension and steering. Not surprisingly MINI has designed and engineered the SE as a daily driver that delivers comfort and performance vs the JCW which flips that script. Yes it’s quick and has plenty of torque – all 364 ft lbs are available almost immediately. The moment you push the car in corners you realize that this is not a JCW. The benefit of that is obvious. This is a fantastic daily driver that never punishes you. Instead it rewards with plenty of performance an and likely the most comfortable MINI never. The SE absorbs road imperfections and drowns the noise associated with them so well it’s almost un-mini-like. The downside hits when you’re hustling it. Going from corner to corner along the Portugal coast give me some impression of weight. But as I got more confident with the grip levels (and away from the cliffs) I could explore the limits further. What I found was a car that felt incredibly competent until you hit 8/10s. That’s when the weight penalty was exposed and the car began to understeering. Not that this is a surprise of course. MINI has done an admirable job hiding the extra 886 lbs over the JCW version but that doesn’t mean its not there. What is here is a quick, compliant Countryman that oozes torque and accelerates effortlessly. The combination makes the Countryman SE likely the best daily driving MINI we’ve ever tested. MINI engineers have focused on being more holistic in the tuning of key components from axles, steering and dampers. This is combined with more sophisticated processors controlling the dynamic control systems and a more direct steering rack ratio of 55 mm of rack travel per turn creates a more fluid and reactive driving experience. The Electric MINI Countryman – A Symphony of Sound The silence is golden. No matter how many electric cars we drive we never get tired of the serenity of an EV. But that silence doesn’t last, Like BMWs, MINI has created its own sound language thats intended to provide feedback and even a touch of excitement during spirited drives. So they told us. But hearing would be believing. Pushing the Countryman SE through the mountains and coastal roads of Portugal was itself a blast. But the sound effects that came with the acceleration was a genuinely fun part of the experience. You definitely need to not take things too seriously to enjoy them. But once you embrace the new world of EV performance the added sound effects that MINI has created really do make sense. They’re also just fun. Imagine a real-life Mario Kart video game and you get the idea. It’s surprisingly engaging and becomes a real part of the driving experience. And yes, we know this sounds insane. But we heard more than one very jaded automotive journalist on the launch giggle when recounting the interior sounds the Countryman SE was producing during spirited driving. However key to all of these sounds is the ability to turn them off. Yes it is possible. Even the “experience jingles” that play when you change the experience mode can be switched off permanently. The New Countryman JCW Is The Biggest MINI Ever The new Countryman is big but according to MINI designers and engineers that’s due to customer feedback. MINI has been losing costumers as families or space needs grow. The solution to this was to carefully grow the Countryman taking the majority of the BMW X1’s chassis and the rear portion of the European BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. There’s more legroom in the front and back along with 25 cu-ft more luggage capacity with the seats up. That grows to over from 47.6 cu-ft to 56 with the seats folded down. This gives the new Countryman class leading space in the subcompact luxury crossover segment. The rear of the new Countryman offers more space than we’ve ever seen in a MINI. But more impressively there’s more options as well. The position of the rear row of seats can be adjusted in length by up to 13 centimeters providing more legroom at the rear or additional volume in the luggage compartment. The backrest of the three rear seats is also individually adjustable in six positions by up to 12 degrees. This means that the seat either offers the option to lean back or positioned upright to allow for more cargo room. In short things are more comfortable and inside – exactly the attributes that people buy crossovers. But this is a MINI and any increase in size is inherently noticeable by previous owners. There’s certainly a change but the overwhelming feeling we had was that this new U25 Countryman has been pushed gently outward creating a more spacious interior without sacrificing too much in the way of smallness – at least in its segment. Additionally the rear seats can be folded down increasing the 16.24 cu/ft boot to 51.20 cu/ft – the most ever in a MINI. An additional floor compartment provides convenient space for the charging accessories in MINI Countryman Electric or storage in the ICE variants. The optionally available trailer hitch (finally coming to the US!) offers a towing capacity up to 2646 LBS or 1,200 kg. The New Tech in the MINI Countryman SE Where do we begin. The center of the tech experience is of course that circular display and MINI OS9. But there’s plenty more. Augmented Reality navigation, Level 2 Autonomous Driving, massaging seats and even a rotating reverse camera. MINI pulling out all stops to make this new generation Countryman a much more modern and thoroughly tech enabled car. And the good news is that all of it actually works. Stationary the new MINI OS9 interface had felt intuitive in our previous experiences. But as we know, on the road things can be a bit different. In our experience we found a relatively short learning curve before we felt fully acclimated with the new system. Within the first hour we had quickly become accustom to the new interaction language and overall placement of functionality. The standout feature however was MINI’s new augmented reality option within the navigation system. The augmented reality view overlays mapping graphics on a live video feed in the top of the circular display helping to literally paint directions on the road in front of you. On the bottom is a top-down map view which is perfectly synced with the video and gives you a full picture of where you are as you get clarity on when and where to turn. It worked flawlessly for us and felt like a game changer for urban environments. Another great addition is the optional L2 autonomous driving functionality. Behind the glossy plastic where there’s a grille on the petrol Countryman are several ultrasonic sensors positioned on the horizontal strut that work in tandem with a suite of 12 sensors in total. Their goal is to detect the MINIs surroundings painting a much more clear picture of obstacles in a wider array of weather conditions. With this system MINI has dramatically improved its active cruise that we’re told will be more weather proof and hehe less faults. It also allows MINI’s new Augmented Reality navigation to be incredibly precise in the complex environments. When engaged, Driving Assistant Professional allows the driver to take their hands off the wheel at speeds of up to 37 mph (60 km/h), as long as they have their eyes on the road (as determined by an eye tracker) and are ready to intervene at any time. Once you reach 38 MPH the system switches modes and goes into a more simplistic autonomous setting which requires a driver’s hands to rest on the wheel. However the system works identically, following traffic, the curves of the road and will even change lanes based on the driver using the turn signal. As you can see in the video above system requires hands-on the wheel or at least pressure of some kind as a safety measure. Finally there are a host of other small additions. The one that seems gimmicky until we tried it was the rotating reversing camera. MINI has never mentioned this in any official release yet the functionality is genuinely impressive and useful. MINI Countryman SE Range & Charging The electric Countryman SE is perhaps MINI’s most viable electric vehicle for the majority of its customers. That’s due two things; it’s size that will appeal to a broader range of customers and its range. In the UK that range is listed as 245 to 287 miles depending on how much urban vs highway driving you’re doing. In the US that is estimated to be to be a 245 mile EPA range. With either set of numbers it’s clear that the Countryman SE will be much more viable of a choice than the first generation Cooper SE with it’s 110 mile range (EPA). The battery capacity in the electric MINI Countryman is 66.5 kWh with the usable size being 63.78 kWh. The 400v system allows an AC charging speed of 11kW and DC – 130kW. In ideal scenarios (charging at 130kWx) the electric Countryman SE can get from 5-80% in only 29min. In miles that’s roughly 23 to 184 miles in normal operating temperatures. While we didn’t need to charge our test car (our time was limited to a few hundred miles) that type of charging speed sounds fantastic. However the ability to recharge the Countryman SE quickly will be more dependent on the charging network than the car itself. In our time with the car we found it to be incredibly competent in every scenario from bumper to bumper urban traffic to motorway travel to Portugal’s best mountain roads. It’s not the fastest nor is it the lightest on its toes. And at over 4,500 lbs it’s about as far away as you can get from the iconic MINI Cooper. But in the growing world of electric crossovers it fills a void with a fun to drive, thoughtfully designed crossover with class leading utility. While the $45,200 base price (US spec) is relatively well equipped in base form, it’s still one of the most expensive MINIs ever offered. But for the money you get a car that is miles beyond what MINI has ever offered. The level of sophistication in the drivetrain to the refinement in the tech goes well beyond what we’ve seen from the brand’s products in the past. For many potential owners the Countryman SE will feel like the ideal MINI daily driver. As always an electric car won’t be for everyone. But with the new Countryman SE, range becomes much less of an issue as it has with the first generation Cooper SE. So the big question for individual buyers comes down to use cases and charging network you might need to support it. If you can make that work and need a little extra space, the electric Countryman SE might be your dream MINI. It’s part of a technology package that powers not only MINI’s autonomy features but everything from its ew augmented reality navigation to pedestrian detection. Behind the gloss plastic are several ultrasonic sensors positioned on the horizontal strut that work in tandem with a suite of 12 sensors in total. Their goal is to detect the MINIs surroundings painting a much more clear picture of obstacles in a wider array of weather conditions. With the Driving Assistant Professional, the MINI Cooper and Countryman has partially automated Level 2 driving on highways for the first time. If you’ve been following MotoringFile all year you’ll remember us exclusively reporting on this feature last spring. The sensor housing is the smallest yet offered by the BMW GroupWhen engaged, Driving Assistant Professional allows the driver to take their hands off the wheel at speeds of up to 37 mph (60 km/h), as long as they have their eyes on the road (as determined by an eye tracker) and are ready to intervene at any time. The small grey strips in the wheel light-up to tell you when the system is working or needs your attention. We’ve used this system in BMW’s extensively and it really does work as advertised – you can take your hands off the wheel entirely as long as your eyes are on the road. The car will stop, go, turn and even change lanes on command using the turn signal. The thin grey strip above “set” is one of the two LED lights that lets you know the system is active Once you reach 38 MPH the system switches modes and goes into a more simplistic autonomous setting which requires a driver’s hands to rest on the wheel. However the system works identically, following traffic, the curves of the road and will even change lanes based on the driver using the turn signal. However at these speeds the system requires hands-on the wheel or at least pressure of some kind. The petrol F66 MINI Cooper has its main array of sensors discretely hidden in the center of the grille.This feature has been optional on BMWs for years and in our experience is ideal for stop and go traffic. However MINI’s system adds a new wrinkle as it can identify gaps in traffic needed to change lanes to get to an exit. It then brings the vehicle to the optimum speed for assisted lane changes. The system will let you know when it’s successfully engaged via two green lights on the steering wheel. The petrol U25 MINI Countryman JCW uses a textured pattern to obscure the sensor module in the center of its grille.When it can’t detect your eyes (in hands-free) or hands (at higher speeds) those green lights being to flash orange. You can see that happen in the second video above as I try to demonstrate that it’s the wheel moving and not my hands. MINI’s Augmented Reality navigation is enabled by the same array of 12 sensors that powers its autonomous driving features While MINI is focused on Level 2, hands-free mode intended mostly for traffic jams below 38 mph, it’s the hands-on mode (which works up to 85 mph) that you’ll likely find much more useful. In this mode the system uses a combination of adaptive cruise and steering input to follow well marked highways without intervention. It uses steering the lane guidance assistant, lane keeping, lane change assistant (with active side collision protection) and the emergency stop assistant to create a seamless and safe experience. We’ve spent 1000s of miles in BMW’s with a similar system and found it to be an excellent feature for anyone who does long stretches highway driving. While it doesn’t take over completely at highway speeds (your hands have to remain on the wheel), it lessens the cognitive load on those long road-trips. MINI’s Driving Assistant Professional is made up of two options: Driving Assistant (5AS) and the Driving Assistant Plus (5AT). MINI and BMW’s Leipzig Plant are continuing their electrification journey with the introduction of the all-electric MINI Countryman, just four months after the launch of the combustion-engine version. For MINI this is a huge moment in its transition to eventually becoming an all electric brand. For the Leipzig Plant it marks another milestone in the transition to electric mobility, following the phase-out of the BMW i3. The MINI Countryman Electric represents a significant step in MINI’s electrification strategy, offering two fully electric variants, the Countryman E and the Countryman SE. Plant Leipzig has undergone continuous upgrades since 2018 to enable higher production volumes thanks to BMW’s €1.6 billion investment. The main driver behind the volume increase is the MINI Countryman, with output set to rise to nearly 500 units per day by 2024. Producing four different cars on a single line requires a lot of planning. Flexible assembly structures are key to this, allowing seamless integration of the MINI Countryman Electric into the already complex production process. The plant now handles all stages of high-voltage battery production, contributing to the BMW Group’s transformation towards e-mobility. Resource-saving painting processes, including overspray-free painting, further emphasize Leipzig’s commitment to sustainability. With the production launch of the MINI Countryman Electric, all three stages of the Gen 5 high-voltage battery production process are now represented at BMW Group Plant Leipzig: cell coating, module production and battery assembly. Operations in all three are currently ramping up, with five cell-coating, three module-production and two high-voltage battery-production lines now in place. Plant Leipzig’s e-component production capacity has been increasing since 2021. It will now manufacture not just the high-voltage batteries for the MINI Countryman Electric but also e-components for the BMW iX1, BMW iX2, BMW i4, BMW i5 and BMW iX made at other sites. The e-component production unit at Leipzig currently employs some 1,000 people. The facility’s long-term vision includes decarbonizing production by replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen. Plans for a regional hydrogen grid are underway, positioning Plant Leipzig as a pioneer in sustainable automotive production. The MINI Countryman E and SE will arrive in the UK and EU later this month. The North American market will exclusively get the SE beginning with July production.   22. Imagine if you had a secret switch that turned every setting in your MINI to the max. That’s exactly what MINI has done with Boost Mode – a special mode offered on the new MINI Countryman JCW. In testing the new MINI Countryman JCW we had a chance to use MINI’s new Boost Mode and what we found was a shortcut to maximum attack. Boost Mode is a bit of a cheat code for MINI drivers. In short it activates of all max performance setting for a total of 10 seconds. In our brief testing we found it to be the ideal weapon for overtaking on back roads or powering out of tight corners. It also can work as a type of launch mode for optimal acceleration. In our experience it found it perfect for putting the car on its toes and prepping it for maximum attack. And it’s a great shortcut. To replicate it you’d have to do the following: Select GoKart Mode with the center toggle and then go to the mode’s secondary menu to pick all of the sportiest individual settings. One thing it doesn’t do is add more power. Unlike similar functionality in other cars, Boost Mode doesn’t activate any additional power or torque.   23. Today MINI is launching the all new MINI Countryman in its home market of the UK and simultaneously releasing the best photos yet of the new crossover. In fact this set of photos is so good we had to pause all other stories we’re working on and just show you how great the new Countryman looks on British B roads. Some quick background. In the UK the Countryman is launching as both internal combustion and fully electric. As with the rest of the world the plugin hybrid is gone from the market and in its place a full electric model range. BMW’s thinking is that this gives a broader choice to the consumer and focuses MINI more on where its headed which of course is full electrified. In the UK the petrol powered 170 hp Countryman C starts at £29,335. This is joined by the 218 hp Countryman S £34,725 and the 300 hp JCW at £41,520. The EV range was simpler. The 204 hp Countryman E (range 277-286) starts at £42,080 and the 313 hp Countryman SE (range 256-262) starts at £49,680.   24. Last fall we wrote about how it appeared MINI’s 3 cylinder engine was soon to be eliminated from the line-up. Since then we’ve seen that same engine launch with the Cooper C and Countryman C in the UK and Europe. However our sources were clear – the 3 cylinder was being eliminated in some markets. We now know where and why. And perhaps more importantly what it could mean for an entire new world of upgrades. Where & Why the B38 3 Cylinder Is Being Eliminated The B38 3 Cylinder engine is being eliminated from the North America. Sources are also telling we’ll see it eliminated countries with similar emissions regulations such as South Korea and a few others that (oddly) seem more aligned with the EU. Why has MINI made this change? It’s unclear but we can guess that it has something to do with the complexity and cost associated with getting so many engines and configurations engineered and approved for different markets. How This Could Completely MINI Cooper Change Performance Upgrades The result are two very different versions of the MINI Cooper C. The UK and EU’s 3 Cylinder version of the Cooper C will get 115kW (154) while the four cylinder US version will see 120kW (161 hp) But the big difference isn’t the extra 7 hp. It’s the fact that under the hood of the US spec MINI Cooper is the same exact B48 engine that powers the 204 hp Cooper S – down to the engine code. That could open up a completely new world of tuning the base MINI Cooper to a much higher power output. And that could be a complete game change in the world of MINI tuning. We’ll be following this closely as the same arrangement will apply to the F65 five door and F67 Convertible Cooper as they are go into production later this year in July and November.   25. The new petrol F66 MINI Cooper is not a simple refresh of its F56 predecessor. It’s an entire rethink of the F56 that just happens to be on the same chassis. But what exactly are those differences and how important are they? We’ve been hands-on with the F66 MINI Cooper several times and have come away some of surprising answers. Looking below you can immediately see some of the small nuances changes that MINI has made. Every dimension has changed and in some surprising ways. The front and rear overhang has been reduced slightly making the entire car shorter. But the width has grown noticeably and the track (both front and back) has gotten wider as well. The F56 Cooper has a width of 75.9″ vs the F66 which is wider at 77.6″. That 1.3″ difference may not sound like much but BMW and MINI don’t typically increase the width of a car solely because of aesthetics. And this isn’t just about wider wheels and tires (which have gone from 205 to 215 on the Cooper S). This change is also due to MINI changing the mechanical bits creating a wider track. This has also has an aesthetic benefit of allowing a more concave wheel design – a critique especially of the previous JCW. Then there are the little things like the boot or trunk. Yes even the boot has been altered – growing in volume slightly. That really underscores just how thorough this redesign was. Looking at the image above you can also clearly see how MINI has pushed forward and changed the angle of the headlights as well. This works in conjunction with the new hood and simpler face of the car to create a more upright silhouette. We’ve previously talked about this in our first hands-on video review of the F66 but have never had a visual that demonstrates it so clearly. In fact the only visible parts of the car that have been carried over are the doors, the roof and the glass. That’s actually not historically true. The R50 (manual) had a DIN weight of 2,535 lbs which then decreased to 2,513 with the R56 Cooper (manual). While that weight finally did go up with the noticeably larger F56, it wasn’t as much as most assumed. The F56’s DIN weight is 2,701 lbs in manual form and 2,756 with the DCT. Given that the F66 will only be available with the DCT, let’s compare those two numbers. The F56 Cooper DCT weights in at 2,756 lbs. The new F66 Cooper DCT has a curb weight of 2,778 lbs, a 22 lbs difference. Given the added emissions and safety additions (and not to mention the new tech), a 22 lbs increase feels like a win in a world of 6,000 SUVs. The Interior of the F66 MINI Cooper While the exterior changes on the F66 may be surprising given its F56 origins, the interior is downright shocking. MINI has turned the F56 into a completely new car with all the design language, materials and technology found in the J01 MINI Cooper. The biggest change is the minimal design and large, circular display that dominates the experience. We’ve details that display, its operating system and its many functions on MotoringFile for months now. In fact you can see our full demo of the new system below. The new display and its software is a focal point for the entire driving experience housing almost all functionality save for a row of switches, buttons and toggles just below it. Stationary the new MINI OS9 interface had felt intuitive in our previous experiences. But as we know, on the road things can be a bit different. In our experience we found a relatively learning curve before we felt fully acclimated with the new system. Within the first hour we had quickly become accustom to the new interaction language and overall placement of functionality. But is this better than MINI’s previous system? In our experience with the same system in the new Countryman, absolutely. The augmented navigation in particular was a standout. it overlays mapping graphics on a live video feed in the top of the circular display helping to literally paint directions on the road in front of you. And the data within the mapping app itself felt almost as reliable and quick as Google Maps or Apple Maps. The F66 MINI CooperThe F56 MINI CooperLeather vs Vescin When talking about there interior, the headline for many is that this new MINI is completely leather free. Why? There’s a big environmental impact due to the production of leather in the quantities that companies like MINI need. So much so that MINI has made the bold decision to eliminate leather from its coming starting with the all new J01 MINI Cooper electric What’s wrong with leather? It’s complicated but suffice to say it’s not the most natural and environmentally safe thing to produce. It’s also not aligned with MINI’s brand image of being environmentally conscious and animal friendly. But how do you replace something as iconic as leather seats? In short you find a more environmentally friendly alternative that’s actually better to touch and lasts longer. BMW and MINI are so confident in products like Vescin (BMW’s version I called Sensafin – an improved version of Sensatec) they they’re already being used in several cars with MSRPs well over $100,000. What’s it like in person? Getting into the new F66 MINI Cooper, it’s clear that Vescin is a step-up from what we’ve known as Leatherette. The off-white perforated seats in the F66 MINI Cooper we experienced were softer to the touch than leatherette and felt much more supple. But how do they compare with leather? In short very well. Compared with the standard Chesterfield or Cross Punch leather seating, Vescin feels softer and more premium. It’s not on par with the feel and softness of MINI’s Lounge Leather but then again that’s $2500 option on the Signature Trim. The Electric J01 MINI Cooper vs the Petrol F66 MINI Cooper To confuse things even more there’s an entirely other new MINI Cooper (the J01) that’s all electric. Why is has MINI created a (relatively) new petrol MINI Cooper when they have an all new electric version? The short answer is that MINI is putting enormous investment in electrifying the product line-up with the J01 MINI Cooper, J05 MINI Aceman and U25 Countryman (available as both ICE and EV). This enormous investment prompted a decision; completely drop the ICE powered Cooper, spend billions creating a new one or thoroughly rework the current F56 adding performance, technology and a new design inside and out. In the end there was only one choice. The F66 is that answer. You can read and watch our comparison of the two here. F66 MINI Cooper Launch Details The F66 MINI Cooper is now in production and should reach UK and EU dealers in late March. The rest of the world should see cars in mid to late April.
